Thread: The DOTA 2 Thread

Who else is checking out the live streaming? I just checked a few minutes, and even though their server is hellishly overloaded, it's absolutely amazing. I now really can't wait for this game to release. I simply don't know what else to say, just go check it out at www.dota2.com.

Oh, and select SD quality. HD quality EATS bandwidth and is really really slow streaming.

    Also on the BETA list.

Also, it's humorous to see that it's now HoN vs LoL vs Dota 2. LoL players saying it looks like HoN, and therefor sucks, while HoN players say it looks like LoL, and therefor it sucks.

Also, am I the only guy who finds it a tad uncomfortable that this genre is still using the Unreal Tournament multi-kill announcer? Especially now that most players of this genre now believe that that voice originated from Dota?

I think I will be switching it up between LoL and Dota2 once it's out (as similar as these two games are, there's actually a lot different under the hood). Having watched a couple of the Dota2 matches, it still seems that range >>> melee, which is a bit disappointing. Dota2 is almost literally a one for one copy of DotA, with all its quirks and balance issues.

They are the people who never played Unreal Tournament. Let them bask in their ignorance. I know I love the sounds (it's a huge part of DotA, but I have no idea how the guys from UT managed to not sue Valve for the sounds yet, unless they got permission to use it?).

If you think range > melee in all cases, you haven't really played enough DotA yet. With regards with the one-for-one copy, you're absolutely correct. It was their aim to keep the same mechanics, physics, gameplay and everything that was DotA in Dota 2. And that's what we DotA supporters want - DotA, but with a more graphically pleasing skin (the High-Res mod was fun, but it got old as well).

Everyone says this to me. Clearly I've been out of the game for too long and no one recognizes me anymore, but before I quit dota 4 years ago, it was basically all I did (and no, I am not one of those people who played a lot and still sucked). Heck, I was even an admin on Twilight (although there were some royal dicks as admins, none of the admins were crap players) :/

I'll go look up replays on youtube and see what the current scene is like, but from what I have watched in the recent past, it's still mostly ranged heros picked by the top teams.

Gimme a game with Slark and I'll show you what a melee hero can do...

I actually decided to head over to the PlayDota Match forum and took a look. I must admit that Ice has done a lot to level things out since I last played and most competitive teams usually have at least 2 melee heros, and it's quite a variety. Long gone are the days when it was pretty much the melee casters that were the only picks, or Spec who used to be the hard carry of choice.

If only Dota wasn't on such an old engine... oh wait :D

I managed to watch some of the live stream today as well as some replays off Youtube and I must say the game is looking great. It does look like a slower, less frantic HoN, that's true, but it's definitely something I could see myself playing and enjoying. It seems so familiar, even with the different item pictures, units, structures and so on.

Pretty amped for the beta, now.

What was your name online? I joined in 2008, so maybe I missed you, but I know all of the old admins from back then.

And yes, ranged heroes are still preferred and while melee heroes are strong nonetheless, and commonplace, it's not entirely unusual to see CM strats where all five heroes are ranged. Still, melee heroes offer their own benefits and for example Anti-Mage and Clockwerk Goblin are constantly banned because they're both really strong picks in the current version of the map. Rogue Knight (Sven), Earthshaker and Sand King are also very commonly picked heroes, all AOE stunners at that, with the former very much also a carry hero.

A lot of the older stronger carries were nerfed almost out of existence in most scenarios. Heroes like Alchemist and Spectre aren't nearly as powerful as they used to be, while for example Naix is a strong pick but his items are predictable to he can be countered well, now.

Congratulations to Na`Vi for their first place victory, winning 1 million dollars! EHOME came in second place with a solid performance, winning $250,000.

Thanks to all the teams that participated in this event and to all the fans supporting them. We will do The International tournament again in 2012!
DOTA 2 is now a premier E-Sport, looks like tournaments gonna be held annually and there's lot of people that gonna want to be in that tourney.

Just need to do something about the ricing for buybacks...

I watched a highlights reel on YouTube the other day, and I can honestly say that those guys are good, but they're not unbeatable. I found flaws in their gameplay that I can personally fix. That, or they simply were too scared to risk something for $1 million.

Remember not to over strategize, or you might get caught up in the freeze.

    LAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN! **** YEAH!

Holy **** was I ever worried about that. It was actually a meak-or-break feature for me. I will now be buying this.

Oh and as for the discussion about melee heroes - Juggernaut thanks. My blade can cut through armor! And still slice tomato. Seriously, melee heroes might be in a bad position when it comes to laning and farming because it's so easy to harass with a ranged hero, but get past the initial stage and you'll be getting kills soon enough. I love me some omnislash.
