Re: The Movie Thread
I kinda neglect the lifestyle forum. I'll post here, then forget to check back again. I made a novel recommendation thread in January, which I only remembered about somewhere in March.

Re: The Movie Thread
I honestly wish hollywood would stop using the Wilhelm scream. It is absolutely horrendous to be engrossed in a really great film, just to hear the Wilhelm scream. It was a mildly amusing in-joke ages ago, but it lost its humour just as long ago. It's time to move on.

I was thinking the same thing the other day. It completely breaks immersion.
This is one of the reasons I never watch making-ofs or behind-the-scenes features. I'm scared it will ruin the "magic" for me.

Word of advice: Don't watch the trailer above if you'd prefer to see the movie over two hours instead of summarised in two minutes.

Agree with Grim. I'll watch it anyway, but the trailer does spoil a ****load.

Re: The Movie Thread
@echo I'm not quite sure how I feel about this one. Part of me feels like Riddick is a stronger character when circumstances are similar to the original movie, but part of me also enjoyed getting to know the expanded lore of the universe in Chronicles. I'm inclined toward thinking that the new movie is better off for going back to the structure of Pitch Black, but I hope they don't lose sight of the lore either. I'm assuming the plot unfolds after the events of Chronicles, as last I recall Karl Urban was reprising the role of Vaako, but it's hard to be sure from the trailer.

Re: The Movie Thread
I'm not even sure how this one works though. If Karl Urban does reprise his role like reported (and I hope he does, he is one of my man crushes) it means that Riddick should still be in charge of the whole nercromonger empire. But I also heard that this is a prequel to Pitch Black, or comes in between Pitch Black and Chronicles, so I'm not sure :/
I think I still prefer Pitch Black to Chronicles because I'm a monster guy, but I hear you on the lore part. It's also one of the reasons I loved Butcher Bay that much. Either way my general rule when it comes to Vin Diesel is to lower my expectations a lot. Guess that's also one of the reasons that I thought Babylon AD wasn't a complete train smash.

Re: The Movie Thread
Exactly. Pitch worked as a vehicle for not only Riddick's combat prowess, but for his dialogue too. I just felt that, as epic as some of the set pieces were in Chronicles, every time he opened his mouth, the wisecracks felt at odds with the more serious tone of the narrative.

I'm a complete riddick fanboy, and yes, I actually loved Chronicles.
I know a lot of people didn't, but I was too enamored by the awesomeness that is the riddick universe, really looking forward to this as it seems kinda like a good mix between Pitch Black and certain elements of Chronicles which I loved.

Re: The Movie Thread
Urban is back, that much is confirmed. The impression I got from the trailer is that Riddick is getting dumped on the planet (again) and it might be related to him assuming the throne, ie. there's a bunch of higher-ups in the necromonger upper-echelons that don't like the idea and conspired to have him end up there. That's IF this plays out after Chronicles.
To be honest I always wondered how they'd take the story forward after Chronicles and I was actually looking forward to Riddick as God Emperor of the most powerful force in the universe but... well.

Re: The Movie Thread
The trailer looks pretty cool, and it left me with some pondering to do as how the movie will bring the shown elements in the trailer together. It just bothers me when I see a professional wrestler in a film. Not a good sign usually, unless they're silent grunts or die off quickly.

No, I've always liked Batista, so I don't really mind all that much.

I also like the dude, but as a wrestler. I like Steve Austin, John Cena and The Rock too, but I'm not so fond of their movies. :P
I've only seen Batista in The Man with the Iron Firsts, and he didn't really do much there.
At least he isn't the leading character, so it might not be so bad.

Re: The Movie Thread
Jesus, I posted about this probably a year ago :p At the time, I read in an interview with Diesel that it takes place after Chronicles, with him being dumped on a planet and hunted by a new bunch/breed of mercenaries. Not much else was said then (except confirming Urban was in it) as shooting had yet to start. There were a whole host of issues behind the scenes with this, with several studios picking it up, only to later drop it. If I remember correctly, Diesel put up a large portion of the budget himself. I will see if I can find the article again, but I only know this because, like Boggle, I am a complete fanboy when it comes to Riddick, and it's universe which is just begging to be explored in greater detail. Remember, Diesel is actually a huge nerd, Riddick is based off a D&D rogue that he used to play. This might be why I find Riddick to be one of Diesels more natural feeling characters, he just knows the character that well. I might even go so far as to say, with the right budget and production crew behind them, they could easily create a franchise to rival Star Wars.

Re: The Movie Thread
James Gunn, the guy directing Guardians of the Galaxy, says Batista is one of the best actors out there, because he's "so in touch with his emotions" (paraphrasing).
Unrelated, but I saw In The Mouth of Madness last night. Hands down, best Lovecraft-inspired movie out there, or at least if you don't count The Thing, which is incidentally also by John Carpenter (in fact, they're part of his Apocalypse trilogy, the other movie being The Prince of Darkness).
Sam Neill is, as usual, excellent. He seems to have an attraction for these cult horrors, except I feel this was a better fit for him than Event Horizon, which I found underwhelming. The plot is excellently written, paying homage to Lovecraft's work, whilst also sort of using it as a plot device. There's also some seriously creepy scenes to rival anything in your typical J-horror or even The Exorcist.
Favourite scene: " Did you know that my favourite colour is blue?" Closely followed by one crazy mind**** of an ending.
10/10 would **** pants and lose sleep in foetal position clawing at the nature of reality again.

The only reason I watched it was because it has Nicholas Hoult in in. I am somewhat ashamed of admitting that.
