Ahh thanks! That looks quite good.
If I add the 64bit Windows 7 premium edition the total would be about R13000, which is alright. I have questions though: I take it the motherboard supports a 64 bit operating system? I see I still need a dvd drive and a case, any recommendations? But otherwise, wow, this looks like an incredible rig! Last edited by Wight; 02-02-2010 at 11:02 PM. |

Oops. I kinda forgot about case and cd rom. Well I'd recommend dropping to a cooler master 460watt power supply. Cooler master elite 310 case for about R550. And well cheapest cdrom you can find. You could also drop to the Samsung 2333sw to save more cash. Also dropping to 2.1 speakers instead of 5.1. |

Wouldn't it be better to scale up to DDR3 RAM instead? I hear DDR2 is aging fast.

You could change the mobo to am3 and ddr3 Like: OCZ DDR3 1333 R1298 ECS Black series A790GX-AD3 R1002 That does add like another R400 to the price, but its the cheapest board I could find on Prophecy |

Chev gave you the AMD build, here's my recommendation along with a comparative Intel build: AMD: AMD Phenom II x2 550 Black Edition (3.1Ghz, dual-core or possible quad, 6MB L3 cache) @ R1079 MSI 790GX-G65 @ R1266 Apacer DDR3-1333 4GB (2*2GB) @ R1164 Samsung 1TB Eco Green @ R797 (these are fucking nice drives) Club 3D Radeon HD5770 1GB GDDR5 @ R1575 Vantec ioN2+A van-550A, EPS12V , 80PLUS certified @ R695 Samsung P2370 Ultra Slim @ R2294 Logitech X-530 @ R850 Labtec Illuminated Ultra-Flat Keyboard @ R357 (we have one in the shop, its gorgeous) Microsoft Sidewinder X3 @ R408 (what the fuck would you need with an LCD on the mouse anyway?) Liteon 24 Speed DVD Super All-Write @ R256 Windows 7 : Home Premium Edition - Retail @ R1290 Coolermaster RC-310-BWN1 w/ side window @ R346 Total: R12,377 And then, there's not a lot of difference compared to the Intel build, but it is a damn sight faster than most quads on the block. Intel: Intel Core i3 530 @ R1213 Gigabyte H55 Express @ R1149 Apacer DDR3-1333 4GB (2*2GB) @ R1164 Samsung 1TB Eco Green @ R797 (these are fucking nice drives) Club 3D Radeon HD5770 1GB GDDR5 @ R1575 Vantec ioN2+A van-550A, EPS12V , 80PLUS certified @ R695 Samsung P2370 Ultra Slim @ R2294 Logitech X-530 @ R850 Labtec Illuminated Ultra-Flat Keyboard @ R357 (we have one in the shop, its gorgeous) Microsoft Sidewinder X3 @ R408 (what the fuck would you need with an LCD on the mouse anyway?) Liteon 24 Speed DVD Super All-Write @ R256 Windows 7 : Home Premium Edition - Retail @ R1290 Coolermaster RC-310-BWN1 w/ side window @ R346 Total: R12,394 If I were you, I'd pick Intel this time round. Take a look: ![]() ![]() ![]() Intel’s budget fighter: Clarkdale - NAG Online Take the i3 530, clock it to 4Ghz on the stock air cooler, and you're nipping at the heels or besting the Core i7 920 in games. Hi Guys,
I am building a new PC & I am deciding on either a ATI 5850 or 5870 but my question i do not want to overclock & don't know how to plus I don't want to upgrade for a while from my choices should i choose a AMD Phenom II 965 3.4GHZ or a Intel i5 750 (4 x 2.66GHz) |

For longevity, I'd go for an HD5870 and the PhenomII 965. That way you keep the HD5870 when you decide you want to upgrade to something stronger like an AMD six-core CPU. |

I agree with Wesley on the 965. Especially if you get a DDR3 Board. The ECS Black series AM3 boards are amazing value for money. The 5870 is another matter. While it is faster that the 5850 I'm not convinced it's worth the price premium. Especially when the 5850 can be had for under 3grand. My advice would be to only get the 5870 if you're using a resolution of 1920*1200 or higher. |

Hey Chevron
Here's a mouse to add to the system builder's guide. Razer Death Adder http://www.extremetech.com/article2/...2084990,00.asp It's exactly on par with the G5 (See review) but comes in at the price of a MX518 and R250 cheaper than the G5. Your link on the first page 404'd. Prophecy has the G5 for the same price, though. |

Hi. I need some help. I need a new pc for under R9000.
This is the new rig I want to build: Intel Core i5 750 (2.66GHz , LGA1156, 8MB L3 cache) @ 2107 Intel P55WB WhitesBerg @ R1115 Patriot DDR3-1333 4GB (2 * 2GB) @ R1260 Club 3D Radeon HD5770 1GB (GDDR5, 128-bit) @ R1698 Western Digital Caviar Green 500GB (32MB cache) @ R505 Asus TA-D31 @ R335 Cooler Master eXtreme Power PSU 500w @ R601 LG GH22LS40 22x LightScribe Dual Layer DVD Writer @ R290 Windows 7 : Home Premium Edition @ R1250 Total Cost: R9161 My current rig is a Fujitsu Siemens Scaleo J (don't judge). ![]() These are the components as far as I can make out: Specs Intel Pentium 4 Intel Celeron D 341 / 2.93 GHz 512 MB DDR SDRAM PCI Express x16 - NVIDIA GeForce 6200 SE - 64 MB 80gb HD 350w PSU Plus all the USB ports and the network card. Windows XP So what parts could I keep and use in the new pc (eg. USB ports)? How would the old case from the Scaleo J compare to the Asus TA-D31 ? Could I use the old hard drive and run on two hardrives for more space?? Would selling it as a second hand PC and buying new stuff be more cost effective? Which one is more worth it? And also is there any out the box pc for R9000 that will be as effective. I'm looking for preformance and not so much looks. My old pc just isn't grafting because of age, dust or over exposure, I don't know. I live on a farm, not the most PC friendly environments so maybe a 'tough case' or dust trap would help. Please all sugestions welcome. Thanks. Last edited by Bazatt; 17-02-2010 at 02:25 PM. |

Your old pc is very old - nothing is really salvageable at all to be honest but you can sell it for r1200 perhaps. *shrugs* give it a good dusting beforehand. Don't use that case, it has terrible heat management which should be a priority.
When it comes to cleaning dust out, I am quite vigilant with my pc - every couple of months i clean out the fans, and I'm always surprised how much it has collected. Do not keep the 80gb hard drive either - it will be significantly slower than the 500gb (maybe IDE), which would slow everything else down. Just sell the old pc wholesale and put the money into a better case or whatever you need. |

First up, the rig you want to run is a great choice, stick with it. Second, there's nothing of worth that you could use in your new rig from the old one. You could probably use all the internals along with a new HD5450 or similar to build an HTPC in an HTPC or Cube chassis, but that's about it as far as usefulness goes. Well, that, and using it as some sort of media server, I don't know. Selling it for ~ R2000 will be more beneficial in the long run. You could also use the older hard drive as an external one if you buy a case, but you then lose most of the resale value of the rest of the thing. I did that with my laptop when it died, but maybe it won't work out for you. A word of advice: ditch the Asus and get the Cooler Master Elite 310 if you can - I have it, and its a very good budget chassis for it's price. Thirdly, there aren't many pre-built PCs that will stand up to the standards of a custom-built one, so in this respect the only system builder I can recommend to you is Evetech, and even then, their i5 750 system is outlandishly expensive these days. With them, its either a Core i3 system or a much cheaper AthlonII X4 620 build. Intel Core i3 HD 4850 Custom Built Pro Gaming PC |

About the case, I chose the Gigabyte X6 ATX on looks and price over the Asus TA-D31 but does the Coolmaster Elite 310 have any thing else special (cooling?) And should I swap Intel P55WB WhitesBerg the for the MSI P55 CD53? __________________________________________________ Thanks Wesley and jasong for answering the questions and not just telling me to change this and that. ;-) Last edited by Bazatt; 22-02-2010 at 11:07 PM. |

The Cooler Master Elite 310: Cooler Master Elite 310 Review As I said earlier, I have it, and its really a neat chassis, my CPU temps never go above 45°C even on hot days, but that's with 3 120mm fans inside. And personally, I'd go for the MSI board over the stock Intel one any day of the week. They have better performance, and can actually overclock to some degree. Also, the full ATX design of the CD53 allows you more expansion options in the long run, and will run cooler thanks to the more open design. |
