the_novelist

Kent Hudson used to work for LucasArts. We don’t talk about LucasArts any longer so we’ll just leave it at that. He also helped design games like Deus Ex: Invisible War and BioShock 2. He’s got a new project in the works called The Novelist, which follows the day-to-day events of a family of three.

The father, Dan Kaplan, is a novelist working on “the most important book of his career” while on holiday with his son and wife. Dan has to juggle being a husband and father while trying to get his novel done. He’s going to need all sorts of help to get that right, and that’s where you the player comes in.

You’re a ghostly presence in this holiday house. You’ll be able to float around rooms, reading thoughts and watching each member of the family. You’ll be able to influence them but you need to keep out of sight at all times. The game promises loads of choices, with each choice influencing the direction of the story. Multiple playthroughs are also promised. Hit the jump to see the first trailer.

Oh Cube World, we adore you with all your overt blocky cuteness, but why do you disappear for such long periods of time? Sure, you’ve only got two dudes working on you, and for every moment they’re not updating the blog it means that they’re (hopefully) working on finishing you up, but still! We want you now! Not “when it’s done” – NOW!

Wollay has decided to update the Cube World blog for the second time this year! At this rate we might have four updates on the game’s development before the year is out. Earlier he released a massive whack of new screenshots for the procedurally generated action RPG, but now he’s given us a new video loaded with gameplay. There’s quite a bit of new content to see in the clip, including new mechanics like the ability to sail tiny little blocky yachts so that you can traverse the rather gorgeous waters of Cube World.

There’s still no release date for this game, but there are rumours that we might be getting a playable demo sometime soon. When that happens you can expect precisely zero posts on NAG Online, because we’ll be too busy playing the game. New video after the jump.

Remember Mortal Kombat Trilogy all those years ago? It sure was cool, the way they incorporated all the fighters from all the games up to that point into a cohesive whole; a certifiable love letter to the fan community. Wouldn’t it be cooler still if they did that with other game franchises? Like, say, Super Mario Bros.? Thankfully, somebody already has.

Enter Super Mario Bros. Crossover, a browser game that is a remake of the original Super Mario Bros. with loads of assorted new options and playable characters. Would you like to try out the original Super Mario Bros. levels as Samus, Mega Man, Link, Simon Belmont or Bill Rizer from ContraSuper Mario Bros. Crossover mixes all these characters together and more in a prime overload of NES nostalgic goodness. Pity Nintendo didn’t think of it prior to releasing Super Smash Bros.

Head past the break for more info, and a trailer!

game dev tycoon troll

What happens when people who pirate a game development simulator have to deal with people who pirate games in the game? A whole lot of those same people not getting the obvious joke and complaining about it, apparently.

monaco

Monaco, the four-player co-op indie game that’s won a bunch of awards for looking awesome, was supposed to be out on Xbox LIVE Arcade tomorrow 25 April. It’s been delayed less than 24 hours before it was scheduled to release. Now that is what you call a dramatic game delay.

Posting on the game’s official Facebook page, the indie dev broke the news to people well aware of just how last second this delay is: “We just discovered that there is an issue which requires that we push back our Xbox LIVE arcade game release date a little.  We’ve already submitted an update to Microsoft to fix the problem, and as soon as we know that the issue is fixed we’ll have a new release date.  I know our fans have been waiting a long time for the game, and hopefully they’ll have the patience to wait just a little while longer.  What’s mine will be yours very, very soon!”

The good news is that the game hasn’t been delayed on PC. Those of you who have pre-ordered a Steam copy will get the game on time. There’s no revised release date for the XBLA version, but considering a patch has already been submitted to Microsoft, it shouldn’t be too long.

planetary_annihilation

Planetary Annihilation! You will have heard of it if you’re partial to games of the RTS persuasion. I was convinced that we’d written about it before but that doesn’t seem to be the case. For that heinous oversight, I present to you 20 minutes of brand-spanking-new gameplay footage. It’s also gameplay footage that’s narrated and played by developer Uber Entertainment’s Jon Mavor and Steve Thompson.

Things to remember: this is pre-alpha footage; the gameplay is not far off from their target gameplay that was presented in the game’s very successful Kickstarter campaign; you can blow up planets by strapping rockets to nearby asteroids and then sending them on a collision course. Nothing says “respect my authoritah” quite like hurling a space rock at your opponent’s planet.

The footage also takes the time to answer some fan/backer questions. Some of the more notable questions include “can I play this offline” (a question that, a few years ago, would have made most guffaw before saying “of course, silly”, but today… not so much) to which the answer is absolutely. Oh, and the alpha begins in May, so if you’ve pre-ordered then you might get a little invite popped into your inbox. Hit the jump for the footage.

ballpoint_universe_header

And I realise that I’m pretty way behind in all of this considering the game made an appearance as far back as October last year. Be that as it may, this post alerted me to Ballpoint Universe and I figured the indie title was worth sticking into a TILA²GC piece. If you know all about the game already then move along; nothing to see here! If, like me, you’re not right on the indie game pulse seven days a week, then allow me to introduce you to Ballpoint Universe.

It’s a side-scrolling platform adventure, but it’s also a shmup (shoot ‘em up) game! That on its own is great considering shmups are rather rare these days, but what makes this extra cool is that the entire game’s aesthetic has been done on paper with a ballpoint pen. Each character and piece of the landscape has then been scanned in and animated. It looks unbelievably beautiful.

This is just a quick PSA to shriek from the rooftops that Steam is currently running a huge indie game special. From 21 to 29 March there are hundreds of indies going at very low prices. If you’ve missed a couple of titles over the last few months, then there couldn’t be a better time to pick them up. Plus, you know, they’re indie developers so support them! There’s also a category for the recent IGF (Independent Games Festival) finalists and winners.

scurvy_scallywags

Sadly they’re unfamiliar pirates (thanks for nothing, Disney). Ron Gilbert brought us The Secret of Monkey Island. Well, he had help but you know all of this already because you’re old and cantankerous like me. Anyway, Gilbert recently left Tim Schafer’s development house Double Fine; he did so in order to strike out and make something fresh. That something has now been revealed; it’s a match-3 RPG. You know, like Puzzle Quest.

It’s called Scurvy Scallywags in The Voyage to Discover the Ultimate Sea Shanty: A Musical Match-3 Pirate RPG, or just SSITVTDTUSS:AMMTPRPG for short. It’s coming to iPhone and iPad “in a couple of months” but Gilbert and his development partner are busy tinkering with getting the game ported to Android as well.

“I’ve always loved match-3 games,” Gilbert said on his blog, “there is something zen-like about playing them.” In Scurvy Scallywags (I’m not typing the whole thing out), the icons on the board will shift in whichever direction you’ve swiped your finger in order to match three icons. In other words: in other match-3 games like Bejeweled and Puzzle Quest, the icons would cascade downwards on the board, filling in whichever gaps you’d just created by matching three identical icons. This won’t be the case in Scurvy Scallywags, so you’ll need to be careful in which direction you move icons to match your three.

Supergiant Games is the indie team that brought us Bastion. The action-RPG caused a bit of a stir because it was downright incredible. If you haven’t played it yet and you still need to buy a copy, then you’re in luck: The Humble Bundle has just started weekly Humble specials and, wouldn’t you know, Bastion is the first title to be featured. So basically, you can pay $1 for Bastion right now.

But Bastion aside, what’s the new game about? It’s called Transistor and it’s another action-RPG only this time it’s set in a futuristic city and stars a female protagonist. Our leading lady comes across a mysterious and powerful weapon known only as the “Transistor”. She came across the weapon because some crazy people were trying to kill her with it. Now that she has the weapon in her possession, more crazy people are trying to take it away from her.

Supergiant Games is aiming for a 2014 release date, so there’s still quite a wait. They also haven’t settled on platforms as yet. Hit the jump to see the game’s debut trailer. Get a load of that futuristic city; so pretty.
