Thread: Death of a machine

  1. #1

    Default Death of a machine

My computer just died, power tripped and now my pc has trouble booting, almost certain its the mobo. Also theres a bunch of other stuff my pc needs doing, good time for a general upgrade. Still being relatively new to Pta, any suggestion of good/decent computer retailers/wholesalers in the Pta area?

    Thanks

Might actually consider buying online if I were you.

    Places like prophecy.co.za and take2.co.za

So... you just resigned yourself to the death of your machine and that's that?

Come one dude! We can fix this!

What's it doing? Does it boot at all? Does it beep? A lot? Not at all?

    Any blue smoke?

    Info!

Usually power supplies prevents stuff like this from happening, so maybe its just your power supply. If your PC smells like burnt plastic, its most probably the power supply.
    Correct me if I'm wrong

I think this is a month of motherboard dead, mine also just died all of a sudden, except there were no power drops or anything.

Looking at take2, there prices seem to be pretty good

Okay, well, what happened is this.

Power tripped and started to boot but got stuck on the mobo graphic screen, and would not boot further than that.

Flashed the bios on the mobo, (little red button on the physcial board), at which point it "usually" gets to the option of how to boot the machine, safe mode or last known safe configuration, which i am stuck with coz the keyboard doesnt register and I cannot move the option.

At which point it usually gets the the windows login screen, but I cannot enter the pw, as mentioned before , keyboard doesnt register, mouse does. But it will only get to the windows login screen if I flash the bios each time, something is quite wrong....

Should probably mention, that a number of months ago, the power in the house was dodgy, and my pc lost power during operation, alot......

Bethesda.co.za, local distributor just off Lynnwood rd near the CSIR. They don't have an amazing range of products, but their prices are good and you should be able to find someone that has a dealership with them relatively easily.

Hold yer horsez. It might just be a corrupt windows installation. The last thing you should be doing is buying new stuff.

See if you can boot into safemode and also see if you can restore to last know good config.
If you can't see the black screen and it's not BSOD then it's probably not hardware.

Has he tried a different KB? His mouse and KB might just have been affected by a corrput windows (drivers,IRQ,etc).

Would it crash before you get there? or reboot, display artifacts, freeze, make beeps?

Your not really telling us whats happening only that something thing is wrong.

If i dont flash the bios, it gets stuck on the mobo graphic screen.

If i flash the bios, it either gets to windows log in, or gets stuck on just a black screen, rebooting without bios flashing it will then proceed to get stuck on the mobo graphic screen.

Its not very consistent, so I cant say with confidence that if I do A then B happens.

Ok that is really weird. Ive never come across a problem like that. Only thing I can suggest is removing the CMOS battery. and buying a new PC w00t!
