Laptop issues
So my sister has been complaining lately that her laptop BSOD's when watching movies/series on her laptop, using K-lite codec pack (I run it on my own rig, and never had an issue)
Now I really dont know why it would be doing this, it happened before, but seldomly, so I passed it off as a random occurrence and not so long ago her hard drive gave in, so I presumed that maybe that was the issue, seeing as nothing else causes it
I generally maintain her laptop for her, but she is generally good at keeping it in a decent state (ie. not installing crapware, like most of her friends) I normally format it every 6 odd month when I get the "My laptop is being slow", reset it all up and its happy again, till I get shouted at for loosing all her fonts, as I forgot to back them up lol
Anyway, it confuses me, as video watching isn't that heavy, and she works heavily with photoshop, indesign and a few other adobe products and she says it never stuffs out on her
All I can think is that it must be a graphics card driver (runs ATi 4xxx card, and they generally dont have driver updates), but it's a bit hard to tell, seeing that I no longer live close to her :/
Possibly even a heat issue? which I doubt as I'd think photoshop would put way more strain on the CPU than MPC-HT, and I cleaned the heatsinks a few months back too (but it's possible that they clogged again, I dont be trusting art students and technology, although she does look after it, for what I've seen)
Anyone have an idea what else it would be?

Re: Laptop issues
Well, I'd first run over the diagnostic process.
Check the memory with Memtest, check Hard Drive for faults with HD Tune, check temps on CPU, Graphics.

Re: Laptop issues
Ive seen Klite do this many a time and ive moved away from it.
I have not installed a codec pack on my machine in ages.
What id suggest is download 2 programs
VLC and KMplayer.
VLC plays everything but it feels that its BLu ray capabilities is limited and strains the pc . There for a i use KM player as my primary . The KM player is the best player i have used .

Re: Laptop issues
Very few people actually have Blu Ray drives on their PC's anyway, specially lappies.
Still, I'm a huge fan of K-Lite. It's the only codec pack I use (well, that and MyFreeCodecs that also works well, and no PC can go without the FLAC codec). My recommendation is to simply uninstall the codec pack (along with Media Player Classic) and reinstall the new version. It's all I've ever needed, it plays everything and nothing is left out. MPC's video quality is slightly less flashy than Windows Media Player or VLC's, but the player handles like boobs. You just feel so happy with it, and everything is always where it should be.

Re: Laptop issues
Been using K-lite for over 7 years.
Sometimes windows components update "windows update"
Making it become a bit of a confused teen.
The answer lies with downloading the latest version.
MPC is and always will be the player i use.

Re: Laptop issues
What OS is she using? K-Lite had issues with Vista when I used it years back. For video playback I'd much rather recommend VLC and that you enable hardware acceleration and boost up the quality. It plays just about all of the files I have in my media drive and I've only had to fix it once when I had a sound driver issue.
Also, if you want to help her: Teamviewer. Its probably one of the best remote-login software programs I've used in years. Get her to install it on her laptop, you install it on your side, get her ID and passkey and login to her desktop, no fiddling required.

Re: Laptop issues
I've also. Personally used klite for years aswell, and it's never given issues, it's become more awesome seeing that I now use optic to my receiver, and set it up to passthrough DD and DTS
I started to realise how adaptable MPC is, awesome plugins
Anyway
The laptop runs Windows 7 home premium x64
Looks like I'll have to teamview into it later and try update it and see what happens
Let's hope an update of klite will sort it out, otherwise she'll have to use vlc (which I admittedly cannot stand, although I don't really have a reason too, but it generally a good fall back when issues occur, been ages since I've used)
Thanks guys for the replies, I'll have to see if I can sort it out this evening
Edit: I'll give KMplayer a look aswell, thanks
