Default AMD teams up with Valve, Catalyst drivers coming to Steam

Graphics card updates now integrated with Steam

AMD and Valve have partnered to bring graphics card driver updates to the world's largest digital distribution platform.

"In five short years, Valve has evolved the Steam platform to become the preeminent destination for easy and fast access to the latest games and online multiplayer play, offering new features to gamers and to developers, taking PC gaming to new heights - and new audiences. This evolution of PC gaming means exciting times for PC gamers, and today's announcement is another step in that evolution."

An update has already been added which brings this new functionality to Steam, starting with Catalyst Driver 10.9. You can grab it now by checking for Steam updates in your Steam menu. Once you have updated Steam, there will be a new option which reads "Update AMD video drivers" in your Steam menu. Clicking this will cause Steam to automatically begin downloading the latest Catalyst driver.

That's awesome news, since i'm permanently connected to steam. Hopefully the installation procedure is decent though, since crappy video driver installs can cause major issues.

On a slightly relevant topic, I find it rather stupid that a program as widely used as steam is so buggy. It often locks up on me, and though it almost always recovers by itself, it's still annoying as hell.

I really have no issues with Steam. My only issues with Steam are not because of Steam itself but because of Mweb blocking/shaping the ports it needs to authenticate. You may want to try and reinstall Steam and see if that sorts out the problem. (Just remember to do the backups!)

Log onto your mweb account, go to the adsl section and switch off protected access.

Protected access has always been off.

Well this is cool, but I'll download it manually anyway since I'm one of those people who likes to keep the installers for the latest drivers... Well, that's assuming Steam doesn't give me the option of keeping the setup files.

I'd have to say that's my biggest beef with Steam and any automatic update programs like it. I like to keep the patches and updates seperately, in case I need them later, and with these automatic updaters one often can't get hold of the setup files for them.

My steam updated tonight and it seems that it's already incorporated, but I'm happy with my 10.5 drivers

I also have issues with steam locking up randomly, but i think it's more because it's a bandwidth hog and likes to check everything online before it lets you use it :/ (well that's my theory)

But I am starting to like it since I have the internet to use it, just don't like how it takes for ever to launch a game because I have slow internet

My gripe with this is that AMD have to do more through testing with their drivers before releasing it to the public, lest they mistakenly put out one that manages to overheat some of their cards, or something to that effect. Also, Nvidia needs to get its head out of its ass and get going on providing services like these. AMD is going all-out to win market share, and the numbers are showing more and more inclination to AMD and ATI products.
