Default Dead Space 3: Deader the Space, deader the face!

Yeah, that is probably the worst name for a thread ever. But it doesn't matter because...

    Publisher: Electronic Arts
    Developer: Visceral Games
    Release date: February 2013
    Platforms: 360, PS3, PC
    Official Website: deadspace.com

Preview: Dead Space 3 co-op confirmed

Co-op mode will feature Issac and Carver - the guy from the graphic novel video posted last week.

The co-op campaign looks to include cut scenes and interactions not seen when playing solo, however Visceral has confirmed that if choose not to play with a partner, "you'll hear everything you need to hear to get the whole story."

Preview for PAR: Dead Space 3 added co-op the “expensive way,” and boy was that money worth it

“This is definitely a very expensive way to solve the co-op problem,” Ian Milham, the Dead Space franchise art director, told me as he picked up the controller to play by my side. You can jump into a friend’s game at any time, and leave just as suddenly. Here’s the trick: The character of Carver is not always there with you, waiting for a human player to control him. The game changes when another player enters, and shifts back to single-player mode after they leave.

    Nice little short story:

    Official announcement trailer:

    Some co-op gameplay footage:

Look, when that new trailer landed I felt a bit miffed that my favorite horror game was turning into a gunfest with an unnecessary co-op partner forced in to make every ****ing game the same. But after reading the PAR preview about the game changing according to the presence of a partner, I felt a bit better. Hearing that you can just ignore the guy and that the story on itself is still fine, kinda soothed my soul.

One other thing: watch the last gameplay trailer and listen to the dialogue. Apart from the great voice acting, listen to the amount of swearing. Now, I'm not going to debate the use of swear words, but the exchange between Isaac and Carver sounds almost exactly like the **** I would say, profanities and all. I like that for once a game got that right.

I'm still miffed. It's like Issac turn from engineer to soldier. I'll probably get over it by release day, play it, then get miffed again. :\

I haven't played Dead Space 2, is it good, story-wise? If not, I will skip it. I enjoyed DS1 <3

Not nearly as frightening as DS1 - mostly because we've seen it before. it does make up for it with cinematic moments, clever design, and general atmospherics. Great game.

It's not bad, but it's not really survival horror. It's a bit more of an action game. Think RE1/2 vs RE4/5.

Scientology and Dead Space: how the horror series may carry a hidden message of religious skepticism

I can't think of another game that has the same amount of skepticism towards religion as the first 2 Dead Spaces (?). Now I want to play them again.

I've played Dead Space 1, sh@t my pants but still need to buy DS2. I've been waiting til it gets way cheaper...saw it at BT Games on Saturday for R200 on PS3! I will most probably buy that next month. That or the Silent Hill HD Collection for PS3 release package!

I don't know guys, I watched that trailer and while the action set-pieces are still there, I'm not liking the new direction too much. Not so much the location, the new planet is intriguing and it might hold many secrets and sure we'll all miss space-walks but it's not to say they won't pull out some other sequences instead. The new enemies though... Riddle with bullets until dead. What happened to strategic dismemberment? Is it now hold down RT to win? And WHY FOR THE LOVE OF NICOLE are we fighting ****ing Unitologist human enemies. Sure you can dismember them but is that not just a little too action-shooter-y?

Still I suppose if you're okay with the added action elements and the co-op does seem cool. I just feel they've missed a gaping opportunity to bring back the scares here. Here's hoping they prove me wrong.

They are, apparently, sticking to the same formula.

It's entirely possible the game is STILL a survivor horror, and that the drop-in co-op changed our perception of it, and the piece they showed was generally ill-chosen, but we know from the Assassin's Creed exposure that studios are generally under a lot of pressure to show certain aspects. In the case of Assassin's Creed, they felt Americans would not take well to you assassinating American people, so all their marketing goes into killing redcoats (even though, in the game, you're not on any one side... apparently).

So, again, it's possible that they were "encouraged" to show action-y co-op stuff that doesn't necessarily accurately represent the game.

Or, you know, it's Gears of War.

I still find it highly ironic that the media for Dead Space 3 is showing it to be Lost Planet, while the media for Lost Planet 3 is showing it to be like Dead Space.

How was holding down RT while aiming at legs/arms "strategic dismemberment"? This was always one area in the DS series that I never quite got. So instead of aiming at chest/head, as is the case in most shooters, we now had to aim at legs/arms? The amount of thought required to kill an enemy didn't change at all. We were just shooting in a slightly different direction.

And it was hailed as innovation, of some sort. I should have put that in quotes, it was the developer's claim, not the words of the world. They called it 'strategic dismemberment' because no longer did filling an enemy's chest or head with bullets suffice, now you had to dismember them in order to kill them. It worked to create tension in-game and if done right, eliminated the need to conserve ammo since you were always doing critical damage if going for limbs.

Hmm, come to think of it, perhaps that system was a little counter-productive. Regardless, it served the tense suspense-y side of things more than the action of it, and that was the point really. We weren't popping off limbs to be cool, we were doing it to survive.

It worked by forcing you to actually stand still and concentrate at where to shoot, instead of just using spray and pray tactics like most other shooters out there.

Yes, but If you look closely, you'll see that her eyes are different colors. Meaning that she could have replaced it with a prosthetic.

The more I read about this game though, the more I'm becoming worried. I know they are only showing action scenes to entice people to get into the game. But the subtleties and the sheer horror of the original isn't anywhere to be found. This still scares the **** out of me. And that was for a game released 4 years ago.
