    XCOM: Enemy Unknown

This is the announcement you've been waiting for: One of the most beloved strategy titles of all time re-imagined by one of the best strategy studios in the world. Firaxis Games' XCOM: Enemy Unknown introduces a wider console audience to what made the storied franchise great in the first place.

Unlike 2K Marin's previously announced XCOM shooter, which sparked tempers among longtime fans for turning its back on the series' cerebral roots, this title is a full-on strategy game that puts players in command of a global anti-alien defense force. XCOM's leader needs a worldwide perspective where threats are identified, populations reassured, and national leaders mollified ? but a tactical mind is just as critical considering every shot XCOM's soldiers fire on the battlefield is under the player's turn-based control.

"It?s been a dream of ours to recreate X-COM with our unique creative vision. We?re huge fans of the original game and it?s a once in a lifetime opportunity to re-envision a game that is as beloved as X-COM," said Steve Martin, president of Firaxis Games. "We were careful to keep XCOM: Enemy Unknown true to the elements that made X-COM such a revered game while delivering an entirely new story and gameplay experience for both die-hard X-COM fans and newcomers to the franchise."

If you're lost, you can find out what all the fuss over the original X-COM is in the in-depth Classic GI feature we printed a few months ago (now available online for the first time), which includes rare insight from series creator Julian Gollop.

The huge feature in February's Game Informer goes into all the gory details of XCOM's destructible tactical environments, the interaction between the real-time strategic view and the turn-based combat, how the XCOM organization improves its capabilities as the war rages on, and much more.

Wow, that is how you handle irate fans.

What? You mad that we turned your strategy game into a FPS? How about we make a strategy game and an FPS? Booya! You like that? YOU LIKE THAT?

I'm glad for old time fans that wanted their old XCOM back (Which incidentally you can buy for next to nothing on Steam today) but I'm still looking forward to the FPS. The more XCOM, the better right?

I'm super intrigued by this. I'm not 100% sure that Firaxis is the best bunch for this game, but at least we know they'll build something with brains.

Finally! I am super excited about this!

A part of me died when I learned about that X-com imposter that was that puzzle game thing in the 60s or whatever.

A little off-topic: While on the topic of X-Com, Steam have got Today's Deal of X-Com: Complete Pack (That's 5 games) for 5 dollah. So if you haven't played the games before, it's a great opportunity to get stuck in.

12 hours left, so get a-buying.

More importantly, if Sid is involved, it would almost certainly be fun.

They didn't change it back. They are just making another one. That is the beauty.

    Did they say turn-based combat?

    AAAAARGH MY PANTS!

If they stick to that I will be so so happy! I'll probably cry a little. Please, please, please let this happen. If they just stick to the original concept and update as necessary without changing it to "fit in" with RTwP or some such **** then this will be the best game in the world, forever. It totally will be.

Just to finally clear up some confusion:

That Other XCOM Game Is Still Coming

2K Games' other XCOM title developed by 2K Marin is still coming, the publisher confirmed.

This morning, 2K announced XCOM: Enemy Unknown, a strategy game developed by Civilization creator Firaxis. The publisher first unveiled the 2K Marin XCOM game, a first-person shooter, in April 2010. The game has since seen its fair share of delays, leading many to believe the title will never ship at this point.

Today's announcement doesn't mean 2K Marin's title is canceled, however. Below is 2K's statement on the matter:

2K Marin’s XCOM and Firaxis’ XCOM: Enemy Unknown are two different games that draw from the classic XCOM universe. Each game offers a unique XCOM experience in different genres, as envisioned by two different studios with unique creative visions. 2K Marin’s XCOM is a tactical squad based shooter, offering boots-on-the-ground action through the experience of an XCOM agent leading a team into combat against a dangerous, unknown enemy threat. 2K Marin’s XCOM is a character driven experience and offers a look at the origin of the XCOM organization as it faces its first threat from outside our world.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown, currently in development at Firaxis Games, is an action strategy title that will be instantly recognizable to fans of the original XCOM, while offering a ground-breaking gameplay experience for today’s console and PC gamers. With equal emphasis on deep strategy and intense tactical combat, XCOM: Enemy Unknown puts players in control of the entire XCOM organization, managing resources, improving technologies, and overseeing their combat strategies and individual unit tactics, while battling a terrifying alien invasion around the globe. Released in 1993, the original XCOM is widely regarded as one of the best games ever made and has now been re-imagined by the strategy masterminds at Firaxis Games.

XCOM from 2K Marin is scheduled to ship during Take-Two's 2013 fiscal year, which begins on April 1, 2012 and ends March 31, 2013. XCOM: Enemy Unknown is coming this fall.
If I have the money, I'm getting both.

I thought the FPS X-Com was something to be excited about, I didn't see anything wrong with it, other then it might being close to Bioshock in design.

I hope they can pull off what the first game pulled off all those years ago. Even playing it today, there's something really creepy about shooting down a UFO, then exploring a farm slowly and carefully, then seeing something in the shroud for a split second during the enemy phase, then having one of your team melted as a Grey shoots her right through a barn wall before vanishing, followed by panic as you try to shoot them with your pathetic guns knowing if you don't kill at least one, your whole team could get wiped out as the Greys start appearing out of every dark corner -AAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRGH!!

    Nostalgia Flash-back >_<

First Screens And Details Of XCOM: Enemy Unknown

Come on in to have your questions answered and to get the first public look at what Firaxis' XCOM: Enemy Unknown looks like in action.

Find below our answers to some of the most common questions we've seen floating around the Internet since our cover reveal last week.

    Wasn't there another XCOM game?
Yes, 2K Marin is developing a previously announced first-person shooter, simply called XCOM. That game was originally scheduled to come out last year, but has since been delayed out of 2011.

How do those games relate to each other?
The shooter takes place earlier in the fiction, chronicling the aliens' first attacks in the United States. The strategy game we're talking about here deals with the global response to the later full-blown alien invasion of Earth.

So this is some kind of RTS?
No, not in the way the term "RTS" typically applies to games like StarCraft. The real-time element of XCOM is confined to the global view, where the player keeps track of known UFOs and abductions going on around the world. Managing research and development at the XCOM organization's secret base can be done at the player's leisure, and all combat is completely turn-based.

You switch between real-time and turn-based?
Yes. When your aerial transport lands at an abduction site, the game switches to a tactical view and you command your squad of personalized soldiers in battle against an unknown alien threat.

So what do you do in the real-time global view?
On the strategic layer, players direct research into alien technology, give their engineers and foundries fabrication requests, interact with the nations of the world (who have to be mollified to secure funding for XCOM), intercept airborne UFOs with jet fighters, level up their soldiers and recruit new ones, and dispatch the Skyranger transport to engage alien incursions on the ground.

Is this a remake of the original?
Kind of. Re-imagining is probably a better term. Firaxis' XCOM: Enemy Unknown doesn't directly copy the underlying game systems – for instance, soldiers have different stats than they did in the 1994 original – but the concepts are still here. Players still have to manage multiple resources and threats on a global scale in a seemingly hopeless war against extraterrestrial forces with far better technology and capabilities.

Is this going to be dumbed down for the "wider console audience"?
Firaxis is undeniably streamlining aspects of the game and removing no small amount of micromanagement, but from what I've seen I wouldn't call it "dumbing down" the game so much as getting rid of tedium and uninteresting mechanics. Soldiers still die permanently, fog of war and line of sight are hugely important in combat, and you absolutely can lose the game if you screw up too badly.

    Does it look awesome?
I came away from our visit to Firaxis' studio extremely impressed by XCOM: Enemy Unknown. The project is far from done, but I am personally thrilled at the prospect of playing the final game.

This can only be good. Enemy Unknown was a classic for the ages, and it's nice to see a real remake. Even if it's more like those tributes, such as Aftermath and whatever, it's XCOM like it's meant to be. I don't have anything against the FPS really, but I can't say I'd ever want it.

Why Firaxis Loves XCOM. - If you're an old skool gamer then this will make you want to re-install. I know that's what it did to me. If only I could get it to work. For those of you who don't get it (get off my lawn!) maybe this will make you understand why some of us are so much more amped for this than the FPS.

The Art of XCOM - purdy!

The Music Of XCOM - hearing the theme, but just different, nearly brought tears to my eyes.

I am so looking forward to this. More than anything else actually. For me, no game on the horizon compares right now.

I could not stop smiling when I was listening to that music. Damn this has to be my most anticipated game for 2012 (or2013)! I will even go as far as saying that I want this game more than what I want Diablo 3. Yes, I love X-Com! \0/

I see it's coming to consoles as well. Let's hope the PC UI isn't gimped. It is Firaxis though.
