Looks really interesting. I love alpha fund games and anything inspired by dwarf fortress just sounds amazing.

Awesome find Zoop
Keen to try this when I get home
I really dig dwarf fortress, but the interface, even with the tile replacements, is really difficult to use, or maybe I didn't play it enough, and I think toad is a ****
But I dig the concept, there some really awesome gameplay elements, I hope gnomoria can pull it off :D
Gnomefortress doesn't technically exist. :P
It's just a play on words, seeing as this game is heavily inspired by another game called Dwarf Fortress. People are actually giving Gnomoria a hard time. Apparently it's pretty much dwarf fortress with a decent UI.
Now I want to play this even more
I saw people giving the dev a hard time on modb, which is really **** of them, but I've seen is that the loyal dwarf fortress fans will defend toad and the game to extreme extents.
Was reading an interesting thread on the bay12 forums oneday, while I was board, with someone suggesting that toad should open source it, the guy had some really good points and a decent argument too, pitty that it sounded like something like that would never happen
I think dwarf fortress downfalls that toad refuses to update the ui to something more accessible and simpler to use
I'm really keen to try GF, work must hurry up and finish
The UI is the main reason I never sat down to take the time to learn DF, despite it looking like an amazing game.
I must say, I really did try hard to learn the game, spent a good few hours trying to learn, using a step by step tutorial, over like a week
The beginning is ok once you learn the basic controls, you can start making rooms and zoning area's, start keeping a stable economy, fun fun
Then becomes more complex when you need to start crafting items, as the workshops are a made up or 3 or 4 symbols, the different workshops look similar, seeing they differ by one symbol, which ends up confusing you, and its hard to keep track of your inventory, and some workshops require a specific skilled worker
Then when the micromanagement starts to kick in, when your fortress starts to grow, **** really hits the fan
each dwarf wants its own room, and the menus aren't exactly easy or user friendly to navigate, to assign them to a room, building items in a room is just as much as a luss
Eventually I got ****ed off, the game requires you to micromanage far to much, with far to little management tools
I eventually got attacked by goblins, first wave was mostly killed by my traps, 2nd wave they slaughtered most of my fort. And then I pretty much called it quits
The games core mechanics are awesome, very well thought out and somewhat well implemented, seems like your fort can become incredibly sophisticated, with irrigation systems, pumps, traps and what not.
The water physics in the game are rather interesting, it actually has volume, so digging into a lake will generally cause it to mostly drain and flood your lower levels :/
Toad is an idiot for not wanting to put a more approachable UI into the game, actually I feel the default ASCII version is unplayable, the texture replacement packs help alot, but not really enough
Anyway, time to download GF :D
Edit: Didn't realize it wasn't free, didn't see the pricetag on my phone earlier, but R66 isn't bad though
Edit^2: Playing the demo, this game is way easier than DF ever will be, seems to have quiet a few elements from DF, like water having volume, I drained a lake a quite a bit by flooding my mines, still buggy though, but it looks like they on the right path, plus I didn't play DF enough to notice if DF does anything this cant yet

So someone saw Dwarf Fortress, said "this looks awesome but the graphics and the interface are **** - I'll make my own" - which is good, because it looks pretty cool.
Why am I paying for an alpha, though, when DF is still free?
Or either someone said, DF has loads of potential, but is crippled but its inferior UI and non existent GUI, I could make a similar game that builds on the concept and improves it, making a superior game
Plus, Toad apparently doesn't want to to open source his code because, well at least one reason, he fears it will cut his revenue stream he gets from donations (according to huge argument I read one board bay, on the bay12 Forums)
Either way, this GF or DF, both make money, even if you don't have to pay for DF (although I kind of was expecting the alpha to be free for now)
I've been playing this game the last few hours, and it's really good. Just very performance intensive on my notebook, for some reason. Not even Towns pulls this much resources.
Its reception has been overwhelmingly positive, though. After everyone got over the initial 'ZOMG DWARF FORTRESS CLONE' thing, they seemed to have realized that it is actually an excellent game.
Zoop, if it's even half of what Dwarf Fortress is then it'll absolutely murder your machine at one point. Some people knock DF because of the outdated graphics, but part of that is because Toady focuses on function instead of form and in DF there's a LOT of function. So much so, that once your fortress starts getting to a certain size things start stuttering even on a high-end CPU.
If Gnomoria is trying to imitate DF, but with a better interface and some slightly shinier graphics I can imagine that it'll strain any machine. Also, it's an alpha... so that might be part of the deal.
Can you post some actual impressions from the game? How much is it like DF? Aside from the graphics and the interface, is there something that sets it apart?
So I picked up this game yesterday, really keen to give it a proper go, soon as all this overtime at work stops
But the bit of the demo I played, was really awesome, although, the 3D block they use for the selecting area's always throws me off though, would be simpler with a square block.
