Rock & Roll for Geeks, and Other Useful Absurdities

I recently started writing as I wanted to find a new creative outlet. Guitar playing has served my creative needs for almost a decade now, so a new venture was long overdue. To that end I started a Blog called Rock & Roll for Geeks, and Other Useful Absurdities. I haven't posted much, but I'm taking a hiatus from gaming for a while, so I'll be adding to it frequently over the next couple of weeks.

It doesn't really have a clear purpose, it basically serves as a vehicle for me to share my thoughts, experiences, CAD designs and recorded music with the world. I realise that I'm no Douglas Adams or Matthew Bellamy, so I'd really like any useful advice the NAGlings could offer. I only have one song posted at the moment, it's in the "Let There Be Rock!" post if you're interested. I'd really appreciate any comments or suggestions, as I've only really shown it to my family, and you can't ever really trust an Afrikaner parent or girlfriend's opinion, as they're just too polite to say something sucks.

Thanks man! I have around twenty songs, all in various stages of completion, I uploaded that one as it was the only one that was nearly finished. I still need to add a solo in there somewhere, but other than that I'm pretty happy with it. What do you think of the recording quality? I only have RiffWorks at my disposal, which is actually just meant to provide easy backing tracks to practice and record ideas with. I still need to learn a lot about decent mixing and mastering though, so if it sounds too rough to post I'd rather withhold my other songs and work on their mixing more before posting.

Nothing wrong with the technique, it;s the content I find problematic. At least, when I do it, that is.

Regarding the tune: Firstly I'm both an Afrikaner and an amateur when it comes to things regarding good music so take what I have to say with a pinch of salt. The recording quality is superb in my opinion. I wouldn't be able to distinguish it from a proper studio produced song. The riff sounded almost like something Maiden would do so I instantly liked it. And although it would sound good with some solos thrown in it didn't sound like it needed it.

Yeah, I've heard that the comment system on the blog is stupid from a couple of people, so posting any in this thread is fine by me.

You picked up on my Maiden influences? AWESOME! The late 70's and 80's were the best time in rock and metal for me. Priest, Sabbath, Maiden, Metallica, Megadeath and basically any hair-metal band rock my socks off to this day. If you listen to Priest a lot, especially the progressive stuff they did, you'll hear where the whole Metalcore genre started, which is also one of my favorites.

If you like that style of rock, check out Steel Panther, probably my favorite modern rock band (because they're a glam-metal parody band).

Yeah, if the rest of your music sounds remotely like those bands you listed I'll love it.

And if you like Steel Panther, check out Sabretooth here in SA. Steel Panthers Community Property is one of the funniest songs I've ever heard played on public broadcast system, the look on peoples faces as they start hearing the lyrics is priceless.

Well I'm not referencing science in the second paragraph, it references the general spiritual beliefs that if you live a positive lifestyle you'll receive positivity back, and the other is that the universe balances all of the positive and negative energy contained in it. What is it that you need clarified? I'd be more than willing to go into more depth of it's still unclear.

^^^ If you suffer from depression, no amount of being positive will make you better. From the amount of depressions I have, according to balance, then there has to be someone else out there who is a real 'sonskyn suster'.

I'm not trying to solve anyone's problems man, I honestly just put my thoughts down. I don't mind if I do help someone, that would be awesome, but to be honest, those posts aren't meant as a general guideline to spiritual well-being, they're just my opinions and experiences that I've had.

Also, being positive doesn't necessarily imply walking around with a perma-smile on your face. If you're depressed getting professional help or talking to a friend is being positive. If you have a drinking problem, not going to a bar is being positive.
