It's simple really: I don't like the language. In the same way someone may listen to hip-hop, or look at an impressionist painting, or see a car in the colours of bright pink and go "Man, I just don't like that" - I simply do not like it.

The sound, the construction, the underlying lexicon as well as the tacit cultural byproducts... all of those facets are things that, when I look at them, are things that for some reason, only God knows why, that I do not like. They don't agree with me.

I try not to make a big deal out of it, but as CaptainCrunch just proved rather innocuously - people are somehow rather touchy about their language when you bring it up that you don't like their language, even if no harm is meant and no insult is given.

Miktar - you should change your nic to "The Accidental Afrikaner"

First language: Afrikaans, Preferred language: English (American). I'm an English zealot. :)

Perhaps, but the first thing I'd do is spell "Afrikaaner" correctly. :P

That would be a good move, to avoid embarrassment.

    First: Afrikaans

And i like the lanuage. If it is Miktar's wish, you guys should respect it. If he does not like his language its a matter of choice. And Im sure he did not mean anything rude or obscene by it.

    Cheers Miktar, choice is choice.

Eh - I don't mean to make a mountain out of a mole hill. I just couldn't find a way to really gracefully extract myself from the conversation once it came up, so I tried the direct approach - which seems to always manage to give certain people the wrong idea.

Look, I guess that I'm proud to be Afrikaans, I mean I'm not ashamed. There are certian elements & byproducts that I don't like about the language same as with English.
For example, I like how Afrikaans can just be such a warm and friendly way of communicating eg "Goeie dag tannie, gaan dit goed?". I have my likes and dislikes about English as well.

There's just so many misconceptions about "Afrikaaners" and "English" people. That Afrikaaners are retarted and drive V6's or that English people are rude bastards. In the end, I use both, hell, I even mix it up every now and then.

I hate it when I'm forced to speak perfect Afrikaans or English. My girlfriends Grandpa is like that. Everytime you say a English word he almost gets a heart attack, very proud ek se. I just want to express myself and if that requires me to say a word in any language other than the one you like, I will do exactly that.

    What's this thread about again?

    Oh ya, theories and thoughts.

Hmmmm, I have a theory that this forum is going to knock the socks off any other forum on the web. Why? Because it's got lost of love (wink wink Miktar & Ruandre).

My first language is English (UK) but I can understand most Afrikaans.

I do speak a bit of Americanese, but won't attempt in front of Gldm and Miktar - I am sure they don't need me to embarass them (or me :P )

Welcome Kensei, good to see the veterans move over to the new forums. I've even spotted Blackwolf moving about.

    No, you said:
I also refuse to answer anyone who speaks to me in Afrikaans.
This led me to believe that you would ignore anyone who speaks to you in Afrikaans, which would be pathetic.
Seeing as that's not the case, no problem.
I'll apologise for not understanding what you meant with that comment.

As for the rest of the accusations you felt necessary to throw my way...i don't care much for those, so you can keep them for someone more deserving.

You're right - refusing to answer someone is not ignoring them. I'm glad you understood what i was getting at. As for the rest of the accusations - if the shoe fits...

I don't want bad blood between us, but coming in guns blazing on a misconception you yourself admit to does make things complicated, don't you think?

Why don't you and I just start over. Hi, I'm Miktar, and sometimes I rub people the wrong way but really, I'm not a bad guy. I'm just misunderstood. :)
