“It’s Payne!” and his amazing gunplay

Back in November last year, Rockstar released the first episode of a five-part series detailing the technology behind upcoming balletic shooter, Max Payne 3. That was MONTHS ago! Fortunately we’ve got another one right here to help fix that icky feeling stemming from the announcement of a delay to the game’s release date.

In this Design and Technology episode, we get to peak at the “Targeting and Weapons” of the game. As can be expected, there are more muzzle-flashes and whizzing bullets than an average day in Syria.

They’ve really gone into meticulous detail insofar as physics and shifting body weight is concerne; Max even compensates his movement and weight distribution depending on the size of the gun he’s holding. Yeah, obsessive doesn’t even begin to describe Rockstar’s focus on how this game’s going to look and feel. Hit the jump for more shooty shooty bang bang than is probably healthy.

Multiplayer sounds fantastic in Max Payne 3

IGN has put together a piece detailing the multiplayer component of Rockstar’s upcoming Max Payne 3. When one thinks Max Payne they think storyline and, more importantly, Bullet Time. Neither of those are exactly great fits for traditional multiplayer modes. Rockstar knows this, and so they’re developing something fresh and something that fits within the ethos of the Max Payne franchise.

The centre piece for the game’s multiplayer is called Gang Wars. Simply put, Gang Wars is an objective based multiplayer mode for two teams of rival gangs; nothing too different there. What happens in proceeding rounds, however, is where things start to become interesting.

In order to try and weave a narrative into the multiplayer component, the objectives for each team alter depending on the events from the previous round. For example: the entire match might start off as a botched drug deal between the two gangs; you might be tasked with collecting duffle bags of cash or drugs and ferrying them to safe points on your side of the map. While this happens your gang could be winning map territory, or losing it. Either way, the events of this first round dictate the objectives you’ll be given (delivered via a comic book style narrated by Max) for the second.

Mobile GTA III hits next week

This year marks the tenth anniversary of Rockstar’s genre-defining Grand Theft Auto III. This, combined with the science/magicification of today’s mobile platforms, means that you’ll be able to play the game on your cell phone or tablet next week when the Grand Theft Auto III: 10 Year Anniversary Edition hits online stores.

Mobile GTA III is coming to Android and iOS devices for $4.99. That’s mind blowing – seriously. Maybe I’m just getting old or something, but the fact that a game that cost me R300 back in the day and required a monster PC to play smoothly, is now available for R40 on a handheld device makes me giddy. God bless that relentless human ambition to continually advance modern technologly; except for when we inadvertently enslave ourselves to it, then God help us. But until then, we’re totally good.

Devices capable of running the iOS version include: the iPad and iPad 2 as well as the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S. Hit the jump for the list of Android enabled devices.

Max Payne 3 gets a lovely Special Edition

Is that stiflingly depressing Max Payne theme tune playing in head your head yet? No? Get it going then; I’m making it an obligation for every Max Payne post we do between now and March 2012. Need a memory jolt? Go here.

Oh hi! Are we all suitably emo now? Rockstar has announced a good looking Special Edition for next year’s Max Payne 3. Unfortunately the odds of it appearing on our shores are somewhat slim, as at present it’s only available as a pre-order at selected online retailers. Those retailers are the likes of GameStop and Amazon, and from the sounds of the press release, Rockstar has been extra picky in deciding who gets to sell this Want!-inducing version.

So what’s inside? Full details and juicy picture after the jump.

Let’s watch the first Max Payne 3 gameplay video together

We won’t hold hands or anything, just hang out platonically and watch Max perform a ballet of gratuitously violent gunplay.

Also: sweet merciful chipmunks, just look at this game! Talk about shooting straight back up to the top of my “Want!” list. Rockstar Games has put together a five episode series on the technology and game mechanics of upcoming Max Payne 3. The first one, “Crafting a Cutting Edge Action-Shooter”, introduces us to the game in general and gives us a first look at actual gameplay. It is looking amazing.

Each bullet in the game is rendered in real-time, which makes the game’s signature Bullet Time a treat to behold. The first two Max Payne games introduced unbelievable cinematic gameplay for their time, and the third instalment is definitely not skimping on the eye candy. Using the Euphoria physics engine (the same one used by Rockstar for Grand Theft Auto IV and Red Dead Redemption) means that enemies react to everything (bullets, explosions, gravity) in such a realistic way that it borders on the uncanny.

If you haven’t played the original Max Payne games then get to it; they’re both on Steam and they’re both dirt cheap. While the first one looks a little dated, the second can still hold its own. Not that looks should concern you with this franchise, because the gameplay is just top-notch.

Rockstar says some words, mentions GTA V

I’ve spoken to two different friends about the Grand Theft Auto V trailer, and we were all in agreement that none of us had planned to be excited about the game, shrugging it off as more GTA when Rockstar unveiled the logo last week. Then the trailer hit, and we admitted that we all dissolved into quivering puddles of excitement. Holy mother of chocolate milk it looks amazing!

If you haven’t seen it yet, it’s two posts down. Alternatively, if you’re extra lazy, you can just hit this button word here. Since the trailer launched yesterday at 18:00 our time, Rockstar has been keeping quiet, until now.

They have since confirmed that the game is set in the city of Los Santos and its “surrounding hills, countryside and beaches”.  Of course, this was all visible in the trailer. What they have not confirmed is whether this game will have the same scope as San Andreas.

For completion’s sake, here’s the GTA V trailer

The odds of you not having seen this by now are slim, unless you actually have a life outside of gaming and you were doing something last night with, you know, real people. Incidentally, I was sitting poised on Rockstar’s website, watching the last few seconds of the countdown clock tick away so I could hit the play button as soon as possible. You can guess which category I fall into!

So we’re heading back to Los Santos in Grand Theft Auto V. That’s a great thing, right? The trailer doesn’t show us who our playable character is, or if it does, then it doesn’t point him out. Rumour has it this GTA game will allow us to play as multiple characters.

You can get the vibe that Rockstar is aiming for in this fifth instalment. There are a lot of signs of poverty in the trailer which indicates this could be drawing on the recent recession and America’s current economic state. There is a bunch of other cool things to notice like fighter jets, mountain forests and even a dog right at the start. If that’s not just a cutscene, then PETA is going to LOVE this game!

Vice City and San Andreas also possible on iOS

Not so long ago, and in honour of the game’s tenth anniversary, Rockstar announced that Grand Theft Auto III had been ported to iOS and Android devices. There are far more Android devices capable of running the game at present, but Rockstar hasn’t ruled out bringing the game to further mobile platforms in the future. The iPhone 4S and iPad 2 are the only currently listed iOS platforms for GTA III.

Of course, when Rockstar mentions GTA III, it’s a scientifically proven fact that every single gamer on the planet immediately thinks Vice City and San Andreas. This time is no different, because no sooner had Rockstar announced a portable port of GTA III, people started speculating and requesting the same treatment for Vice City and San Andreas.

Good news then that Rockstar has said that it’s entirely possible.

No Red Dead Redemption for you, PC gamers

Over on the Rockstar blog there’s a Q&A session going on. Some interesting stuff has come out of it so far as well as some downright depressing stuff. Depressing like they’ve confirmed that John Marston and his trusty steed will never ride across the dusty plains while being rendered on PC hardware; one of the best games of this current generation is not coming to PC, and that’s a damn shame.

Justifying their decision to deny PC gamers Red Dead Redemption, Rockstar said: “All we can say is that whenever it is viable (technically, developmentally and business-wise) for us to release a game for PC (or any other particular platform) – we will and we usually do; unfortunately, that is just not the case 100% of the time for all platforms.”

Boo! On bright side, Rockstar also said that they hoped “that between the Grand Theft Auto titles, and the forthcoming L.A. Noire and Max Payne 3, you’ll have plenty of great Rockstar action to enjoy.” And then on the brighter bright side, if you’re a PC gamer who is yet to branch into console gaming, you now have a definite must-play title ready for you when you make the jump. And you really should make the jump because you’re missing out on a ton of really great games.

Team Bondi is officially dead

The Sydney based development team behind the commercially successful LA Noire has officially entered liquidation and will soon be a company of the past. This is according to forms submitted to the Australian Securities And Investments Commission.

While LA Noire didn’t dominate in the review scores, it did enjoy success in many countries around the world. However, soon after its release, Team Bondi kept finding itself in the news for all the wrong reasons as staff members accused company head Brendan McNamara of excessive crunch times and no remuneration for overtime hours.

The confrontations got so bad that Team Bondi’s publisher, Rockstar Games, reportedly let the dev team go and will not be publishing any of their future titles – not that that matters any longer. McNamara sold Team Bondi to an Australian film company KMM, after which his employees were told to accept a new job with the new owners or accept severance pay.
