Thread: Table Top Gaming

  1. #1

    Default Table Top Gaming

I used to play DnD a lot when I started high school, but as real things became more important and my class mates caught up to the smart people in terms of socialising, DnD took a back seat.

I'm wondering how many people still play good old table top RPG's and what you play?

I would love to engage in one again and always wanted to try the idea over IRC or something of the like. I miss having REAL control over what your character says and does.

Hehe, a monk who can't get drunk engaging in drinking contests, or my three story tall lion that used to follow me around but did less damage than my gnome partner...Good Times.

Our werewolf DM moved to Durbs and now keeps promising to run campaigns when he comes up to visit, but keeps forgetting our char sheets :(

Only if it's Star Wars Monopoly ;)

Warhammer rocks, it's just to darn expensive, and not enough people play it. It's also one of those hobbies you need to dedicate a crap-load of time to to get anywhere, which makes it difficult to get into, and to get your friends hooked.

Still, both Fantasy Battles and 40K are excellent games, and I'd never part with my armies.

As for D&D, it also suffers from expensiveness, and requires a dedicated group to really play well - never really got into the casual group thing, to be honest. But hey, we'll see how the whole 4th ed PC-based-mixed-with-books gameplay works out, but I'm skeptical.

Anyone ever play Alternity, that PnP RPG that had a demo released with Fallout 2? Damn, that was some good fun - totally interesting dice mechanics as well - which made a nice change from D20 at the time.

Did a bit of RP back when I was in Pietermaritzburg. Never very intense, but we did a fair amount of Vampire, both Masquerade and Dark Ages and a bit of Warhammer Roleplaying.

Warhammer is fun because you also roll your character class so can end up with something totally unlike what you would normally make yourself, Dwarf Troll Slayer FTW. I wasn't popular because of my habit of opening chests with my hammer. No-one ever got loot if I was in the room, it was all destroyed in the impact. :)

Yup, played some Alternity with Aeq and Mik as the GM. Some rather interesting situations happened there, thanks to the cool way that your abilities worked in conjunction with the whole "Hey, I'm going to try X - how many dice is that GM?" system.

TBH I prefer the WoD D10 system to the D&D D20 stuff, less confusing and there's a lot more room for character development and roleplaying in the new WoD stuff. The new Werewolf is especially rich with a good DM...

I once spent a rather enjoyable week running my own RPG system at university. Tried a few new things with skill progression and character advancement. Turned out to be rather popular, despite people sometimes being insanely dumb and not figuring their mutations out early enough ;)

If you can get your grubby paws on Blood Bowl it's an awesome 2 player Board Game. Games are quick and dirty and because the teams are small figure painting is a lot less of an issue then Warhammer for e.g.

If you'd like something a bit bigger take a Look at Zombies!!! or Munchkin. As a former DnD player you'll really appreciate the humour of Munchkin.

<-- ex M:tG junkie.Spent alltogether too much money playing it competitively. It's great fun if you're part of a group that just does it for the good times, but gtfo the second the 'netdecking' bs starts.

Have also done the d&d thing from ad&d through to 3.0 and 3.5 , playing and dm'ing. Had a short Vampire stint. Fooled around with Shadowrun, and designed my own mecha tabletop rpg/system.
Played around with Mechwarrior- Dark Age miniatures too. Almost succumbed to the Warhammer thing, but luckily common sense intervened. There's only so many habits you can feed at the same time.

This really seems like a has been thing.

Let's approach this from a field guide perspective:

Say I want to get into table top RPG's again, where should I start? Who should I look for? Are there places for people like me? or did this die along with school...

There will be some roleplayers at your university... Finding them might be a bit hard though. Comic shops in your area might have a notice board of local sessions if you're lucky.

Your best bet is probably to start introducing your friends to table-top games. Have yourself a braai and pick a simple system to play in (Alternity for instance, you can hand-hold quite well there) and get them hooked on the idea of participating in their own unique stories. Keep dice to a minimum.

You'll probably have to DM. At least at first... That's always the big limiting factor.

I love Warhammer 40K, and with my largely unpainted Imperial Guard army I've been able to acheive a single draw.

But I haven't played in awhile. I plan on goin back once I've finally painted everything I have...

To add to D's suggestion: You can actually still get the Alternity intro stuff for free. It might be a good ten years old, but it still holds its own against the big boys. It includes one short, yet quite fun campaign, as well as an alternative rule-set. Remember: you can just take the stuff they give you and improvise. The joy of Pen and Paper (PnP/P&P) gaming is you are only limited by your imagination.

the thing i loved most about W40K was the way you often seemed to get into impossible situations. me, Mad Don, and my brother were playing a game a while back (me, space marines and Mad Don IG v.s chaos khorne marines) where nearly Mad Don's entire army shot at the last remaining chaos marine which survived unscathed and then went on to kill his entire army in close combat, only to be felled by a single shot from a space marine.
