You mean aside from the bit about "a law I studied that states piracy/bootlegging is acceptable for 'trials'" being complete fiction? Or the logical fallacy about friends playing your games, when buying a game doesn't actually preclude multiple users? Yeah. I get what Rah_Skill was trying to say, I suppose, but it's not a very good argument at all. There's absolutely no such thing as "trialing" pirated software - at least, there's certainly no legal provision for this. And when you buy a game, you're essentially buying a licence to play it (the ethics of this are, of course, quite debatable). It's not a personal, you-only licence, however. Look at any game EULA, and it usually prohibits only renting or selling (or other monetised versions of this), or reproducing. Allowing someone else to play the game on your PC is not the same thing as copying it for a friend at all. As Rah_Skill points out, though, people are going to do it regardless. But I have no time for entitled apologists like Rambo919. If you're going to pirate stuff, have the guts to admit you're a cheap, greedy asshole. The "I'll pay for it if it's worth it" argument is bullshit - nobody eats at a restaurant, and pays only if they liked the food. If you're going to make gaming your hobby, then shit games are an inherent hazard. Try informing yourself before handing over your cash then. Last edited by Azimuth; 09-02-2010 at 04:12 PM. |

Well it’s technically not a law but is actually present in most user agreements. (In a different form) I can only speak for ROMS but as a blanket rule unless otherwise stipulated you have a 24 hour window period to legally use the software if you do not have the “rights” of an owned copy. In other words if you buy a game you are legally allowed to download and use the ROM (if in the user agreement with publisher), if you don’t own the copy and you download the Rom you can legally enjoy it for 24 hours. It’s a gloriously BS loophole. It has something to do with copyright law concerning libraries. but don't ever think it'll protect you Also depends on whether or not the country you residing in has legislation on the matter. Azimuth, I did see that somewhere. But I don't care. Piracy IS wrong and I am guilty of it yes. I am a douchebag asshole and my other personality beats myself up every night as I cry myself to sleep. But I do play my friend's games and if I like it I buy it. If I don't like the game, yes I'll play it at their place but I won't buy it...
oh and BTW ITT: People thinking this thread has derailed when it hasn't and ironically derailing it anyway. |

So, like, just buy it and crack it. Problem solved. No shitty DRM and you're on the moral high ground.

I’d love to what publishers have to say about people who do this. “But...well..fuck.” |

I've gotten very little support when I've had issues with games I've purchased, particularly on PC.
Gears of War died and died and died until I got the cracked version which ran perfectly. I emailed epic several times with no response. Cracking definitely has it's place, but are cracking and piracy really the same thing? |

I think, and may be wrong, that the primary reason for cracks being developed is piracy. Even if the person's motivation behind the crack development isn't for piracy it will inevitably be used for it. I don't see a problem with cracking a game if you own the original though, the main reason I don't do it is that I want support in the form of DLC and patches or I may want to play online. Truth be told I'm behind any DRM that lets me play without the DVD in the drive. Apart from possible damage to the disk, I don't want to carry around a stack of games I want to play to LANs because chances are high that it'll get stolen. Yes, that is the motivation, but just saying that it does have a place in the grand scheme of things.
