Legendary. Solo. Never again. Was a weird experience though, died so many times, but never got frustrated.
That is the thing with any HALO title, you never get tired of dying on Legendary.

I'm also part of the normal, medium crowd. Don't want to struggle too much in a game (controllers are rather expensive to replace). And then I gone and bought Dark Souls. Oh the horror! o.O

But what a game! The difficulty is part of the games identity (and largely overstated in my personal opinion) and is designed in a very specific way to create specific feelings of dread and helplessness in the player to match the overall tone of the world and the story they're telling.

As far as I can remember the only game I ever finished on anything harder than normal mode was Bayonetta, but they called the hardest difficulty infinite climax or some such nonsense, but the game really didn't start until hard difficulty and it only got more fun from there. Everything else is there to entertain and make me feel awesome. If I want to die a lot, and throw my cat at the controller, I'll go play online.

I used to play normal/medium/default religiously, but these days I mix it up, not only for achievements, but for enjoyment as well. Games like CoD I never play on any difficulty setting other than medium, because there's no point in playing through it on Veteran as the same enemies just spawn from the same blocked-off hallways in the same order the whole time, and you basically just trial and error your way through, or lie on your face most of the time.

Arkahm City you have to play on hard though. That way you actually have to use the combos and various fighting methods to just survive. On normal or easy you can just mash the X button pausing only to press Y when you see someone with massive lightning bolts encircling their heads. In horror games like Dead Space the harder difficulty settings add to the intensity of the game, as you know when you're in a firefight there's a very good chance you'll die. The monsters lose their power when they're easily defeated. That's what makes Amnesia such a horrifying game... which I haven't finished yet...

I prefer to play on normal first time round, and maybe later on, I'll try the hard setting. Games are meant to be fun, not to frustrate the hell out of you. What are you trying to prove by playing the game straight up on the "insane" level? Some of you might argue that you like a challenge, but if you have to be honest, are you REALLY enjoying it?

Edit: Batman Arkham City on New Game+, is absolutely insane! I couldn't even get past the prison stage. Was so amped to play the game with all my upgraded gadgets, but the dev's made sure you won't get far without throwing your controller...

For me it is important to distinguish between frustrating and challenging. Frustrating events are usually the events which rely solely on trial and error. What the result is then is a string of unavoidable deaths which by their very nature are unwanted seeing as the point of most games is to avoid death. Although some games get this right by avoiding any lengthly waits between failed attempts, and allowing cut-scenes to be skipped, generally speaking trial and error is a one-way ticket to frustration for me.

If it is about mastering the game mechanics however I generally feel the game becomes a challenge. There may be an element of trial and error initially, whilst still learning the system, however as you become more proficient with the mechanics the ability to avoid death in unknown circumstances is a sort of reward.

Frustrating games, unless there are trophies, will be play on normal/easy. Challenging games hard.

Super Meat Boy and Trials HD are two of the only games where trial and error works for me. Otherwise, I'm also a Normal/Medium guy, although when it comes to playing with others, I don't mind pumping up the difficulty.

For instance, Modern Warfare 2 and 3. A friend and I played through all the MW2 Spec Ops missions (Besides the 3 Echo missions. **** Echo.) on PC recently and I'm attempting the same with MW3 on 360. The difficulty is ridiculous, but if there's someone with me, I find we push each other to the limit of our abilities. I'm not saying I cruised through the campaign on normal (I tend to die a lot) but doing something challenging once in a while can be fun.

SMB (well at least Meatboy)and N+ are ingenious with the instant restart, impossible scenario combination. Also trackmania. It is a challenge because you need to master the system to get by. They circumvent frustration because there is no wait between attempts. And by golly these games are addictive!

It depends on the game. I play most games on normal/medium. Except for fighting games. I usually play those on the hardest setting. There are certain games like DMC, Vanquish, NG, Batman:AA and GOW, which I've played on hard, because I enjoyed them and wanted that extra challenge. Again, it really depends on the game.

Ah, Trackmania and N+ are also fun, although in the case of N+, I only played the demo. I think the reason Super Meat Boy is head and shoulders above the rest for me is in its presentation. The retro art it is amazing, the soundtrack and story give it an almost childlike appeal, and watching all your replays in one go is hilarious, especially if you spent 30 minutes or more on the level. I think I had one with well over 100 ghosts. Even the blood trail you leave gives a sense of progression. All that more than makes up for the controller-throwing, rage inducing frustration in some of the levels.
