Apple's new iPhone 5 is launching on the 12th this month

Well, just as a teaser, Apple has invited journalists and the public to the unveiling if what looks to be the iPhone 5 (if you look at the shadow carefully). Its unlikely that they'll reveal anything else, although the rumoured iPad mini might be a possibility. Its a good thing Microsoft and Motorola had their press launches before the 12th, but now they're in danger from bring drowned out by the clamouring Apple fans looking for their next upgrade. HTC has an event scheduled for the 19th and Amazon is doing a reveal of their latest Kindle lineup today. Assuming that Apple doesn't use Silverlight for their streaming, I'll be bringing a by-the-minute update of the conference update on Twitter and on NAG Online as well. Stay tuned!

It's happening at 1am here(Western Australia), luckily I'm working nightshift. So I'll be watching this on my Samsung G II.

I wonder what lies behind curtain number 5.
    More patent law suits?

I think they're pretty much done with the patent trolling. No other phone looks like an iPhone these days and I suppose that's all that Apple wanted. Maybe everything goes back to normal now.

    That's not entirely true..

A chinese company has actually copied the design of the iPhone 5. It's called the GooPhone i5, and they've even managed to patent the design. Its been the hot topic as of late: http://www.techspot.com/news/50053-c...sue-apple.html

It's going to be interesting to see how this plays out.

    Gotta love the Chinese.

A country where copyright means didley. If GooPhone has already patented the Goophone I5 in China, then Apple has no hopes. Anyone remember the BMW X5 copy from Shuanghuan motors, a lawsuit which BMW lost?

I said Apple's patent trolling is over, but other companies may still step up to give them a taste of their own medicine :-P That GooPhone is incredibly funny, I'm eager to see how that plays out. If Apple has to pay them royalties, I swear I'll laugh my arse off.

Yep. It's pretty hilarious. This whole patent trolling is really starting to get out of hand. The report is that Goophone is waiting to sue, as soon as the iPhone 5 is released. So we should get more news later today.

I'm doing a live feed coverage if anyone's interested, over here.

Edit: All in all, I'm impressed by the updates. This is something more worthy of a number change, rather than the 4s which we got just about a year ago.

So, some of the iPhone 5's features need more attention...

Last night I did a by-the-minute coverage of the iPhone 5 launch and was pretty impressed by the improvements, even though a large amount of them weren't related the the phone's hardware but rather to iOS, Siri and the iPod family. But a few features have been overlooked and poo-poo'd by numerous Apple haters on the internet and I thought that some things should be set straight. Better the devil you know than the devil you don't, right?

First up, that Retina display and the 16:9 ratio.

I know next to nothing about the iphone, but I was listening to The Tech Report podcast last night, and none of the guys present seemed to be overly impressed by the phone, saying it's basically a small upgrade from a 4s, and that it could and should have incorporated some genuinely new tech.
    Don't shoot the messenger...

LOL, that's basically what everyone said about the 4s and it became the best-selling handset the company has ever had. I suppose proper LTE support is something Americans just don't see as an advancement in mobile technology. Give them a week, they'll change their tune.

I think the point here is that it would have been the best selling thing apple has released since the last best selling thing apple had released 6 months ago... because it's apple.

No one really gives a flying ass rash that the iPhone 4s or 5 might not actually stack up that well against some of the top end "super phones" these days, and will still sell for a premium more, but hey, they'll sell like they're the best damn hotcakes ever, because apple lol.

Apple may swap over to ARM CPUs, says Bloomberg

In a way, a transitioning from a reliance on Intel processors to something ARM-based would make a lot of sense for Apple. A recent report by Gartner suggests that this is the direction the company would take and for once I agree with something analysts say - its possible. Considering that OS X and iOS are very closely related and the fact that Apple could design faster and potentially more efficient processors is certainly something the company would love - it gives them more control and more leeway in how things are done. Apple's A-series chips are currently designed in-house and manufactured by Samsung in their fabrication labs.
