GameranxBlizzard's Micah "Bashiok" Whipple revealed that the upcoming Diablo III will feature 15 tiers of armor, up from the previous five seen in its predecessor.
"Diablo 2 did not have 15 [tiers]. It had 5. And those were mostly recolored versions of each other with extra pieces stuck on to make them look different," he wrote. "Not to knock Diablo 2. The number of looks it had are amazing considering what it took to render them out."
Instead, Diablo III will contain 18 tiers of armor, multiplied by the game's five classes, and 8 individual armor slots, equalling 720 unique pieces of armor in Diablo III.
"I don't think this is being compared accurately to what Diablo II or even other games offer as far as visual upgrades to a character. 18 tiers, times 5 classes, times 8 armor slots is 720 unique pieces of armor in Diablo III. That's not counting weapons, or alterations to make each armor piece fit both genders. Oh, and right, the dozen or so different colors you can dye each of those pieces.
"I also hope this isn't being confused with actual diversity in item drops. You're still going to be finding tons of items with varying quality levels and stats, but the best are going to always be pushing your character's aesthetic 'impressiveness' forward."
Bashiok confirmed that while Diablo II had more "unique looks" per act, Diablo III will contain a lot more unique looking items for players to find.

Well thats good news. But I am a little confused, is it 15 or 18 tiers?
Also, maybe this is old news, but : Beta in August?
There will be a Diablo III Beta Test, which Mike Morhaime stated is to occur in the third quarter of 2011, with the earliest possible start date at August 3rd, 2011.

great
Can you feel it? It's getting closer.
I can feel it...
**** yeah, this **** better hurry up. D2 is getting old now. :P
Blizzard is an awful lot like 3D Realms, except when they do finally release the game a decade later, it's probably worth the wait.
No, if they were like 3D realms they would hype us for 10 years, telling us Diablo III will change gaming. Then, mention the game every so often so that you can't quite remember the promises made or how long you've now waited. Then, when it's time to throw down and show us the goods, hand over the license to another studio so they can finish it for you but completely miss the original vision and disappoint your whole fan base.
I mean, err....yeah, they're the same.
Mwahahahahaa
Diablo + Rainbows = Diablo 3. And the children cried.
I don't get the big issue over that, though, Diablo with My Little Pony would still be Diablo.
The rainbow thing was hilarious, as much as it was depressing.
Aside from the persistence of what has become the "blizzard visual styling", I've really liked everything I've seen of Diablo III.
I know right? I don't "get" what all the other people was crying about when the first trailers of D3 were released. The art style looked fine, and Torchlight which was made by most of the crew that worked on the first 2 games I might add looked sweet with it's bright colors and cartooney vibe. D3 is bright and colorful but also dark and dreary from what I've seen so far and it looks superb. Imho they nailed the art style.
Are there any details yet who will have access to the beta or is it open to the public?
What people need to remember, too, is that it might not have looked right if they went for 'photorealism', as that seldom works in fantasy settings. Look how quickly Oblivion aged. We saw Diablo 2 in 2D, and those weren't a bunch of digitized graphics, there was a fair bit of colour to it. So trust Blizzard.
Well, I'm not usually the type of guy who moans about a unreleased game's visuals but I prefer the first one (just ignore the stupid naming)
And why the hell (zing!) isn't this in here or is it better to keep the beta separate?
Considering the main difference between the two is a noise filter and some simple post-processing, I don't see why more companies can't offer different 'visual styles' for their games. It's not that difficult to implement, really, and some games already offer it.
