Thread: DOOM 3 BFG Edition

    Default DOOM 3 BFG Edition

I have just found out about this:

Bethesda has announced that Doom 3 BFG Edition is on the way to PS3, Xbox 360 and PC later this year.

Set for release this autumn, the game will feature completely re-mastered versions of Doom 3 and the Resurrection of Evil add-on pack, as well as "hours of new content" in the form of seven new levels entitled 'The Lost Mission', plus the original Doom and Doom 2.

Its release will mark the first time a Doom game has ever launched on PS3.

According to the press release: "This genre defining game and its add-on pack offers greatly enhanced graphics, deeply immersing the player in the demonic world of this terrifying horror masterpiece.

"Players will also experience a never-before-seen single-player story, The Lost Mission featuring seven heart-pounding levels that will once again have them on the edge of their seats."

The game has been optimised in 3D and feature 5.1 surround sound, Achievements and Trophies, improved rendering and lighting, plus a new checkpoint save system.

"id Software has fine-tuned the controls to bring the intensity of the Doom single and multiplayer experience to the consoles, and Doom 3 now features the new armour-mounted flashlight, allowing players to illuminate dark corners and blast enemies at the same time," the announcement adds.

id Software technical director John Carmack said: "Doom 3 was enthusiastically embraced by gamers worldwide at its release. Today, the full experience has been enhanced and extended to be better than ever, and is delivered across all the platforms with a silky smooth frame rate and highly responsive controls.

"New support for 3D TVs, monitors, and head mounted displays also allows players to experience the game with more depth than ever before. We think shooter fans everywhere will love it."

With the engine for each of the games being open source and there are tons of graphics mods around for the game do you guys think this is really necessary, I can't imagine this one selling very well.

Seems Bethesda is intent on re-releasing all iD's old stuff. First Quake 4, now Doom 3.

A bit unnecessary if you ask me. I won't be buying this. Especially not considering it has 7 extra levels. The original Doom 3 was way too tedious and drawn out as it was.

Is it just me or does it just seem that this is just to try make money from consoles.

For a moment I was excited, I thought they did a graphics overhaul and engine tweaks, but it looks exactly the same, new levels may be interesting, but not worth re-releasing a game for

Yeah, as much as I loved Doom 3, there is absolutely no incentive to buy this again. I don't think it will sell at all, which I hope doesn't squash the development of Doom 4.

Still got Doom 3 to play actually. Installed it and tried it, but IMO the guns aren't up to scratch. They shoot too slow and I don't like the animations. Eh?

I would actually buy this, for the simple reason that I cannot find Doom 3 for the pc anywhere.

Steam? But for a real bargain go for the id Super Pack.

Unfortunately Steam is not an option for me.

Where are you situated? I've got a copy you can take off my hands if you would like?

Just ask them to move a copy to the nearest store to you. Seriously.

The BFG edition features "Support for head-mounted displays." Which probably explains this:

While the BFG edition is whatevs, Carmack tinkering with VR for possible public consumption is interesting. I'd be all over that.

So why bring Doom 3 back now? Carmack said virtual reality has been pitched since the Wolfenstein 3D days, but now it's finally hitting a reasonable price point with technology capable of lowering latency to the point where it's a viable option. Carmack's big contribution has been the algorithms used to optimize the code for HMDs and lower latency, some specially designed for Rift, but he acknowledges it's the early days. His hope is that the Rift eventually becomes available as some $500 build-it-yourself kit that sets the bar for casual hobbyists — a less mainstream group, but one that's still forgiving of the quirks of early design. There's even the possibility of a special HMD bundle to go along with Doom 3 BFG Edition. That's just Carmack's guess though — a ZeniMax (Id's owner) representative said they're still "assessing options". Even if the Oculus Rift isn't ready for prime time by this fall, Doom 3 BFG Edition will support a standard 3D mode with glasses and a compatible display as well as other 3D HMDs (like the aforementioned Sony model).

I'd actually be keen to get this, as I never played Doom 3 in the first place. It seems like a decent enough game, hopefully with some updated graphics it'll look decent enough to still have some level of atmosphere.

I've played Doom 3 and it's expansion. It was not great but it was not bad either. I would buy this....if it's not too expensive and for the achievements. :-)

I'm interested about the updated graphics.

You're more full of it than most people I know :-P I'll reinstall that game at some point so I can finally finish it, at one point the AMD graphics drivers, even with updated OpenGL, broke all my OpenGL games and I couldn't be bothered deciding between that and Oblivion.

Hehe yeah I know. Unfortunately I'm very finicky when it comes to guns in games, movies and series. I quite like my firearms, and I hate it when people get it all wrong. I mean, I can literally reload faster in the dark than that guy on Doom 3 does - and he's a trained soldier. That's just wrong... :P
