Default How to get parents to back off?

My mom recently just got back from London and saw one of my test results, and decided it was all the PCs fault, and has now gone and banned me from PC/TV/anything with a screen, during the week? :(

What can I say do to let her change my mind, its the only thing which is keeping me from exploding with boredom. My PC is my passion?

So how did you do it, still do it today?

Say that you need to do research? =p
Maybe that will buy you SOME time with your PC?

    Make an agreement with them.

Say that you will do your homework and such until, say, supper time, and then play after supper.

Studies are important, the better your marks the easier it is to get a job - trust me :D

Edit: And when you say you will do homework DO THE HOMEWORK - not sit and read magazines :D

Take IT as a subject, and have Firefox and jGrasp running at the same time, tell them you are working, because you are, just browsing at the same time. Or barter with them, say that for every hour you study/play sport, you get 45 minutes of gaming/TV.

Or you could use those mass-murdering skills that the games taught you and kill them all, problem solved! Until you're hungry...

Tell your parents honestly that the time you spend with your PC is far more likely to secure you a job than anything you'll do at or for school. It's true.

Um, if you're /that/ bored, perhaps you should study?

Read a book... but do it infront of them.... so they see your more than a pc mongering anti-social...your now a pc mongering anti social who reads books(parents seem to think these things make you smart)

Also... Try studying? I've heard rumours(unconfirmed) that studying could make your grades improve...

Are you saying it's not the PC's fault (meaning PC time could have been spent on studying) and that your test results are due to you naturally being a dumbass?

I've had a long history of gaming addiction and suffering school marks as a result. As much as I sympathize with you, all you can do is kick or moderate it, and focus on your studies. Sad but true bro.

Listen to what they say, sit down and study. If you get bored read a book.

No, really. If you're reading this, you're obv doing it wrong btw.

Yes I know I can study, im generally a very good student, I just had one bad test and now shes gone all Sargent Major on me.

The thing is when I get home from school and sport, im tired. I dont FEEL like working, I hate the work we are doing atm and I need to let some steam off. Why does she have to take away my favorite hobby.

Do you work better in the afternoon or in the evening?

I used to thrive doing studying in the early morning and on weekend mornings and did exceptionally well programming late at night.
It all depends on your schedule and when you work best.

What about setting a timer next to your PC - give yourself 1 hour to play and then do some work.

Unfortunately, you have to demonstrate a degree of moderation when it comes to gaming and PC.
Remember the mantra that kept me going 'My game can be paused or saved at any time - it will not disappear if I exit'

Edit: It has taken me 15 years about to get that balance

I remember when I didn't need a computer or tv to have fun. I miss those simple times. But seriously maybe bargain with them, like say if you get your grades up then maybe something could be worked out. If all else fails, reading is pretty fun, maybe give that a try?

My parents are exactly the same, actually more my dad than my mom. One bad result and you grounded for the weekend with no TV, 360 and PC. It's really unfair because I am also a good student, I just struggle with physics and maths.

But I honestly think that if you do bad when you could have done better, you deserve to be punished, whether that's taking away your hobby or getting a good ol' fashioned hiding. There really is no excuse for failing.

btw, how are you making this thread? Opera Mini?

I've been looking for the same answer too a year ago... 6 months of no games... It was horror-ible.

Maybe it's because in this scenario your parents are the absolute authority, and in trying to usurp them you might just find yourself with a longer ban?

Rubbish. Smacking a kid for failing a test is totally reprehensible. It's just high school, for ****'s sake. I flunked all the way through high school. Save your work ethics for university instead. That's where it counts.

If you don't work hard in high school, how do you expect to get to a good university later on? Maybe not in SA, but in the rest of the world, there are only limited places at good universities and they are fiercely fought over. Getting into a good university is essential for getting a good job (for most people at least).

If you really want to get into a university, there is always a way in. This stuff about entrance exclusivity is something guidance teachers suck out of their thumbs to make kids work harder.

And getting a good job is about having a good portfolio, being good at what you do, and being a rad person. Your education counts for less than people might think. I know people with degrees who are absolutely useless at everything.

Obviously, however, this is somewhat dependent on your vocational arena. Medical doctors should probably have some education stashed away there somewhere. :P
