Thread: Strange VoIP latency issue.

    Default Strange VoIP latency issue.

Hi, I couldn't find anything by googling on this issue and was hoping someone knows the solution. I recently got a new PC (i5 3570, asrock pro3 z77, ssd, 7850, 8gb DDR3 1600). While it has no performance issues, when I use a VoIP program(mumble/t3) and play multiplayer games (dota2/tribes ascend/ tf2/ supermnc) simultaneously, my ingame ping shoots through the roof. Using netlimiter has not helped and when I check bandwidth usage nothing seems abnormal. I can game fine with the same games and programs running on my old pc with no latency issues at all. Anyone got an idea what the problem and/or solution is?

Does this happen with Mumble/T3 only or with the in-game VoIP service as well? I know TF2 has it's own VoIP feature, so just wondering.

Also, what line are you running? You can also set the network priority of your VoIP program lower than the game's to see if it solves anything.

Doesn't happen with ingame voip at all. Running a 1mb line, can have other people in the house doing various things on the internet while I game online and it doesn't affect me(both my brothers could be gaming/ downloading at moderate speeds), but as soon as I open a voip program my ping becomes huge regardless of whether anyone else is using the internet. I tried to set the network priority low but it didn't do much-its not like TS3/mumble are using much bandwidth anyways...(I've also put the settings in both programs as low as possible)

Does this affect only the ping reading or does your game physically lag as well?

Just the pings, to get an idea, dota2 will go from around +-270 to 1000/1500 and tribes ascend will go from around +-210 to 700/800. Framerate stays good, as does everything else.

Yeah yeah I'm asking - if the ping goes up, does the internet lag increase as well (like it would normally). If it's only the ping number increasing but the gameplay is fine (like my DotA sometimes does), I see no reason to worry about it, so I was just wondering.

Yeah, it does lag horribly and thus the reason for me trying to find a solution, I wouldn't care if the numbers that I read were just higher.

Have you tried using other programs like Zoiper?

Well I tried skype with similar problems, no interest in using another program which no one is using. The reason I want to use these programs for voip is to communicate with friends and/or clan. These people are already using TS3/mumble. And I know the issue isn't my connection because other computers in my house can manage this. Was just hoping someone here knew what setting/driver/other issue that I was ignorant of it was and how to fix it.
