Thread: DnD Next

    Default DnD Next

The next iteration of DnD is in the works ,I'm very interested to see the new mechanics:D.Just busy waiting for my free playtest material to be emailed then I'll read and give feed back. Currently playing 4e with some friends and to see that they are planning a modular design for DnD Next is very nice indeed as we can keep the streamlined ease-of-play 4e but with a little more story and roleplay complexity from the previous editions latched on.For those interested the playtest is a free open BETA of sorts check it out and sign up here .

Super excited about the direction it seems to be taking .:D

    3.2.1.Discuss!

    NAG DnD Playtest group:
Location(so far) : Outer limits Melville
    Day:TBA
    Time:TBA

    Group(so far):
    -oldtimer
    -Geometrix
    -Telur
    -Kharrak

still looking for more players, please post if you're interested.

I tried 4e for a while, and whereas fun, it seemed to take all the meat out of dnd for me. I'm a 3.5 fan all the way, my friends and I still play that specifically, 4e just felt too much like WoW made into DnD. It was too damn easy really... Hopefully the next incarnation will marry the two and provide something with more depth but also with more focus and ease of play.

Ooh, this is interesting. I'll have a read through the site and sign up for the beta thingy as well. Could be a good excuse to get together ye olde group again.

The divide between 3.5 and 4e has always been interesting to see, not really helped by the beardies who get so godamned angry at those who play 4e that they in turn create a worse picture of the 3.5 playerbase.

As I understand it, 4e sacrificed roleplaying for... powergaming? Not exactly sure, hard to remember the conversations.

Would love to try it if anyone is eager. And close by. And not beardy.

Not really. Roleplaying really depends on the Group not the system.

I will say this that with each iteration you get more tied down to using a battle grid.

I don't really see the problem with a battle grid. There are less disputes about range and line of sight.

Lulz not saying it's bad :P Just that it is used more with each edition.

I kind of like the use of a battlegrid as it provides a little bit more structure to the game and allows a bit more of a tactical presence to encounters.

We should organize a nag playtest group ...that would be sweet.Maybe at one of the local gaming stores for ease of location?such as Outer limits in melville or the underground in northriding.

I live right up the road from that - so that works for me.

Awesome , if we could get a playtest group together that would be quite fun.We need 6 people to have a playtest full house, there are 5 premade characters in the playtest pack and we need one for DM.I've got everything we could possibly need(laminated battle grid , some cheap cardboard circles for displaying enemies and I use cluedo tokens for players). If anyone else has anything to add it would be coolio. If we can get enough people to join in then I'll contact outer limits and organize.Perhapsmore than 1 playtest group if we have enough people,I have quite a few friends who play DnD that'll probably be interested.

Cool. How large should the PC tokens be? (base size). I can bring player tokens from my WFRP system. For me, at least ;P

I've also got several tokens you could use.

But yeah, given that the organized date is good, I'm in.

my hand drawn grid uses 2cmx2cm sqaures(so I could fit as many as possible onto the A2 sheet).but a little bit over the edge is fine.Excellent let me discuss it with some folks and wait for more replies in this thread and then we can take it from there.

Is anyone else reading through the rules? I'm halfway through the How to Play document I'm a little surprised at how simplified things have become. Not that that's a bad thing by any means, just that after the whirlwind of WTF that was 4E, I'm amazed at how much the entire game has been streamlined. It feels more like 3.75E from what I've read so far, and that makes me a happy guy.

I noticed that as well,I just finished reading them yesterday,Planning on doing a read through again to get a better mental picture of how it will play out.I like the save throw system over 4e's it allows alot more variety in terms of effects(ie not everything has the same chance to end),although having said that it does also add another layer of complexity to a combat situation,if effects that require save throws start piling on(for instance spells and traps) then I can see alot of DCs to remember and match to abilities.I do like the Advantage/Disadvantage system,I can see that making all sorts of situations very interesting.

sorry for double posting buuuuutttt I found this little gem yesterday, looks super handy some friends and I are going to give it a shot soon.maybe we could use it for a nag DnD Next playtest group?

    http://roll20.net/

Very handy,we could even try get a local online DnD group thing going ,like the Gears weekly mayhem, but for PnP RPG's.

If anyone is willing to play then I'll be more than happy to DM(unless someone else wants to of course).for those interested(I'll create a list):
    -oldtimer(me)
    -Telur
    -Kharrak
    -Geometrix(?)
If we could get 5 players and a DM then we can start playing ,hopefully using the roll20 app.Like I mentioned I would be happy to DM the playtest,I'm also avialable anytime for the next 3 weeks(quite literally anytime, currently on holiday)So if I could get a guideline of times/days everyone is happy with then we can start.(also I suggest everyone signs up and gets the playtest pack and reads through it)

Yup, I'm keen. I'm attempting to organise a group here at work as well, which I'll be DMing, so having a chance to play as well is perfect. I'm in Roodepoort, so Outer Limits is fine with me. Might be a bit cold on their porch though.

Weekday evenings aren't great for me, so maybe a weekend day?

Excellent, heh, cool I'm also in Roodepoort, outer limits sounds good so far,If it gets too cold I'm sure they wont be too fussed if we move inside ,but I'll contact them tomorrow and check.weekend day sounds fair. Now just to wait for the others,I think I'll PM them.

found this after visiting outer limits site:

Ah I thought we were going to play an online game. Unfortunately I'm in CT so won't be able to join you guys in a live game.
