Does Sony's cartoony castle game cross the line?

    By Ben Silverman

She's plump, powerful and ready to cause more controversy than "SuperSize Me."

She's Fat Princess, the star of Sony's upcoming video game of the same name. Debuting at last week's E3 expo, the colorful Fat Princess is a capture-the-flag game with a twist: you can thwart capture attempts by locking the once-thin princess in a dungeon and stuffing her full of cake, thereby increasing her girth and making her harder for your enemies to haul back to home base.

According to popular gaming blog Joystiq, two feminist gaming sites have already voiced their displeasure with the weighty issue.

Feminist Gamer's "Mighty Ponygirl" rings in diplomatically, suggesting a new way to play the game altogether.

"Instead of running out into the forest to find cake to fatten up the princess with, why not go out and find gold (which is a lot heavier than cake) to stuff into a treasure chest. The more gold in the chest, the heavier it would be, and the harder it would be to carry," she said, before adding, "Oh, but that's not as "cute" as cake and fat chicks. Right."

Over at Shakesville, however, writer Melissa McEwan cuts to the chase, telling Sony she's "positively thrilled to see such unyielding dedication to creating a new generation of fat-hating, heteronormative ---holes."

Sony has yet to issue an official response, although Joystiq did receive a particularly informative update from James Green, Fat Princess' lead art director, who clued gamers in on the origins of the game:

"Does it make it better or worse that the concept artist (who designed the look, characters, everything) is a girl?"

Hmmm...hope the game's detractors don't mind eating a bit of crow.

Whereas I agree that the game designers could have made the game just as fun with a large treasure-chest the fact is that they didn't. Not because, I believe, they were "typical male *******s" or whatever, it's just the direction they chose to take the game.
If the character had been black there would have been **** about it, if the character was a white male prince there would be no worries about this game whatsoever.
This is just more bull**** people are getting all strung up about.
    That's my opinion anyway.

    Oh my gawd.
Does every game have to be bleached out of all character so that it does not upset someone?

Let's see the game's name contains the word castle.
The hero normally rescues princesses from castles in stories and games.
It all so contains the word cartoony - hence it would have a humorous twist.

I think they pretty much pinned both concepts down in the game play.

I pity the sensationalist attention hugger that society has become.

hmm, seems people will only be happy when the good guys are all circles and and bad guys are all x's or crosses.

No more humanoid figures in games i say, make everything knots n crosses, with blood.

Hahahaha awesome. Seething feminists make me smile :)
I think it's a great and funny idea for a game, and no, a ****ing treasure chest isn't as funny nor and cute as a fat princess.

All I can say is LoL.

I believe they should voice their opinion, they have every right to it (the feminists), but really, complaining about a game that is suppose to be cartoony. Who cares.

I see your point of double standards ;)

I think that game sounds frakkin hilarious :D reminds me of the Two Stupid Dogs episode when they have to feed Red Riding Hood a huge amount of food (so they can get the can of cheese whizz)

There is a difference - this is actually trying to be funny and tongue-in-cheek. And people that take it seriously is like saying that Resident Evil is discriminatory against zombies, or Roman's portrayal of a noble hero in Armed and Dangerous was not his best

    *yawn*

Actually, I find the idea of this game pretty ****ing funny.

Would it be too much to ask you to at least try to stop stereotyping so much, Chevron? Honestly, it seems you don't have a single original idea about anything, and frankly I am starting to find your posts extraordinarily irritating. You know what they say about stereotypes - they're opinions for people who are too stupid to have their own.

    Ha Ha.

You just made me smile. I'm afraid I'm not the stereotype this time around. After the first incident of the sexism thing, where I got an infraction for a pic I posted, I thought maybe I was wrong. Maybe I was just being dumb.

I decided to show the pic to one of my female friends. For all intents and purposes a "normal" girl. Not extreme feminist or extreme girly girl. Somewhere in the middle. Currently in her last year of varsity.

She wasn't offended by the pics at all and thinks that you and Azimuth are just uptight feminists that need to relax.

So just relax. You seem to be the steorotypical feminist. The world isn't fair. Deal with it.
Being oversensitive doesn't help at all.

It is, Repline :D Well done.

Chevron, I have to ask, this female friend, does she frequent a lot of forums? Specifically gaming or male dominated ones?
I ask not to degrade her view, likely the picture was not that offensive, but because it is not just the picture, its everything else. Luckily it has got a lot better with time, but it is not just that picture, its the joke about being in the kitchen (which I am now immune to :/), its the 'omg you are a CHICK', its the 'lulz, moar boobies', its the idiots who complained about the breast reduction in games, its the dismissal of arguments, sometimes valid, because 'females are just PMSing and moody'

This stuff builds and builds until you get one picture and that is the thing that tips the scale.

You will laugh, but I actively refused to play Tomb Raider for many years because I didn't want to play a scantily clad person (Those shorts barely cover her ass). To this day, I still bitch about the fact that plate mail on females in games covers the boobs and only parts of the legs, while the same set of armour covers the male's entire body.
I want better game designs and story, not better frakking BOOB physics >_<

You know, while you throw stereotypes around, its you who ends up looking like the stereotypical "Any women that complains must be a FEMINIST!!!11one" guy.

    No one likes that guy.

I, personally, find the concept of the game hilarious.

They will never understand this because they never have to go through it. :<

(Though the new tomb raiders are pretty cool, I pretty much got through legends because of the story)
