Rockstar says some words, mentions GTA V

I’ve spoken to two different friends about the Grand Theft Auto V trailer, and we were all in agreement that none of us had planned to be excited about the game, shrugging it off as more GTA when Rockstar unveiled the logo last week. Then the trailer hit, and we admitted that we all dissolved into quivering puddles of excitement. Holy mother of chocolate milk it looks amazing!

If you haven’t seen it yet, it’s two posts down. Alternatively, if you’re extra lazy, you can just hit this button word here. Since the trailer launched yesterday at 18:00 our time, Rockstar has been keeping quiet, until now.

They have since confirmed that the game is set in the city of Los Santos and its “surrounding hills, countryside and beaches”.  Of course, this was all visible in the trailer. What they have not confirmed is whether this game will have the same scope as San Andreas.

For completion’s sake, here’s the GTA V trailer

The odds of you not having seen this by now are slim, unless you actually have a life outside of gaming and you were doing something last night with, you know, real people. Incidentally, I was sitting poised on Rockstar’s website, watching the last few seconds of the countdown clock tick away so I could hit the play button as soon as possible. You can guess which category I fall into!

So we’re heading back to Los Santos in Grand Theft Auto V. That’s a great thing, right? The trailer doesn’t show us who our playable character is, or if it does, then it doesn’t point him out. Rumour has it this GTA game will allow us to play as multiple characters.

You can get the vibe that Rockstar is aiming for in this fifth instalment. There are a lot of signs of poverty in the trailer which indicates this could be drawing on the recent recession and America’s current economic state. There is a bunch of other cool things to notice like fighter jets, mountain forests and even a dog right at the start. If that’s not just a cutscene, then PETA is going to LOVE this game!

Vice City and San Andreas also possible on iOS

Not so long ago, and in honour of the game’s tenth anniversary, Rockstar announced that Grand Theft Auto III had been ported to iOS and Android devices. There are far more Android devices capable of running the game at present, but Rockstar hasn’t ruled out bringing the game to further mobile platforms in the future. The iPhone 4S and iPad 2 are the only currently listed iOS platforms for GTA III.

Of course, when Rockstar mentions GTA III, it’s a scientifically proven fact that every single gamer on the planet immediately thinks Vice City and San Andreas. This time is no different, because no sooner had Rockstar announced a portable port of GTA III, people started speculating and requesting the same treatment for Vice City and San Andreas.

Good news then that Rockstar has said that it’s entirely possible.

No Red Dead Redemption for you, PC gamers

Over on the Rockstar blog there’s a Q&A session going on. Some interesting stuff has come out of it so far as well as some downright depressing stuff. Depressing like they’ve confirmed that John Marston and his trusty steed will never ride across the dusty plains while being rendered on PC hardware; one of the best games of this current generation is not coming to PC, and that’s a damn shame.

Justifying their decision to deny PC gamers Red Dead Redemption, Rockstar said: “All we can say is that whenever it is viable (technically, developmentally and business-wise) for us to release a game for PC (or any other particular platform) – we will and we usually do; unfortunately, that is just not the case 100% of the time for all platforms.”

Boo! On bright side, Rockstar also said that they hoped “that between the Grand Theft Auto titles, and the forthcoming L.A. Noire and Max Payne 3, you’ll have plenty of great Rockstar action to enjoy.” And then on the brighter bright side, if you’re a PC gamer who is yet to branch into console gaming, you now have a definite must-play title ready for you when you make the jump. And you really should make the jump because you’re missing out on a ton of really great games.

Team Bondi is officially dead

The Sydney based development team behind the commercially successful LA Noire has officially entered liquidation and will soon be a company of the past. This is according to forms submitted to the Australian Securities And Investments Commission.

While LA Noire didn’t dominate in the review scores, it did enjoy success in many countries around the world. However, soon after its release, Team Bondi kept finding itself in the news for all the wrong reasons as staff members accused company head Brendan McNamara of excessive crunch times and no remuneration for overtime hours.

The confrontations got so bad that Team Bondi’s publisher, Rockstar Games, reportedly let the dev team go and will not be publishing any of their future titles – not that that matters any longer. McNamara sold Team Bondi to an Australian film company KMM, after which his employees were told to accept a new job with the new owners or accept severance pay.

GTA fuelled another real life massacre

Man, this is getting old. I’m just going to start writing a billion of these “GTA made me do it” articles to keep on hand. I’ll write about GTA style rampages in different settings involving different people (ex-cops, school kids etc) and then, when they actually happen in real life, I’ll have the news article ready to go. It’ll be like journalism’s answer to Minority Report.

In this latest real-life GTA rampage, twenty-three year old Ryan Donovan used a SA80 assault rifle against his fellow officers onboard a (wait for it) submarine. He shot and killed Lieutenant Commander Ian Molyneux at point-blank range. He also shot and wounded another Lieutenant Commander. He was eventually tackled and subdued by two members of a group that was being given a tour of the docked submarine.

Donovan had reportedly been drinking heavily the night before his shooting spree. He had told friends that he was about to commit a “Grand Theft Auto style massacre” prior to his violent actions.

Max Payne 3 gets its very first trailer

Here’s the very first official Max Payne 3 trailer for 2012’s Bullet-Time ladened action game from Rockstar. This is the first time we get to see our balding, titular character in motion and it’s clear that – alright you know what, I don’t even know why I’m writing all of this rubbish; it’s Max Payne 3 for crying out loud. Just watch it already! We’ve only been waiting for like what, over eighteen months to see this game? Do it! Do it now, before Max splatters your brains all over a wall in sloooooooow-motiooooooon.

For those of you who haven’t played the first two Max Payne games, it’s worth checking them out before March 2012. This series has always been pretty heavy on story steeped in noir themes. While Max is in by far a more sunny location (Brazil!), you can be sure the plot will get jaded as hell at some point, so you might need some background as to why Max such an emo bastard. Both games are on Steam (you can buy both in a bundle for $14.99) and while the first one looks dated by now, the action sure as hell is not.

And now you’re going to have the Max Payne theme tune in your head all day.

Max Payne 3 dated, box-arted and multiplayer-ed

Hooray! We finally have a slightly more concrete release date for Rockstar Games’ Max Payne 3. Get ready to dive around in slow-motion, dodging bullets and head-shotting  Brazilian gangsters in March 2012.

Rockstar made this announcement today via their official website. Included with the date was confirmation that the game will feature a multiplayer mode – a first for the series. Multiplayer will pit players against each other on maps that “dynamically alter” as the game progresses. There will be a levelling system and unlock tiers included as well.

Fans of the original will naturally be more inclined to dive into the single-player portion of the game, which Rockstar has promised will be “expansive”. In Max Payne 3, Max has become a private security operative protecting a rich Brazilian family in Sao Paulo. After a gang threatens the life of the family, it’s up to Max to clear his name and fight for his life and that of his clients. Bullet-Time will obviously be making a return, but we knew that already. For an additional screenshot and what will hopefully be the box art, hit the jump.

London riots blamed on… you guessed it!

In case you were unaware, London (that place where about 90% of South Africans go to live before realising that their home country is actually pretty awesome) is experiencing some civil unrest. On the 6th and 7th of August, mobs of people began rioting and looting in various suburbs of London following the fatal shooting of a 29-year-old civilian by the Metropolitan Police Services.

Now, because the non-gaming media seem to be incapable of resisting things like this, newspapers in London are blaming the riots and violence on Grand Theft Auto. I know right, who’d have guessed?

According to a front page banner headline in the London Evening Standard, “children as young as ten, inspired by videogame, among the looters”. The article then elaborates and says: “Children aged between 10 and 14, said to have been inspired by video game Grand Theft Auto, were seen rampaging through Enfield and Brixton as riots and looting also spread to Dalston and Fulham.” Who exactly said that, however, is never referenced, but MCV claims that the link was made by a police officer.

GTA: San Andreas, meet the RAGE engine

A group of massive GTA: San Andreas fans have taken it upon themselves to drag the old girl kicking and screaming onto the RAGE engine, which is the engine that GTA IV is built on. They’ve recreated the entire San Andreas map and have been busy doing so since last year.

A public beta will start in August, which will allow you to rampage around San Andreas on your PC. Note, however, that this is just a map and no mention of recreating any of the missions from the original game has been made. Here’s a twenty minute video showing you what the team has managed to put together so far; impressive stuff.
