Yes, it's not a direct sequel to Origins!

It will please many of you who weren't fans of the first Wolverine film to know that the new film won't be a direct sequel to X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

In an interview with Total Film magazine (via Coventry Telegraph) about where The Wolverine fits into the landscape of the other X-Men films, Jackman said:

"We've deliberately not called it Wolverine 2 because we want it to be placed and feel like a standalone picture. With an all-new cast and setting it in Japan, it's going to give us a whole new visual aesthetic. The approach to character means we won't be overloaded with mutants and teams and the like, so it'll be more character-based. I think in many ways it will feel like a completely different X-Men film."

Coming to theaters on July 26, 2013, the James Mangold-directed action adventure co-stars Will Yun Lee, Hiroyuki Sanada, Hal Yamanouchi, Tao Okamoto, Rila Fukushima and Brian Tee.

In the film, Logan begins a forbidden romance with a Japanese woman whose hand in marriage is, unfortunately, promised to another man. Since Logan won't take "no" for an answer, it puts him into battle with her father and her samurai-sword-wielding brothers and Silver Samurai.

Hmm. Interested. No "X-Men" focus will mean more love for the individual character, meaning similar movies to Spider Man, Thor, Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, etc. etc. Character development (like in Origins with Wolverine when he was still a lumberjack) will be VERY welcome, I like Wolverine with a little character development. Anyway, the movie will have to play out after Origins. I just took a closer look at the cover image (first posted in OP) and those claws are Adamantium fo' sho'.

Also, I apologize for saying beard-wielding guys are drunks. That's not true. I know many drunks who don't have beards (I kid, I kid). I think this will just help Wolverine look more and more like an unfavoured suitor to the Japanese beauty he's sure to woo in this movie.

Only one more thing: Release date, y u so late???

It was already hinted that he'd be in Japan in the after credits scene in Origins, so of course it has to happen after the events in Origins. :p

I'm really excited for this. I actually watched Origins again two or three days ago and loved it more than the first time. I think the first time I watched it was in cinemas a couple months before I realised I needed glasses, so visuals were pretty poor in my mind.

    The Viper has been cast!

After numerous rumors surrounding the part of Viper, actress Svetlana Khodchenkova (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy) has been officially selected for the role in James Mangold's The Wolverine.

    From ComicBookMovie.com a first plot synopsis ...

Based on the celebrated comic book arc, THE WOLVERINE finds Logan, the eternal warrior and outsider, in Japan. There, samurai steel will clash with adamantium claw as Logan confronts a mysterious figure from his past in an epic battle that will leave him forever changed.

He's always been the most popular (and for me interesting) of the lot. Also, because he's practically immortal and is really old there are a lot of stories you can put him in and a LOT of history you can go through.

Well that is because no one cares about the other x-men (except you) and everyone wants to find out about wolverine (except you). ^_^

    Also, this:

Also I don't know if you know this but he has mother****en claws made outta mother****en adamantium.
Serious though, he is by far the most interesting character in the x-men universe, and just like Squirly said, there is an endless amount of situations you can put him in. Plus, Hugh Jackman is badass.

I think Wolverine is best when away from the X-Men, personally. What could he possibly have in common with that apple polisher, Scott Summers? (I know they don't get on, but still, them being on the same team has always seemed odd to me.) So I quite like the sound of the movie so far.

But for me, the absolute best Wolverine was the one who had lost his Adamantium. There wasn't *snickt* in every single comic, and he was really struggling to overcome some serious personal demons. Going through some personal problems of my own at the time, I strangely yet gratefully found comfort in that era of Wolverine comics. He was more of a man (a feral one, mind you) and less of a hero.

    Pretty sweet new poster:

Looks like he has the Muramasa blade (a sword which negates healing factors in the comics) so that could be interesting.
