Thread: Just a question that maybe you could answer

  1. #1

Default Just a question that maybe you could answer

This question is directed at all those people who tend to think outside the box, all those people who are highly enlightened and will not scoff at this being a stupid waste of time question, people who are way more intelligent than me :)

It is not a religious question so please don?t even go down that road

?You die and find yourself in a place with 2 gates next to each other, one is a leads place of peace and harmony and the other to a place of torture and pain. At each gate there is a guard, one guard always lies and the other always tells the truth. You do not know which guard is which.
You may only ask one question which must be directed at both guards, only one not one of each guard.
What is the question that you must ask to get the correct answer to get in to the place of peace and harmony??
Miktar and Gldm I especially look forward to your answers as well as the rest of the forums

Adapted from Labyrinth. I could give the answer, but won't spoil it for anyone else.

I've watched Labyrinth, which contains this puzzle. I'm not going to spoiler it for anyone.

Never watched Labyrinth but my answer seems correct I think. I took a whole subject on this stuff at varsity for some reason.

Well look at at mine if you ask the guards what would the other guard say.

Let X = guard that lies
    Let Y = Guard that doesn`t lie
Let A = Path to Pain
Let B = Path to Harmony

If you ask them my question X will say Path A(since he lies), and Y will say Path A since he knows that X will tell him a lie. So both say will say path A then you take the opposite of that outcome and you get to path B

Youre assumption will also have a 50/50 outcome cause you dont know who is lying or telling the truth so saying x lies and y truth is only an assumption.

No. It doesn`t matter whos lying and whos telling the truth cause in the end I only get a lie then by taking the opposite outcome I get the truth

if you take the opposite of the truth then you could get a lie like i said you have no idea if X or Y is the liar therefore by taking the opposite to say "which door would you like to be behind " could get you in to the wrong place ..the liar would say A when he means B and the truth would mean B and mean B.but you have no idea who is who

If you ask both of them at the same time "What would the other guard say in the gate to Harmony and Peace"

The one that lies will know that his friend will tell the truth and he would then say the oppostie of what is true.
The one that doesn`t lie will know that his friend will lie and he will also tell you the opposite of whats true

Then you take the opposite path of what they both said

OK try this get two friends of yours and play out this riddle then ask my question and see what happens

So what youre saying is that both guards will point to the same gate, which is then the gate that leads to pain.

A man looking at a portrait says: Sisters and brothers have I none, But that man's father was my father's son

How is the speaker related to the man in the picture
