Thread: SEGA's Binary Domain

    Default SEGA's Binary Domain

Saw a trailer this morning on The Verge or whatever its called now.
Could possibly be pretty good. Hope it does beter than Alpha Protocol did.

SEGA has officially announced Yakuza series creator Toshihiro Nagoshi's next project, Binary Domain, a new squad-based shooter set in the year 2080. Tokyo has been invaded by robots and it's up to you and your squad of peace-keepers to stop them!

"What I wanted to create this time was a dramatic and energetic sci-fi shooter. When you hear sci-fi you may think of cold, clinical environments but with Binary Domain I wanted to combine this with a deep human drama, Toshihiro Nagoshi said in a statement.

"The keyword we have in mind for this project is 'Life'. I wanted to make something that will be accepted by both the Japanese and Western markets, and this fundamental theme is something everyone knows but which the full extent of can be difficult to grasp."

SEGA says one of Binary Domain's highlights is its strong, innovative enemy AI, which will make the battlefield a more "compelling experience than ever before."

"We are excited and proud to have Toshihiro Nagoshi working on Binary Domain," said Gary Knight, Senior Vice President of Marketing at SEGA of Europe and SEGA of America.

"The game is being developed in Japan yet it is designed for a global audience and will take players into an exhilarating story wrapped into a unique, action-packed shooter experience in a fresh new setting."

Binary Domain is set for release on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

I won't lie, when I saw this game I thought we could just file it under "generic crap third person shooter of 2012" or The Spiritual Successor to Dark Void/Fracture, etc. Then I watch a pretty lengthy story trailer for the game and the story actually grabbed me. It looks very Blade Runner-ish, not so much that it has a Cyber Punk Neo Noir presentation but more the concept behind the story of machines that are virtually indistinguishable from humans.

If I can afford it at some point, I'd like to check it out. I mean, the average score is in the 70's and that's enough for me to try.

This is not the type of game I play at all, but my husband was playing it two weekends ago- we stopped everything and watched it like a movie. From start to finish
It reminded me of Half Life 2 in the way it is very very cinematic and atmospheric. The voice commands were hilarious because the voice recognition does not understand a South African accent at all. This caused some really funny situations :D

It is not your typical shooter- it is very story driven and indeed reminiscent of Blade Runner or even Total Recall. The characters of your squad mates are well developed and they feel like people not just a nuisance that blocks the doorway and gets killed at inappropriate times.

It also doesn't hurt at all that the game is really beautiful with some of the best integrated cut scenes I have ever seen.
I was really surprised that it didn't make more of a splash when it came out and can only blame timing and Mass Effect 3
By all means give it a try if you feel like something different.

Oddly enough I read two really glowing reviews of the game today, and it's very much on my radar now. Gameplay described as silky smooth, the cutscenes lauded as some of the best gaming cutscenes in a long time, and the graphics praised for being colourful and refreshing.

Comparisons with Vanquish are what sold me.

Well you guys have certainly piqued my interest. Tell me Morrigan, were you and hubby using Kinect? I had no idea about any voice command features in the game. I've found Kinect works quite well at understand my voice but I don't speak with much of an accent and accents in our country are a plenty. :p

Haha no, we were playing on our pc's we don't have Kinect. The voice commands were really funny because ja, South-African accents :D Hubby would be screaming help! the squad would hear- hold. At one point they all thought he was saying I love you. Unfortunately I can't recall what he was actually saying. :P

It didn't hamper the game as much as you might think, though mostly he could get by on saying yes to everything- just make sure to say it as "yeah" It was really nice comic relief in an otherwise emotionally heavy game. You might have better luck with the voice commands and the list is quite extensive ;)

Give it a go by all means it's a blast

    * this was single player- I have no idea what the muti-player is like
