Anybody know where a 17 year old such as myself can find a weekend job?
Thing is, Chuluka, are you only prepared to work on weekends? I ask because many retail stores require that you work a certain number of shifts a week. If you'd be prepared to work, say, two shifts in the weekday evenings, Saturdays, and every second Sunday, you'd be able to get a job pretty much anywhere - from CD stores to bookshops to fashion outlets, knowledge permitting - of course. Sundays also rock because you usually get from 1.5 to double your hourly rate.
I don't recommend waitering though. It was a painful experience for me, and I'm sure only a very small percentage of people in this world could actually get a kick out of it.
Then again, golf caddy does sound a little better than most crappy retail jobs out there (if, you know, golf's your thing) - so poke around, it's surprisingly easy to get a pretty much unskilled job in the retail industry.
I'm also interested in finding a job, and I'm also seventeen. Would prefer something that I could do during the week, after school. Say between 3pm and 6\7pm. Any recommendations?
My recommendation, don't go near retail.
It's a soul-sucking deathtrap of hellish proportions.
You'll start off and be like "Hey this isn't too bad"
Then after a few weeks "Boring I suppose, but at least it's easy work"
Then after 5 months "I wonder how many days I'd get off if I slit my throat with those scissors"
You'll sometimes find ways to occupy yourself, I spent 7 straight hours trying to come up with the perfect paper airplane design. I actually made a pretty awesome one at the end.....
Basically, avoid retail no matter what. It will rape your soul like a harlot fresh from hell.
Some bad experiences at EB eh ?
now now, retail can a bitch, but it's still good money if you're under 18, and ocasionally people end up at a retail job which they enjoy, because of the other staff, the type of store, etc.
but if I were you I'd try and find something -different-, experiences and all that.
Working as gholf caddy sounds pretty cool, you can work at a 'kwekery' (greenhouse ?) too, about R200 a day and nice hard work.
I've also got a friend who works at a pharmecy, really nice pay, but they use him to deliver medicine as well (unless you ride a bike that's not an option for you I guess).
promotions maybe?
try get a job as a temp at somewhere like look&listen or musica even, if there is nobody there you can go "check" the games section. ;)
Unfortunately one has to have a matric before working at Incredible Corruption. However, I would work at a pc shop rather than at EB as it scores you discounts and experience. So try ask around at a few pc shops.
Yes. I would rather work at a PC shop, but only because of the discount. Won't go near retail again in my life though, unless it's to sue a shop as a lawyer.
The staff at EB is awesome in the majority. Made some really awesome friends. It just doesn't compensate for the infinite tedium....
Just out of interest, were you working at the Cavendish branch?
Also, stay away from internet caf?s where it looks to be quiet most of the time. The internet CAN get boring.
Be inventive. I know most ppl here's #1 hobbie is gaming/pc related. But here's a story:
one of my friends from school had a huge love for reptiles. So at 16 he started breeding them on his farm. Slowly he had to expand cause he had over 50 snakes, 150 lizards, 4 iguanas, a dragon. And countless spiders.
He started his own reptile company, and today he's 20, owns the nicest car, has his own place, factories, and he's super happy!
Moral of the story is in life do something you want to do, even from the beginning. Have fun and enjoy.
