This does not sound right at all, for more information best to ask the UCT engineering folks.

Also, heavy current is high power transmission, electrical transmission grids and probably some infrastructure on mines and in factories also. Light current is pretty much everything else.

I was wondering if anyone lives at the UCT res. I'd like to know if you're allowed to bring a desktop, or would a laptop be better?

Depends where home is NecroWolf, if you live near Cape Town then a desktop could work.

However if you live in JHB then flying up and having a desktop would be a bit schlep since you need to find a place to store your PC.

I'm in res at UCT and either would be fine. I bought a laptop thinking I'd take it to campus a lot more but it mostly just sits in my res room.

I'm from Johannesburg, so I'll be flying home occasionally. Do you mean storing it in Jo'burg or storing it on the plane?

Eh, depends on your luggage. You can only take 20Kg of luggage on each flight.

As long as that's the only issue I'm going to get a desktop then. I was just worried about being allowed to have one at res.

One interesting thing I saw was that Kulula, 1time and Mango all charge R639 for flights between Jo'burg and Cape Town.

I know this is a bit of necro, but this is important.

Today. I received acceptance from UCT for a Business Science Management Studies degree. Originally, I was going to Tuks to for a Bcom Business Management but now that this has come up, I'm seriously considering taking the Business Science degree. Does anybody know if the Business Science degree is internationally recognised and how much better it is than a BCom?

I on the East Rand (its near JHB for those of you who don't know) so obviously Tuks is better from a distance point of view but arranging accommodation in Cape Town shouldn't be a problem.

It is substantially superior to a bcom, being a bsc and all, but that is about all I know.

UCT is probably the best university, and has many international students. I'm sure that all of its qualifications must be internationally recognized.

Lol, is it just me or does anyone else think these matric results have been slightly fudged? Everyone I've spoken to seems to have done amazingly well. People who I knew were barely passing in grade 11 are getting A's for physics and maths, subjects which a lot of the more "talented" students even had to work hard at. For eg: my friends dad is the vice principal at Rondebosch Boys and he said that they went up from 0 A's in physics the previous year to 48 this year.

My main suspicion is all the drama they had this year, with strikes and protests etc. All the analysts were worried about a major drop in marks and mass failures, instead the marks went up significantly.

Good for you! Now you can further your environmental worrying.

Yeah, the marks were changed. In the upper spectrum however, it didn't change much. For instance, all of my friends who usually got around 75-80 got their A's for Maths in matric, while those who usually got around 65-74 didn't get A's, so IMO the Maths part went fine.

As for Science, which I wrote: The first thing I thought after stepping out of the exam room was: "That paper was under standard", because it was. The real reason for the 0 - 48 thing is the previous year the markers applied strange methods when marking. For instance, in an answer with a unit like m.s^-1 the '.' had to appear in the middle between m and s, otherwise, you'd lose a mark. Ridiculous stuff like that were enforced the previous year, that's why so few pupils got A's for Science in 2009. As for Accounting, I'd say it was definitely on standard. Those that usually got 80-85 in school all missed their A's. Afrikaans marks were adjusted heavily as well.

Decided to take a gap year, before I start studying.

Had a bit of a change of heart, so I decided to take a break in order to gather myself up.

Will be doing some extra lessons for maths once a week just so that I don't forget any of my matric work which would be a complete tragedy considering I will be studying Engineering next year.

Seeing as guys have probably made some last minute changes like Sir PaniCore, lets hear where everybody has actually ended up.

I was originally going to do a BCom: Business Management at Tuks but now I actually ended up doing a Bus.Sci: Finance and Accounting at UCT.

I was originally heading towards Engineering at Stellenbosch and eventually ended up at Engineering in Stellenbosch. :)
