Thread: Black Mesa - Coming soon and still looking great

What Happened To Black Mesa: Source? Part Two

RPS: You’ve just spent an entire interview telling me why making promises and circling dates on calendars is a terrible, terrible idea. I am, however, a bit thick, so can you – in any way, shape, or form – narrow down some sort of release window? If not, do you have a release window for any sort of playable demo? Basically, when will people be able to get their hands on the game in some form? Soon? Soon-ish?

Carlos Montero: We’re working very hard to get something out to our fans in the soon-ish timeframe. I really won’t say anything more than that.
Wow, it sounds much bigger than I originally thought it was going to be. But all said and done, as much as I want to play this game, I don't see this releasing in the next year or 2. If ever.

Let's just have faith! I would absolutely freaking LOVE to play this! It's like waving candy in front of a baby. My mouth salivates at the thought of even playing a demo.

I cannot believe that I started this thread in '08 with hope of a near release in my mind.

I really wish this would bear some sort of fruit, as I've played every game in the HL series a couple of times, except HL1, which is a bit silly.

Are you saying HL1 is a bit silly or you are silly for not playing HL1?

I'm saying I'm silly as I have played every other game in the greatest gaming series there has ever been, but not the one which started the whole thing. I've wanted to buy HL1 for years now, but I keep holding out for Black Mesa in the hopes that I can experience HL1 with an updated Source Engine.

While we're on the topic, has anyone played HL:Source? I've seen it on steam, and it's HL1 except on the source engine. The models aren't redone, only running on the new engine with the updated physics and whatnot. Would you guys recommend getting it or should I get the original HL1?

I'm wondering the same thing. Been keeping my eye on HL Source for a few months now. Will probably pick it up in the next sale.

HL:Source is pretty good. Almost exactly the same as Half-life except for the water and some physics. If you haven't played it yet I would recommend the source one but both would be fine. That is if you want to see the game in it's original form. There is also an HD pack with the character and gun models redone which is pretty sweet.

I think the lesson to be learned from this project it is that there's some real retardation going on behind many mod projects.

You cannot helm a big project as a hobbyist and it expect it to function like a paid project would. There is no consumer, there is no end product. What you have to do is keep a community going and you do that by releasing content as it is created. What has been released so far? Nothing. It's pointless for the mod community to waste time on groups like this.

Always so positive. Ho do you do it? :P

But I get what you are saying. Trying to make a game (Because as it looks now, it's more than a mod) and bring it up to Valve quality is impossible to do in just spare time and with a rag tag team of hobbyists.

I'm actually inclined to agree. I'm really excited for Black Mesa, but how long have we been waiting now? And still no end in sight?

I gathered quite a while ago that they ran into the "Daikatana" trap. Also known as the "DNF" trap.

I would love it to be released, but they are overly focussed on trying to have it live up to its predecessor.

It's not about quality or time spent, it's the business model used. Business here being a misnomer since there is none!

If the were going to make profit out of it, sure. However, the fear of rejection is meaningless since there's nothing to lose.

The public is there to help. Yet, they treat the public as if they're consumers. If they were willing to improve on their methods then they would have released snapshots to the public.

Or an open beta. It's much easier for thousands of players to spot and report back on issues that need fixing than if a small group of developers have to take the time to do it themselves.

Also, I think at this point it's honestly debatable which is coming out first, this or Ep3.

Well they just had this whole "20k likes on FB an we will release media" thing, and they got their 20k likes. This is what they released Black Mesa FB, and I must say, it looks juicy. I had quite low hopes for this game after like 2009, but seeing the new screenshots, I can almost understand why they are taking so long.

    They also mention this:

Thank you all so much, it's really great to have your support! With your help we have now kicked off our social-media campaign towards our first release! You can expect more updates from us in the near future. Today we are sharing this fantastic batch of screenshots that really gives you the first glimpse into the gameplay of Black Mesa. This is just the beginning. We have more in store for you in the near future! Hold on to your lab coats!
Was this some kind of test to see if they still had a following? Are they going to release it soon? Or is this going to be another 2008-2009 stunt and end up in a delay until 2014?

I for one hope that they just release it already. The longer they leave it, the higher the expectations become. If its nothing less than valve quality, people are going to shoot them down like spitfires at this point.

^considering their stunt in 2009 I won't believe anything unless they say it's coming out next month :P

But yeah I also wish it would just get released already, those screenshots are tantalizing.

Black Mesa Source gameplay footage leaks

The footage, which appears to have been taken early in the game's production, is not representative of the final build. But it gives a general impression of the Half-Life reboot and how it looks having been developed through Valve's Source Engine.

That is pretty good early footage though.

Sprint and aiming down sights? What is this Half Life the CoD Edition? Still it makes me sad to see gameplay because I still can't play it :(
