Thread: Denmark bans Marmite. Has the world gone mad?

Default Denmark bans Marmite. Has the world gone mad?

    "That's my Marmite!"

    Not anymore it's not.

All over Twitter, and the news, this morning people are going mental because Denmark has banned Marmite.

According to reports, the Danish authorities must give their permission for products with such additives to be sold. In recent years they have banned several well-known items - including the chocolate malt drink Ovaltine and some breakfast cereals.

Already a shop in Copenhagen has been ordered to remove jars of Marmite from its shelves.

I saw this on BBC the other day. I love Denmark, but goddamn this is ridiculous! Marmite is like heaven!

I actually remember when I was there some years back - we had to bring in our own energy drinks because they're not allowed to sell them there, due to the same laws that Marmite has been banned for. I can kinda understand their reasoning but I think it's being a bit too nanny state.

Meh, as long as they don't ban Bovril.

Northern Europe is worse than Australia when it comes to playing nanny.

This is no doubt the work of the Bovril lobbyists.

The ban has sent British expats into uproar, with some threatening to find ways of getting hold of sandwich spread through the black market.

Lyndsay Jensen, a British expat living in Copenhagen, told the Daily Mail, "If they want to take my Marmite off me, they'll have to wrench it from my cold dead hands."
Yeah, don't mess with the Marmite...

Anyway, why didn't the Marmite people just get permission first? Or why not just remove the added stuff for Denmark specifically?

Oh I apologise I did not know it was the added vitamins that gave Marmite it's distinct flavour.

No I didn't to be honest.

I thought you were saying without the added crap it would not be the same Marmite taste.

    What a shame, poor Denmark.
I always keep a year's supply of Marmite in my pantry ... 1 bottle.

    Nasty stuff.

Additives which have been banned contained in Marmite. No mention in the article as to which additives though.

    Oh, right. Misunderstood.

Because of the added vitamins and minerals.

You need permission in order to sell such products.

The sale of any foodstuff with the "addition of vitamins, minerals and other substances" must be first approved by the Danish authorities after a health scare over their effect on children or pregnant women when combined with other foods with high vitamin levels.

More of a Bovril fan myself.

All the articles seem to suggest, though, that it's just being banned until they get around to approving it, which means they might unban it at a later date? Or am I reading this wrong?

I quite like Marmite. Odd that I probably only eat it like 3 times a year though.

I should probably eat some more to make up for those missing out in Denmark now.
