Default The next 30 years of Gaming

30 years ago, in 1982, saw the birth of home gaming on a large scale. With the advent of the Commodore 64 in January of that year & the ZX Spectrum closely following. Computer gaming became a new hobby. Obviously there was the pong machine, & the early Atari console in the late 70's, but this is renowned as the start of, well, the home gaming revolution.

So, I wonder. What will my 2 year old be playing in 30 years time. I remember playing "Jet Set Willy" while listening to Break Machine, & now I spend a lot of my spare time running round online worlds in MMO's. Things have changed an awful lot.

My guess is we will see current popular genre's like FPS & RPG's taken into Fully Immersed realms. The tech is already there, but it's not being used as a platform to build home gaming titles on as yet.

With the rate of technology expansion ever increasing, what do you see in the next 30 years?

Total Immersion is Virtual Reality, I really would like this also. I've been trying to think of how things will evolve. I can't think of any new genre's, but that may just be my brain working slow.

The thought of running around a Fantasy MMO world, with improved graphical capabilities, & feeling like you are in that scene. Awesome

It really is hard to say what gaming will be like in 30 years, because tech progression is a really unpredictable beast.

However, in the foreseeable future, there's some nifty **** in the pipelines.

Haptic technology (already used in medicine), provides sense of "feel" and "touch". I know, force feedback and rumble and all that **** is Haptic, but there's some breakthrough stuff coming through in the future which is mindbending. Touch-screen surfaces which can imitate the feel of textures and motions, really amazing stuff.

Once this tech gets incorporated into gaming, it will be crazy good. Imagine playing a fishing game where you actually feel the bites on your controller?

Augmented Reality also has a lot of potential. Using the real world as your playground and being able to manipulate it to suit you and your game sounds fun.

Look at the potential its got on the PS Vita. Remember, these are just tech demos and not actual games, but who knows what the future could hold?

Take a look at THIS post for some vids on the PS Vita Augmented Reality tech demos.
