A Johannesburg school teacher had to resign after he was caught smoking dagga with a pupil.

A St John's College English and Latin teacher, who began working at the school last year, resigned this week when it was revealed that he shared a joint with a boy he had supplied with dagga a month before, The Star newspaper reported on Thursday.

He was looking after the boarding establishment, Hill House, at the time of the incident.

The school said it regretted the incident and the boy was being counselled.

Meanwhile, a Finetown Primary School teacher was being investigated after he allegedly beat up a 13-year-old boy while his classmates pinned him down over a desk.

"He hit me so many times, I ended going numb... by the time he was done I couldn't feel anything," the pupil was quoted saying.

The boy had marked his own assignment and faked the teacher's signature because he feared being beaten on March 22.

The teacher has since been suspended.

Gauteng department of education spokesman Charles Phahlane said: "Upon hearing of the incident, (the department) summoned the deputy principal of the school and the district director to meet with him last week. He widened the scope of investigation to look holistically at issues of discipline at the school."

What? They're counselling kids for buying weed and smoking with their teachers? Listen, what the guy did was illegal, yes, but don't make the kid out to be a victim.

Yeah, this whole story is ****t up... But I'm sure this articale doesn't have the "full story"... Would actually like to know what happened excactly.

I mean, one of our teachers use to share smokes with us, he was trying to be cool, but it was just cigarettes. I don't have anything against stoners, I smoked my fair share. But you don't give a school kid some weed, even worse to sell it to him.

The teacher should be the one going for counselling.

I agree teachers must stil set an example. The world has changed but they look after the kids 6 hours a day and must keep standards up.

I knew the teacher. My sister does 6th Form at St Johns and I matriculated from there in 2007. He was truly an inspirational guy who did some amazing things for the students' writing. He is the kindest and most dedicated teacher and his ability to rouse interest in subjects was amazing.

The way in which the school has handled this is sickening. To desecrate someone's good name over an isolated incident is disgusting. He's going back to Oxford in the UK so I doubt he'll miss the stain that is St Johns College.

Obviously, he wanted to share the creative power of weed with a student who he believed would benefit from it. Unfortunately, the world is still blinded by popular opinion and hasn't the ability to see that marijuana is a powerful tool when used correctly.

I agree, weed isn't as bad as everyone makes it out to be. I've actually had some great experiences with it. But I geuss if he really had to share it with one of his students, they should have done it in a better way. This is only going to criminalize it more.

Agreed. If you're going to ban weed, you should ban alcohol too, because it's faaaar worse.

+ 1 on that. the only reason they haven't legalized it, is that they can not tax it. And why should they legalize it if they don't make any money. So now it just gets crimanilized.

Its still unethical. And if the students are underage its a legal issue. Anything that a teacher supplies to students that isn't related to education in a positive way will be frowned upon

No definitly, I agree. If the kiddies want booze, they should get it themself, the same for other narcotics. We never used to get our **** through someone else, especially our teachers(altough, I was in a afrikaans school, they will beat the **** out of you for trying). And it's not fair to get your teacher involved in this. Some parents are ignorant, mine was. Untill they had to come pick me up from a police station when I was 17(don't ask). I personally don't think the kid was inocent in all of this...
