    Default NBT help

I'm registered to write both the language and the math benchmark tests on Saturday the 7th. is there anyone that can offer me some tips on what to expect? has anyone written the test this year?

(I did the NBT last year)

Touch up on your trig*, and go over the rest of year's math curriculum. I'd suggest doing it in the language you're most comfortable in, but if I'm not mistaken you choose the language when you make the appointment quite some time beforehand. I made the mistake of doing my language portion in Afrikaans which probably cost me a good 5 to 10 percent.

I assume you're doing it for admission to a health sciences programme. With an average of 75 or more you'd have a pretty damn good chance of getting in at UFS, I had 75 and my Gr 11 and matric marks were on the lower side considering the average for people applying to medicine. Freestate University puts much more weight on these kind of tests compared to other universities.

*I think I should expand more. As they asked quite a bit of trig, which I wasn't prepared for. Expect some odd-ish stuff you don't usually see in school, like olympiad kind of questions. Especially proofs and theory to do with circles.

Further, off the top of my head I can't think of much more. I think I remember some differentiation, you won't need integration(though it might be helpful).

If it's not for health sciences then Chill. I completely failed the math section of the NBT ( I think I got like 43% or something) and I still got accepted into the 4 year engineering programme at Tuks as opposed to the 5 year programme.

i was trying to get into wits for engineering. But they only give firm offers for people with 70+. they also told me that they are only going to let me know if i got in in January. so im force to apply elsewhere as wits is one of the few places that doesnt need the nbt results

i decided to share my experience writing the national benchmark test ( on saturday the 7th july) in a short story.it starts as i entered the exams hall at wits university.

as i entered the hall i saw that it was packed with several hundred tiny desks.i was assigned a seat in row 7. i took my seat with 400 other people.there was a nervous excitement that permeated the air, many people were afraid of the unknown trial that was to come. they were visibly still, trying hard to keep calm. others hid their fear by appearing indifferent

the sun had come out to wish us well, its joyful rays soared across the room, expelling ant trace of the winter chill that consumed the outside world.a portly balding man walked briskly to the front of the hall, he flipped a few switches that lowered blackout blinds across the high windows, shutting out the sunlight
, the only friend i had in the room.

the invigilators swept down the rows checking each persons identity and handing out answer sheets. "multiple choice" choice i thought "how difficult can it be?". after examining the answer sheet i cast my gaze across the room, observing each person. many people were like me,glasses, unkempt hair, others looked too young to be there while others still looked too old.

the invigilators now swept up the rows, double checking their work.the hall grew quite and anticipation was starting to grow. i don't know if it was the nerves or because i only ate a small banana for breakfast that morning, but i was feeling slightly light headed. many people had their heads resting on their desks shaking slightly, their nerves had got the better of them. it was just before 8 am. and the last few stragglers were taking their seats. i was to write two tests that day language and mathematics. the language test did not have me worried, but i was barely prepared for the maths to come in a few hours.

again the invigilators swept down the rows, handing out question books with speed that could only come through practice.
the man portly man spoke in a booming voice that had no trouble reaching the back of the hall, he welcomed us the the national benchmark test session and explained a few rules in a thick afrikaans accent. when he was done speaking the session started. a 44 page book, 7 sections to complete, 3 hours and 1 pencil.

i was unsure of how to pace myself.but i eventually found my rhythm.it was easier than i expected.except slight issues with a few math questions. one section down 6 more to go.... at the end of the test we were told to report back to the hall by 12 pm, and were dismissed.

i made my way outside and had a small lunch (two more bananas). i observed many people discussing the test with their friends while they ate.a few were standing alone.i debated whether or not to strike a conversation with one of the strangers(which is completely opposite to my nature) but eventually decided against it.

at 11:45 i made my way back the hall and waited for the 2nd test to start, expecting more of the same. once the question books were handed out (only 16 pages) i had two pleasant surprises. the first was that we could write at our own pace and leave whenever we finished. and the second was that they had given us a formula sheet.i was surprised as i had been told that one would not be provided.the test started and once i had finished i scolded my self for not brushing up on a few crucial aspects of math.

in total i wrote for two hours an could not wait to get home and have a bite to eat.i was glad it was finally over and hoped that the results would not be too bad when the arrived in three weeks time.

Funny, I also wrote my NBT last Saturday, at UCT.

The AQL went perfectly fine, and I think the maths was alright except for a couple of questions. There really was a lot of trig.

for how long did you write the maths section?
