Thread: Egypt Leaves the Internet.

    Default Egypt Leaves the Internet.

    http://www.renesys.com/blog/2011/01/...internet.shtml

Confirming what a few have reported this evening: in an action unprecedented in Internet history, the Egyptian government appears to have ordered service providers to shut down all international connections to the Internet.

Since all the raging students organized themselves via Facebook and Twitter...
Hmmm. In a way it sounds to be a clever plan from the gov.
Too bad that its already too late and Egypt Will Fall !
I heard that Tourists in those tourists buses met some of the raging students, who were waving at them with joy and happiness (Cant find the picture now). Then the peeps ran around burning stuff.
Let them just **** up their own country, and let everyone see how crap it is to survive in Anarchy.

I don’t have any int bandwidth right now, so I can’t confirm, but wtf.

I really can’t believe that to be honest. A complete and utter net ban would cripple business there.

I can't believe this is the first I hear of how bad it's going up there. You'd think most people will know about it.

    Lurk moar. Internet revolutions, lulz.

Anyways, Mubarak has overstayed his welcome by a few decades already.

Have you guys been watching the news, specifically Aljazeera? Egypt is in ****ing turmoil right now with the count of 150 protestants dead and 3200 people arrested (as of last night's news). The building which housed the political party in controversy has been burned to the ground. The protestants have looted museums, taking away Egyptian artifacts (for safekeeping?) and tons of looting going on similar to the happenings after the Katrina incident.

The military have intervened, but only to protect the protestants (as people have been getting killed/seriously injured) and in true peacekeeping fashion, line themselves up between the protestants and riot squads/police.

I can't believe people at work here have not even ****ing heard of what's been going on over the last week.

    Those damn protestants :P

We all feel pretty bad for our former art director, who, as some of you may know, left NAG to take a big fancy job in Egypt almost two months ago. Yeah...

    ROFL, he's ****ed.

I’ve been to Egypt and after watching the bloated corpse of a horse float down the Nile, I can safely say it’s a massive **** hole.

Yeah, everything went balls-up there. Apparently, protests are spreading through to Saudi Arabia, Syria and even Lybia are bracing themselves for the spreading ****storm.

Who do you think instigated it? ;)

And on note related to the thread's title: US plans internet "Kill Switch" amid Middle East turmoil.

In what has to be the ultimate irony or simply bad timing, the United States is in the midst of revisiting the creation of an internet kill switch to defend against cyber warfare just as Egypt on Friday moved to block internet access to stem free speech.

The legislation, which is being led by US Republican senator Susan Collins is ostensibly designed to create presidential powers to shut off the internet to protect against significant cybercrime threats to national security.

It's really strange that things are going so bad, yet most people I encounter are totally oblivious to it. It begs the question, why isn't the South African media covering this better?

I'm personally ignorant of it, mostly because I don't actively expose myself to news outlets. (I used to, but it just made me depressed).

Could be any number of reasons it's not being covered locally - quite possibly due to political reasons. Maybe they worry that it may inspire some people here to do the same, considering how strike/riot-happy we are.

News coverage is very selective. It only covers events that fit the viewer's mental profile of the world. For example, a year or two ago, there was a case of a white american who suicide bombed a stadium, while people were queuing. Got absolutely no media coverage, because it contradicted the "profile" that terrorists were middle eastern.

It's been all over the BBC (and other international news sites) all weekend. Perhaps people should consider reading those instead. Lolnews24.

Been following it on and off, mostly just watched some coverage on CNN last night and it feels like this could have a huge impact on the whole Middle-East political environment. As I understand this, the Egypt riots came after a successful revolution(?) in Tunisia which like Nferno said could spread to the rest of the region.

This could be huge in retrospect.

Yeah, that and Al Jazeera. CNN is also covering the story, but unfortunately they tend to lean on the sensationalist sides of the stories (Secret protestant conspiracy rendezvous, really?).
