    Default Goodbye Bafana?

    From News24

Johannesburg - Bafana Bafana's famous moniker will soon be phased out and SAFA is expected to call on South Africans to choose a new nickname for the national squad, reports the Sowetan.

The process of getting rid of the nickname, which was coined by the Sowetan sports department and has since become an international brand, has received massive support from the government.

This comes after Sports and Recreation Minister Fikile Mbalula said on Wednesday that the department supports the idea of giving the team a new and vibrant sobriquet.

Sowetan has learnt that the task team appointed by SAFA's national executive committee has a suggestion.

The committee, led by SAFA president Kirsten Nematandani, his deputy Danny Jordaan and executive member Alpha Mchunu, will present their recommendations for a new nickname at a meeting in Johannesburg on Friday.

The management committee, which includes Irvin Khoza, Mandla "Shoes" Mazibuko and Chief Mwelo Nonkonyana, will meet today to prepare for Friday's meeting.

Mbalula said: "It's a debate that must come to finality. We need lions that will roar. I'm not saying we must call the team The Lions. We don't need elephants. If you are a Bafana Bafana, you can just be a boy next door who must bring water. Bafana Bafana was a very nice nickname when it was conceptualised."
    What? This is beyond retarded.

So they are gonna ask a guy who's nickname is shoes to help with a new nickname?

lol @ the 'shoes'. Unfortunately they don't really have a choice, the name was copyrighted by some company way back when it was first coined, and as a result SAFA would have to pay them royalties for everything with the logo "bafana bafana".

Safa has seemingly grown tired of the long-running battle with Stanton Woodrush, a company that co-owns rights to produce and sell clothing branded with the Bafana Bafana logo together with the association.

The Supreme Court of Appeal reportedly ruled that Stanton Woodrush was the owner of the Bafana Bafana brand name after the company registered it as a trademark in 1993.

Stanton Woodrush now owns 49,9%, while Safa holds 50,1%.

The company reportedly made millions of dollars during the 2010 World Cup from merchandise that carried the name Bafana Bafana and the association has grown tired of being forced to share the profits with Stanton Woodrush.

"The problem is from a legal and commercial starting point because the name (Bafana Bafana) is also owned by another entity other than Safa," Jordaan said

Lol, I guess we shouldn't be surprised that SAFA isn't being honest as to why it wants to change the name.

If I remember correctly some guy actually trademarked "Bafana Bafana" sometime in the 90s, so SAFA can't actually use the nickname unless they pay this individual.

Or my memory could just be failing me and I'm wrong.

I really like the name Bafana Bafana, even though I don't know what it means, it still rolls so nice of your tounge. But in the end I don't actually watch football, so I don't actually care if they change it. Just think it's stupid that they only want to do it now, I would have done it as soon as we got the bid to host the soccer world cup. They would of made alot more money...

It literally translates to "The Boys ,The Boys", but it's supposed to evoke an image of youthful, athletic, spritely players. Personally, I don't like the name because compared to the awesome nicknames other African teams have, it seems pretty tame. I hope someone thinks of something cool to replace it.
