Default [Solved] Are Acer Laptops Reliable?

Hey everyone. I am looking to buy a laptop for university, and have found one which suits my needs, unfortunately, I know next to nothing about laptop brands. The laptop in question is an Acer, and so I was wondering if that was a generally reliable brand, as the laptop will be travelling quite a bit :P

    Thanks in advance!

Acer sometimes uses cheaper and thinner plastics in order to get to their price point, but they usually make up for that by trying to shove in slightly better hardware. I'd suggest finding a good quality, cushioned bag for it because like all laptops, Acers will last pretty long if you take care of them properly. Buy yourself some screen cleaner solution as well to help keep it clean (CNA has some nice stuff with a lintless cloth, works very well).

My first choice these days for students would be Dell (next Business Day On-site rules), followed closely by Gigabyte and then Fujitsu because all three have great after-sales service and support. Acer's support is handled by Let Me Repair, who also do Samsung's laptop and monitor support. While its not always up to the standard I'd like, its miles away from HP's third-party repair centres.

Wesley is more or less right. Just stick to their Travelmate line and you'll be 100s. Try get a model number with a g at the end. You'll be able to jam some games on it too.

    Thanks for all the feedback!

Oh, and I will definitely look for some of the screen cleaner stuff from CNA next time I am there :P

    I had a Travelmate once.

First, had a few dead pixels out the box. Then, the hinges broke and Acer refused to replace them (less than two months old). Then, the HDD failed, they replaced that under warranty - lost all my **** though.

Then I bought an Aspire series, was never happier. Awesome graphics card, strong hardware, durable and I still have it some 5 years later.

We used to buy Travelmates for our company, but they were plagued with problems like I described. I suggest that if you're looking at Acer, look at the Aspire series.

We're also rocking the Aspire's for many people in our office. They work, the i5's run like a dream and they just do a good job.

Personally I use a Samsung. Love it more than Acer, because it's Samsung. I love Samsung.

Thanks again for all the feedback. The laptop in question, is, in fact, an Aspire! I should have been more specific initially, but I guess it worked out in the end. Thanks for the help :P

I have a TravelMate and I have no problems with mine. Its just over a year old now and sees regular use. Plus it can play a few games too.
