Thread: Official "Computer Troubles" Thread

Remove GFX card, uninstall all graphics drivers, and run PC with onboard display port after everything's been disabled. Reinstall as if the GFX card is new, and install drivers. Check if this works.

Reason? "updating" or "rolling back" doesn't always remove/update borked files, specially if they still seem in tact. A fresh install (pretty much "formatting" of the GFX drivers) can fix this if the borked file is removed.

Thank you, Toxxyc, I will give that a try now and post the results later after I have tested it out.

    Unfortunately, it did not work.

I removed my gfx card and ran through the onboard display port, deleted all the drivers associated to Nvidia, used control panel to uninstall any programs associated to Nvidia and used CCleaner to uninstall any other files/drivers associated to Nvidia.

Reinstalled gfx card, installed latest driver, and played for about 30min before it crashed again.

Hmm. I'm inclined to say the problem may be with either your GFX card or the PCI-E slot on your motherboard. If you have access to a different GFX card, test it quickly to see if the problem persists?

Well, the motherboard is less than 3 months old, I would hate to think that is the issue :\ I would be able to lend my friend's gfx card, I'll test that out and see.

I'll post results after I've tried the above.

Actually, for your sake, I would hope that it's the MB. You've still got a warranty on it, so you can get a new one without paying anything.

Good point. I'm not entirely sure how to isolate the problem enough to determine that it is the motherboard apart from trying a gfx card I know works, any suggestions?

It can be many things, but removing hardware that's involved piece-by-piece to check when the problem is solved is by far one of the most effective methods.

Well this is strange. I don't know what I did but now my .pdf documents icons have a small winrar icon in the bottom right hand corner.

    Anyone know why?

If you double click on it what does it open with?

It opens with Adobe Reader as normal.

Let me try and explain a bit better, the .pdf documents have a thumbnail that shows the first page of the specific document, it does that except now there is a small winrar icon in the bottom right that was never there before.

I suppose this explains the best.

I'm not sure where I should post this, but does anybody know of a place, preferably offline, where I can find a converter for a TRRS jack to 2 separate 3.5mm jacks for audio and Mic. I have an Aerial7 Chopper 2 headset but would like to use the mic on my PC.

That is what I need, but where can I get one?

    Thanks

Right-click on the PDF file > Properties > Click the Change button > Select Adobe Reader and then click Apply/OK. Then rebuild your icon cache. You can optionally also reset the Thumbnail cache, that sometimes works as well.

Yeah but unfortunately it was a gift and all I got was the headphones.

Hop off to your nearest Ellies, Hi-Fi Corp or whatever store near you that sells speakers and sound systems. They're bound to have one for you and they're usually branded by Isonic, although Ellies' ones are no-name brand. Otherwise...

    Razer Electra @ R159 or
    3.5mm Stereo Female to 2RCA Male Cable @ R9

You can chat to the guys at Sybaritic and see if they can't send the cable through a bubble wrap-lined registered mail package to you. Should be cheaper than sending something that weighs less than 50g through a courier.

I've already looked at hi-fi corp, although I don't know any other audio places around me. The Razer Electra is exactly what I am looking for, but seems a bit expensive for a cable. I'll have a look at Sybaritic and see what they can do.

    Thanks Wesley.

I have what I think it a dual link DVI-D to VGA adapter. As my monitor only has a VGA port and my graphics card doesn't I need an adapter.

I tried it and it didn't work, I'm guessing because this specific adapter is digital only?

That's it, or your graphics card's DVI port doesn't support VGA outputs, even though DVI can be made to do it. You should have received an adapter with your card when you bought it.

    Indeed I was.

It is only coming this afternoon though.
