Thread: University

  1. #1

    Default University

Seeing as there are a lot of matriculants on the forum and many of us will probably be going to some university in the next month and a half, I thought that maybe a thread about general varsity life could be useful/interesting.

So lets see who's going where and studying what.

I'm staying in res at Tuks and studying a Bcom Business Management. I'm still not sure if a Bcom is the route I want to go but I'll change if I don't like or find something far more interesting.

For those who have stayed in res sometime over the past few years, would you say that you enjoyed the experience and was it worth it beyond the convenience of being very close to the campus?

Well, I'm going to Wits... YAY!!
For Electrical engineering, which is apparently extremely difficult... BOO!

I live quite near the university so I'm not taking Res.

Work hard man! Do a little bit everyday and it won't be so bad.

    Oh and good luck!

Do as Engineering students do: Work hard, party harder when the time comes ;)

Nice! What res are you in?

I go to Tuks too, although I didn't go to res. From what I've heard from the people who did go to res is that it is entirely worth it. Most wouldn't change it for anything.

Oh and next year, I'll be doing my 3rd year in Civil Engineering at Tuks :)

Starting 2nd year UCT. Doing a BSc in Computer Science (taking Game Design \O/ ) and Psychology.

You are going to have a lot more freedom now, be careful not to abuse it and fall behind. Ie: No one is going to check up on you now, no one is going to be "Have you done your homework?" "Where were you yesterday". Its all your own responsibility.

Remember to be as open minded as possible, don't be scared to approach strangers or talk to older students, its part of the whole thing to explore new areas and try new things. You are going to have sooooooooooooo much fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuun :D

I'm doing the same thing as you at UCT...except I'll be doing first year. Since I'm from Joburg I'll have to stay ay res, and I'm a bit apprehensive about it because I'm not really sure what to expect. Can you tell me what the "first meeting of classes" is, because there's a very good chance I might have to miss it and I'm hoping it's not something that will have a massive impact on my year if I do.

I'll see you there man! Will you be doing the programming bridging course?

Most probably Stellenbosch, still waiting for a reply from UCT. I've been accepted for Mathematical Sciences, focus Comp Sci, but if my marks are good enough I might do engineering instead. Are the requirements lower if you do a 5-year instead of four?

I honestly can't wait for the holidays to be over (never thought I'd be saying that).

I'm going into third year mechanical engineering at Wits. Failure rate was something epic this last year.

O-week at wits: go to the day they specify for your school to be shown around, you will be lost otherwise. Then go to the parties, if not all of them, just the ones that sound like your scene, not everyone can be into the Hip-Hop night or whatever, but if you don't attend at least one before first year kicks off, you will be sadface.

In terms of difficulty, if you've ever played Bayonetta on infinite climax...
Just hit the ground running, if you got in, it's because they think you can pass.

Best of luck to everyone furthering their education in 2011, if you're coming to Wits, remember, you can get a scholarship for playing DotA, just putting that out there.

Yeah, see you soon. :P I'm not certain whether they are still offering the 5 year course from 2010 onwards. Since I can program I won't be attending the bridging course.

I've got a booklet thingy that says they won't be offering the 5 year course from 2010 onwards.

Anyway, are you going to live privately?

Crap... Doubt I'll get in for the four year too. Oh well...

Even though I can't program, I won't be doing the course either. Don't really think it's necessary, seeing as you'll learn to program anyway.

Are you asking if I'm staying in rez? If you are, no. Will be driving every morning... Are you?

Cant program at all? Not even game maker? Do the bridging course. Yes the subject IS "Introduction to programming" but the introduction part is about 2 weeks before you get into the serious stuff. From my friends experiences if you can program, the year is pretty much a waste of time (i only went to class once or twice a term) otherwise if you've never seen code before you're gonna struggle. Most people walked out at the end with about 50-60%, and some averages for tests were in the vicinity of 30%. The first semester is the same as the 3 years of learning to program in highschool. Also, the projects are a bitch

Im going into second year BSc at Stellenbosch: Operations Research, but also taking computer science. Im not entirely sure in my major yet

PSO's for me as well. I have to...:)...walk. Every. Day.
