Thread: [FILM] The Hobbit

This movie is just looking better all the time.

And hell, LOTR was a amazing set of movies. Peter Jackson may have had to cut some corners and create a bit of fill, but that would have happened with any director, and I bet not many of them would have been able to produce the same quality that Jackson did.

I'm really looking forward to this.

That's because it will take many, many hours of video to accurately portray the detail and sheer magnitude of detail and trouble that went into building the virtual Middle Earth from the books. I haven't yet read the books, but I started with the Fellowship a few years back and it was too high English for my young mind to understand. I've been wanting to get back into them ever since though, but time... :/

Agreed. In most cases, the movies aren't as detailed as the books (Quite obviously), but I think it's even more so in the Lord of the Rings. Tolkien created an amazing in universe with his books, I can't even imagine how long or how many movies they would need to make to cover all the fine details. Although, let it be known that I would watch every one of them. :D

Toxxyc, I think you may have just motivated me to go read the books again.

Reading those books requires such concentration, otherwise by the end of the page you've forgotten what happened at the beginning of the page X_X

As long as The Hobbit movie doesn't turn out to be one of those over-hyped disappointments, I'd be very amped to see it :D

I'd hazard a guess then that you've never even tried to read them, as this description doesn't apply to LOTR at all.

I've tried, but trying when you're tired clearly doesn't work too well...

To be fair, the books are written in such a way that you do have to concentrate to catch the finer details.
They might not be written in such high English that you forget what was at the top of the page, but they are definitely not the easiest books to read.

It doesn't make them any less enjoyable though.

So I have read the LOTR books but only after I watched the first movie. In other words, I watch Fellowship, read all the books then watched the other 2. I'm thinking of picking up The Hobbit but should I wait for the movie first? The trailer did not grab me as much (except for the last 10 seconds!!) because it looks more like a comedy than an adventure. Any advice?

I say go for the book first, it would probably give you a better understanding of the movie. I always think it's better to know the original version, and then you can see what's been changed/left the same in the movie, not the other way round.

Really you guys are all neanderthals. I read the LOTR when I was 12, nothing difficult about it:)

I found my concentration kept straying while reading the books. I'd 'read', but not really 'listen' to what I'm reading, so that I'll suddenly realize I've read three pages without knowing what happened in the last three pages. I blame it on Tolkien's long-winded descriptions, though.

The only reason I finished The Hobbit was because I managed to get my hands on a graphic novel which cut out all the descriptive parts.

My annual LOTR movies all-nighter should happen soon. Can't wait until the day I can add The Hobbit to the list, although I suspect the four movies will take much longer than a single night.

Just to get the ball rolling seeing as no-one has mentioned this yet, check out the early impressions from the 10 minutes screening.

Dim reaction to high-def look of Peter Jackson's 'The Hobbit'/

Based on the deflated reaction to 10 minutes of footage shown today from The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, Peter Jackson’s state-of-the-art high-definition epic may or may not forever change the way we view movies, but it will definitely revolutionize the way we talk about that strange, hard-to-describe fluorescent look HD video can sometimes have.
There are two ways to look at the clips featured at the annual gathering of theater owners: As storytelling, the first half of Jackson’s two-part adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit is perfectly in sync with the tone and quality of his groundbreaking The Lord of the Rings trilogy.
But as a platform for new cinematic technology, the clips received an underwhelming reaction at best
According to the article and others I have read it sounds like this new 48fps thing could be something to get used to. Movies has traditionally always ran at 24fps and this could be a huge gamble for Jackson and co. The rest of the movie sounds good though. (Times like these that I wish onona still posted, just to give us some more insight.)

And a little added extra (via Gandalf's twitter):

    Pretty :)

Probably something I shouldn't say but yeah: I started reading The Hobbit yesterday. Just the first few pages, the rest is for the coming week when I'm at the beach and it's too cold to do anything! :D

So far, every movement, every anything, is absolutely awesome. I can see in my minds eye every movement of Baggins', Took and Gandalf. The names of the dwarves are instantly recognizable (Balin, Gloin, among others) as mentioned in the Lord of the Rings movies, and I love it. Bag End, Underhill, Gandalf, etc. etc. all pop to mind and instantly I see them as portrayed in the movies I watched like 20 times already. Lovely, lovely book. Can't wait to completely chew into it! :D

And it's actually a better book the trilogy. Also in the mood now to reread it.

The Hobbit now to be made into 3 movies!

It is only at the end of a shoot that you finally get the chance to sit down and have a look at the film you have made. Recently Fran, Phil and I did just this when we watched for the first time an early cut of the first movie – and a large chunk of the second. We were really pleased with the way the story was coming together, in particular, the strength of the characters and the cast who have brought them to life. All of which gave rise to a simple question: do we take this chance to tell more of the tale? And the answer from our perspective as the filmmakers, and as fans, was an unreserved ‘yes.’

We know how much of the story of Bilbo Baggins, the Wizard Gandalf, the Dwarves of Erebor, the rise of the Necromancer, and the Battle of Dol Guldur will remain untold if we do not take this chance. The richness of the story of The Hobbit, as well as some of the related material in the appendices of The Lord of the Rings, allows us to tell the full story of the adventures of Bilbo Baggins and the part he played in the sometimes dangerous, but at all times exciting, history of Middle-earth.

So, without further ado and on behalf of New Line Cinema, Warner Bros. Pictures, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Wingnut Films, and the entire cast and crew of “The Hobbit” films, I’d like to announce that two films will become three.

It has been an unexpected journey indeed, and in the words of Professor Tolkien himself, ”a tale that grew in the telling.”

    Cheers,

    Peter J.

NOOOOOO!!! Having just read the book, the story still sticks in my head vividly! I'd want to see everything now. All together. Now. Together. Now... :(

On the other hand, if they can expand on The Necromancer and spend more time on the movies, we may see more of the awesome world Tolkien has created in his books. If they can portray that visually I won't mind if they make The Hobbit into 10 movies TBH.
