He told the one guy he's a crap critic and that the others were ****ting on his thread (I can't remember exactly).
Don't recall anyone saying his games are crap and that he must bugger off.
Uh huh, because no-one gave him a chance or two or three.Should we not give people chances instead?
Well, post him leaving... or pretending to leave or whatever he's done... people have called his games crap. Actually, now that I look through the thread you yourself (KalMaverick) made an analogy with taking a crap and him making his games. And other people made similar analogies or gave unconstructive criticism after a point.
Also, changing his thread title from "Nicholas Nel needs suggestions" through to "Nicholas Nel needs psychological help", or whatever it was, is telling him to bugger off by any stretch of the imagination.
All Dislekcia is saying is that we should be better than that. And I agree.
I didn't behave myself as well as I should have and in future I plan to do better... or just say nothing when I've got nothing constructive to say. Very quickly his threads went from sincerely trying to help him to trying to force him to see things our way through bullying tactics. In hindsight I think we should have rather said nothing after a certain point.
It may have degraded into a bullying thread. Sure. However he made it abundantly clear that if you didn't like his game that you were being a **** regardless of the feedback. Self fulfilling prophecy and all that. Blackships and Flanges critiques alone should have sufficed and were pretty constructive yet he refused to even acknowledge them based on a superficial 'You couldn't do better'.
I don't think that the forumites are to blame in this case. He only wanted to punt his game and receive praise. He didn't want constructive critique and we couldn't praise his efforts. That is the tale.
Um, read what I said again it has nothing to do with his games.
If you want to use the very same logic:
Not a very nice comment if you don't try and understand what he is trying to say.You can polish a turd all you like, but you still end up with a piece of crap.
Possibly, but last time I checked this is still a forum right? In hindsight I think we should have rather said nothing after a certain point.

I don't think anyone was harsh to Nel until Geo edited his thread title and he shat his pants. The reason Nel exploded is pretty friggin obvious, it was definitely not in response to how he was being treated by Game.Dev regs... Hence my point: It's cool that people were being so nice to him and it sucks that that was nuked in a selfish instant by one dude.
I don't think anyone should be trying to justify that Nel was going to explode anyway and thus this sort of thing was inevitable - his continued non-explosion up until that point was very different to how he normally behaved. That's all I think BlackShips and I are trying to say.
Really? May I ask why you think that?

Mostly because in Miktar's days you were one of the biggest dicks here.
Fossilized posts? From just slightly more than a year ago?
Either way, bad impressions last. Having lurked around here since mid-2008, if Miktar were to return I'd give you a month, maybe two, and you'd be up to your old antics again.
Either way, this isn't really a thread to discuss my perceptions of moderators past or present, so I'll leave it at that. I haven't exactly handled myself properly in either of the threads I posted in in the game.dev forum, so I'll show myself out.

I never suggested that Dislekcia's insinuation that Nel's games were turds was a helpful approach.
But obviously the quality of the forum is dependent on the quality of the responses. Unconstructive criticism, insults and flame wars don't help anyone. That doesn't stop you from writing them, but that's not the point.
I'd like for everyone to take away from this something, and maybe be able to do better next time, to keep their cools or at take longer before chasing away antisocial posters... regardless of how big a jerk they are or how arrogant they are about their games...
Instead of internet high-fiving each other about flinging witty insults at the people they've chased away.
But maybe that's asking too much from this forumity. :(
Indeed.
Although just to be clear, no-one here chased him away. Geo changed his thread title, he got ****ed, he rage-quitted.
None of us chased him away did we?
Thank goodness that's not us, right? Because I don't recall seeing that anywhere.Instead of internet high-fiving each other about flinging witty insults at the people they've chased away.
Really what are you on about? But maybe that's asking too much from this forumity. :(

That kind of was us: From Nicholas's perspective that's an insult... Nicholas being the guy ****ting his pants... followed by an internet high-five. That's not the spirit of the conversation perhaps, I'm sure SkinkLizzard and Zoop didn't mean it maliciously, but none-the-less it was happening at Nicholas's expense.
Just to reiterate I don't think I behaved well here either. I believe I failed Nicholas, and even though there probably was no way I could have actually helped him, I think I could have failed less hard.

Was this not after he already left?
Listen I get what you're saying and I agree but you're nitpicking at silly things now, this is still a forum and there will always be joking and tomfoolery.
If people were to feel insulted and throw fits every time something doesn't go their way then I don't know...
Skinklizzard's post was a very, very old forum meme, hence why I responded to it the way I did.
Either way, I don't see any of us being in the wrong here. Nicholas has a reputation for being an ass here, people try to help him every time, and the situation ends the same every, single, time. People were being exceedingly nice to him, despite past differences, and he responded the same way he always does. Only then did people respond in kind. People aren't going to just fade into the woodwork when someone starts slinging insults, especially not if they actually spent a fair amount of time and effort trying to help him.
I honestly don't see the issue with that. Nicholas should just be happy I'm not overly bored, because I've seen him on numerous other forums and I could very well go reveal what an asshat he is there.
heh ok in hind sight I guess my post could be seen as being at nics expense. Was really aimed at those ****ting their pants about him '****ting his pants' which is what the original poster of the line, that became a meme, did.
Of course I'm guilty of forgetting that tone doesn't carry over to text very well.
Right. This has gone on long enough.
