R5m to get rid of Bok coach

Cape Town - South Africa's rugby chiefs have no other option than to support beleaguered Springbok coach Peter de Villiers.

De Villiers and his team were booed in Durban on Saturday after Australia had beaten the home team 27-15 in a Tri-Nations match.

It was the fourth defeat in five matches in the competition for the World Cup champions.

The Springboks, having won five of nine internationals this season, now have a success rate of 55.55% since De Villiers took over the coaching of the team.

Their only really noteworthy achievement this year was when they beat New Zealand in Dunedin. The other wins were at home against Wales, Italy and Argentina.

Under the previous coach, Jake White, the Springboks won six of their eight Test matches (75%) between the time he took over the reins and the end of his first Tri-Nations series.

However, De Villiers has a watertight contract. SA Rugby will have to cough up nearly R5 million should the administrators want to get rid of him after this year's Tri-Nations series.

According to his contract, which ensures him an income of R1.4 million annually, achievement clauses may only be considered at the end of next year.

SA Rugby will then have the option of firing him if he has not met the requirements.

Initially, a winning ratio of 75% after the first year was insisted upon. After a dispute, however, the target was lowered and the period extended to two years.

De Villiers was appointed as coach of the national team in January this year.

Booed at the end of the match

Liam Del Carme reports from Durban that De Villiers will have to report to his employers at the end of the Tri-Nations series, providing only a review.

However, there are rumblings in SA Rugby as a result of the team's third successive Tri-Nations defeat, especially after the Springboks were booed at the end of the match in Durban and also while they were getting into their bus.

"It's not nice, but one has to live with it," De Villiers said. "The supporters are justly dissatisfied. South Africans are proud people. They want to be winners and support a winning team."

"I have a new style of playing that I want to establish. Rome wasn't built in a day. I ask the public to give us more time to master the things we are trying to do.

"When we throw together all the elements and play according to the style I have in mind, we'll be hard to stop."

Springbok captain Victory Matfield also understands the emotions of the supporters. "We're the Springboks, we're World Cup champions and we've lost two home games in succession.

"If you could look into the dressing room, you'd see the players are feeling worse than the supporters are," Matfield said.

"This is our work, our passion and our life. For us, to play like that is unacceptable."

Firstly I don't follow sport very closely, like almost not at all, but hear alot in the news about such and such a coach getting fired or sacked, whether rugby or football over poor performance.

Not saying this particular coach doesn't warrant getting rid of, just more of a general comment that perhaps South African sport is too quick to change coaches when something goes wrong, perhaps not giving them the chance and/or time they need in order to achieve what they had in mind.

Aren't coaches good because they have been coaching for a long time? Having experience with the sport and the particular team?

    On Alex Ferguson from wiki

    Managing Manchester United

    [edit] 1986–90: The first years

Ferguson was appointed manager at Old Trafford on 6 November 1986. He was initially worried that many of the players, such as Norman Whiteside, Paul McGrath and Bryan Robson were drinking too much and was "depressed" by their level of fitness, but he managed to increase the players' discipline and United climbed up the table to finish the season in 11th place. Ferguson's mother died from lung cancer in late 1986. In the 1987–88 season, Ferguson made several major signings, including Steve Bruce, Viv Anderson, Brian McClair and Jim Leighton. The new players greatly improved the team and they finished in second place, nine points behind Liverpool. United were expected to do well when Mark Hughes returned to the club, but the 1988–89 season was a disappointment for them, finishing eleventh in the league and losing 1–0 at home to Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup quarter final.

In the 1989–90 season, despite signing some players who would be important in future years (Neil Webb, Paul Ince and Gary Pallister) and beating defending champions Arsenal 4–1 on the opening day, the season did not initially turn well for Ferguson. In September, United suffered a humiliating 5–1 away defeat against fierce rivals Manchester City. Following this and an early season run of six defeats and two draws in eight games, a banner declaring "Three years of excuses and it's still crap. Ta ra Fergie." was displayed at Old Trafford, and many journalists and supporters called for Ferguson to be sacked.[32] Ferguson later described December 1989 as "the darkest period [he had] ever suffered in the game."[33]

Following a run of seven games without a win, Manchester United were drawn away to Nottingham Forest in the third round of the FA Cup. Forest were performing well in the League that season,[34] and it was expected that United would lose the match and Ferguson would consequently be sacked, but United won the game 1–0 and eventually reached the final. This cup win is often cited as the match that saved Ferguson's Old Trafford career.[35][34][36] United went on to win the FA Cup after drawing the final 3–3 and winning the replay 1–0 from a Lee Martin goal, giving Ferguson his first major trophy as Manchester United manager.
South Africa would probably have fired Fergie before he had the chance to turn things around. Just a thought, use it, don't use it.

Geez, I know it sucks but give the guy a chance. I say after a year look at his work in totality, if it is not up to scratch then fire him.

Guys, whenever a coach talks about patience without ever mentioning a long-term plan you know he is heading for a fail.

It's too soon to write Div off. The game was undoubtedly a trainwreck, but his ideas are valid, the game has changed and SA isn't keeping up.

I do have to wonder what happens during training in the week, there was no improvement at the breakdowns. I think the starting flanks need to be changed.

And we lost 3 of our own lineouts! That is the biggest tragedy.

Worst coach ever he can't even speak English properly he needs a translator or something, geez rather speak in Afrikaans dude, no shame in that.

Wow SA sports is crap at the moment.

Funny how we axe the best coach in the world in the name of progress but we are now going backwards.

Obviously it is not all his fault, I did not watch the entire game on saturday (I had to braai :/). But what I did see in one of the lineouts was a horrible handling error by Matfield, and for some reason Burger feels the need to fall down everytime he gets the ball.

I think hat most people, including me are ****ed about is the fact that we went from world champions to loosing 3 games in a row, and the were not even close, we were wasted. I hope they pull their socks up.

Just wait and see how De Viller goes. Remember we beat All Black few week ago in NZ, and doing well against Puma & Wales. Give him and player more time to improve tactic and performance better in some years later. Also i think we need John Smit to play.

Also remember Springbok was worst performance in 2006 by Coach Jake White and World cup winning in 2007.

Wish bok good luck for improve this weekend and looking forward Springbok tour to UK in november.

    Your Thought?

We were lucky when we beat NZ, just plain luck, if the ball bounced another way we would have lost that one too,

Don't forget JW started with a losing team and turned it around, DIV started with a winning team and ran them into the ground, guy is a joke.

Am I the only one that hear Piet die Snor's big blunder after the Dunedin victory? At the post-match interview he said: "We are not the best. This will never happen again." I lost all respect for him there (not that I ever really have respect for political appointment in sport).

Don't complain, you were lucky you had to braai. It was horrible to watch. The only players that featured at all were Bismarck, Beast and Adi Jacobs.

I'm also ****ed at the situation, but it is too early to despair. Jake White took over at a time SA was in a hole, but the game was pretty much the way it had been for years.

Div has taken over when the game itself is going through a big change, and I tend to agree with the NZ assessment that we are default champions having not faced them at the World Cup.

It's the first I've heard of that unfortunately. Sounds like it may have made sense in context, or he wasn't as clear as he should have been.

That is a load of crap IIRC France knocked those world cup chokers right out of the WC, even if they managed to beat france we would have kicked their ass, it's happened before.

England trashed France and we trashed England.
It's easy for NZ to talk BS now, they just aren't up for a big event esp after 95 lol.

That's 'cause George Smith keeps on tying Burger's bootlaces together in the rucks. Sneaky sneaky George.

I think Matfield is a poor captain. And it is detracting from his lineout work (which he normally excels at). Also Fourie Du Preez is looking a bit rusty. And if Du Preez's game is off, our tactical game will suffer, as Butch James is a poor decision maker. The loose trio is also not too inspiring.

If you are going to play an expansive game you need all the links in the chain to operate efficiently else you will constantly turn over possession, as what is happening now.

That is my one big gripe with theDiV he doesn't seem to "like" the boks, now I am not saying we should show boat or anything but geez have some pride!

That's why OZ and NZ kick our ass because they beleive they are winners, whether it is true or not. We are always like, well if we do this and that right we stand a good chance.

If I was in the team I would be like "I am going to crunch those ****ers", obviously you have to back that up with performance. But if you don't beleive you can win you shouldn't play!

The parts I did see I saw that Jacobs did one hell of a job, he seemed to be the only person that actually knew where to go. THe was one brilliant moment in that disaster of a game, where one of the NZ guys threw the ball at one of our oaks. I was first like "WTF *******!", then I nearly fell off my chair with the replays, just wished Bakkies was there to beat the crap out of that guy.

Jacobs is great. Too small to be an international centre my ass. If you can do it in Super Rugby, you are world class.

Damn, these people are way too quick. So what, we lost 3 games in a row, it's not the end of the ****ing world. Piet has a much different game plan, JW played a kicking game and Piet wants total rugby. But the players can't adjust overnight, give them some time. And I think they deserve some of the blame as well.
SA Sports is crap? I think it's more of a mixed bag at the moment. We got the rugby, and the one silver at Beiging (I lol'd when I looked at China's statistics). But don't forget, Bafana actually did something right when they drew with the Oz, and played some decent football. Australia are also an excellent team, with top players. It's just one game, but if they can take Aus like that, why not other games?
Then there's the cricket: the Proteas were brilliant in England. They really played some excellent cricket, and praise is due. They lost the first ODI, but I think they'll bounce back.

Personally, I think Div is crap. The boks were renowned for the line outs - then we lose 4 of our own??! Come on...

Going back to what someone said earlier, JW took a losing team and turned them into a winning team; Div took a winning team and made them a losing team.

Div is a ****ing stupid ******* who can hardly speak english. Come on.
