Thread: Pro gamers to carry Olympic Torch

Default Pro gamers to carry Olympic Torch

You've already seen Trevor McDonald and Konnie Huq carry the Olympic Torch, and now it's the turn of two Warcraft III players to march the prestigious flame through the streets.

Jae Ho "Moon" Jang and Li "Sky" Xiaofeng are to carry the flame during its procession to the opening ceremony of this year's sports event in Beijing, GGL Wire reports (cheers Kotaku for the tip off).

Apparently, professional StarCraft player Junchun "Pj" Sha will be zerging through the streets carrying the torch too, along with fellow RTS-er Lei "Leilei" Shen

It's because it's the only "sport" that they have celebrities in :p

Most pro gamers are also very good in outdoor sports too.

Or maybe it is because the pro gamers are the only Chinese "athletes" who aren't on steroids.

Then by your same logic sport also isn't sport because it's fun as well.

The world is changing and slowly but surely people are accepting games to be a sport, although it may not be physical, gaming still has all the other aspects of 'normal' sports you need to be good at it: strategy, timing and above all you need a bucket full of practice to be good at it.

I would say that some games should be a sport but some of those idiot proof games shouldn't.

I think the outcome of this debate last time we had it, was that gaming is not a sport. 'Timing, strategy and practice' does not qualify something as a sport. Chess, cheerleading and knitting anynone? "Omg, EPSN shows them" argument does not work, as ESPN shows anything besides cooking and Idols.

Besides, I doubt real 'hardcore' gamers would want gaming classified as a sport. Why try promote gaming to something it is clearly not. By not labelling gaming as a sport, it remains unique, instead of slotting in between Fencing and Hockey.

I don't mean sport in the traditional sense, but rather just something people can enjoy watching and compete tournaments in, like traditional sports. Gaming should start becoming like that. Sport is just a label, albeit a bad one. (perhaps we should try coming up with a better on than 'e-sports')

Anyone up for watching a bit of FPS action? ;)
