Hmmm wonder about the viability of a similar scheme locally ?
(please no comments about Moodley having a crap job :p)

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - It pays to use a toilet in southern India, as residents are earning close to a dollar a month by using public urinals, a scheme launched by authorities to promote hygiene and research in rural areas.

Dozens of people are queuing up to use toilets in Musiri, a remote town in Tamil Nadu state, where authorities have succeeded in keeping street corners clean with the new scheme, The Times of India newspaper said on Sunday.

"In fact, many of us started using toilets for urination only after the ecosan (ecological sanitation) toilets were constructed in the area," said S. Rajasekaran, a truck cleaner.

The urine was also being collected and tested for its efficacy as a crop fertilizer, an official of the state's agricultural university added.

People relieving themselves in the open is a common sight in India's rural towns and villages, as basic sanitation still eludes millions.

Yuh, and Durban has long been a urinal. In the humidity you get a yellow toxic haze among the city streets. So they recently installed public urinals, brilliant thinking. Took a while.

Yes but have you seen the state that they're in? People in rural areas need to be taught how to clean up after them selfs.

omg, yes! But not just rural areas...I've seen some public toilets in urban areas that made me want to hurl. I don't know why but it seems a trend to put used toilet paper anywhere but in the toilet :/

Eh? Men can keep a safe distance from any surface. I once went to a party in what appeared to be a condemned building. There were no lights in the toilets, and upon tentatively placing my foot down (luckily it was protected by a lot of bootage), I realised that the floor was under water. So I just stood in the doorway and peed in the general direction.

    Girls can't do that!

I once went to use the toilets on Durban beachfront. I saw a cleaner busy cleaning the toilets. He first poured some soap into the toilet, then he took his toilet brush and dipped it into the toilet bowl and gave it a good scrub, he then proceeded to use the same brush to clean the seat, the flush, the entire toilet, hell even some of the wall and floor for good measure, the whole time he's dipping the brush...

I have never been so disgusted. :O

At least they "try" on Dbn beach. Our beaches toilets don't ever get cleaned, I've seen a turd in the basin before. It wasn't a pretty sight.
