gta_v_amazon_pc_listing

This was bound to happen at some point considering the Grand Theft Auto games have invariably been released on PC. A couple of German online retailers have put PC versions of upcoming GTA V up for pre-order. While the console versions are landing on 17 September, there are no expected dates for the PC version.

On top of a PC version, one German retailer put a special edition up on their website; the listing has since been removed. Still, the contents of the special edition included things like a map of the game world, SteelBook case, in-game challenges, bonus outfits, bonus tattoos, exclusive weapons, special abilities boosters and something called “online store concession”. That last one hints at some sort of GTA V store; possibly for in-game microtransactions?

IGN contacted Rockstar regarding these listings, but the representative refused to comment. It’s worth noting that the one retailer (hopefully) jumping the gun is the German arm of Amazon. It would be unusual for a company like Amazon to post bogus listings. For now take this as rumour, but it’s certainly a lot better than Rockstar’s previous stance on a PC version.

Don’t public holidays have a great way of throwing our country into some weird state of limbo? Take these new GTA V trailers for example: they came out two days ago but do you think any of us writers managed to tear ourselves away from whatever it was we were doing during the mid-week Saturday? Damn right we didn’t manage to, and so we present to the four of you who haven’t already seen these, the brand new triple-bundle-mega-awesome-super-pack of GTA V trailers.

Each trailer focuses on one of the three playable protagonists found in the game: there’s Michael the wealthy but unfulfilled middle-aged white guy desperate for something new; Franklin the headstrong token black guy fighting his way out of whatever it is he doesn’t want to be in any longer (the ghetto or something); and then there’s Trevor who, well, just seems a little shifty to me, but I can’t see that stopping him from becoming my favourite out of the morally upstanding trio.

Hit the jump for the trailers; they’re all crammed into one video window because you get to choose which one to watch first. Think of it as YouTube for the 21st century. Science!

Not only iTunes, but Spotify as well if you’re into that whole approach to music. I’d be lying if I said that one of my favourite parts about getting a new GTA game is knowing that there’ll be a ton of great music, as well as hilarious adverts and fake news segments, delivered via the various radio stations. Everyone has a favourite station in the various GTA games, so much so that instinctively switching stations the moment you hop into a newly stolen car, becomes a matter of routine – especially if there happened to be a good song playing while you wrote-off the car prior to the new one you just hijacked.

Tracks from the radio stations in GTA IV, Episodes from Liberty City, San Andreas, Vice City and GTA III are now available – yes, even on the South African iTunes store. Prices per album radio station vary, as do some of the individual pricing options: some tracks are up for R6.99 and others for R8.99 a pop.

Rockstar has noted that not all tracks are available as some of the songs featured in the various games are not on iTunes or Spotify as yet. Furthermore, these are just the songs; you won’t hear any radio DJ banter or fake adverts in between. If you want that stuff, then there’s a repository for it over here. You can find individual links to the separate radio stations on iTunes or Spotify in the source link below.

Box art! It’s become a thing that people get invested in quite a bit. Sometimes box art rolls around that people love; other times it’s box art that everyone hates! Sometimes the hate is strong enough to make the developers/publishers include a reversible cover to satiate the fans. There is one enduring series that hasn’t changed its box art formula for years. It hasn’t changed in years because it’s become as synonymous with the series as the series has become synonymous with gaming. Yep, GTA‘s box art is inevitably always well received. It’s classy, it’s consistent and the newest iteration of the winning formula for GTA V is right after this shiny little jump button you see below.

SCUBA diving! Motorbikes! Parachuting! Miniguns! These are just a few of the family-friendly things on show in this latest batch of super-fresh screenshots for upcoming GTA V. The collection shows off some of the game’s more wild areas (wild as in nature and stuff) and gives us a glimpse of a thunderstorm with suitably moody ocean in the foreground.

It all looks very pretty, but let’s just be honest here: the chances of these being doctored are really high. They look incredible, but they’re also screenshots of a game that’s running on eight year old tech. It all makes me wonder why Rockstar hasn’t just announced the game for next-gen platforms, or PC for that matter. Perhaps GTA V will appear on next-gen consoles, but Rockstar is just waiting for Microsoft to get around to announcing their new console first? Who knows?

Hit the jump for the gallery. Do bullshots bug you? Should developers/publishers show us the real deal, or have doctored screenshots become synonymous with game marketing to such an extent that we now expect pre-release screens to be modified?

Do you know who doesn’t have enough money? Notch and the rest of the Minecraft gang over at Mojang. Luckily for them they’ve hatched this harebrained scheme in which they plan on charging people a monthly subscription for their own private server space. It’s called Minecraft Realms and it’s a response to a request by concerned parents that Mojang receives far too often: is there a way for kids to play Minecraft in a secure online environment?

Obviously the answer was “no” at first, but thanks to the power of capitalism (and the goodness of Mojang’s heart, of course) that “no” has been turned into a resounding “soon”!

The gist is this: for a monthly subscription fee, people can gain access to their own, private online Minecraft realm. They’ll be able to adjust all sorts of parameters themselves and be able to invite their friends via the built-in friends list feature. It’ll be safe, closed off and a perfect way for parents to allow their innocent children to muck about in an online game of Minecraft without the risk of needing to call Chris Hansen.

Here’s some bittersweet news for everyone: Grand Theft Auto V will be out on 17 September 2013. Rejoice! An actual release date! Now, for those of you have been paying attention, you’ll notice that this is about four months later than initially expected.

When Rockstar finally lifted the lid on the next instalment in one of gaming’s most recognisable series, it was originally pegged to be out in “Spring 2013”. That’s American for some time between March and May for us here in South Africa. Looks like we’ll be waiting a little longer than that.

This news came via an official statement from the team working on the game. The announcement was published on the Rockstar homepage and because gamers are a whiny, self-entitled bunch, the delay has resulted in a torrent of abusive comments. It’s gotten bad enough for Rockstar to have to pin a warning to the top of the comments block. Hit the jump for the full announcement.

Disney Interactive has lifted the lid on Disney Infinity during a press conference in Hollywood. For months now, rumours and speculation have swirled around the game that was initially codenamed “Toy Box”. Pretty much all of that rumour and speculation has now been confirmed.

Disney Infinity will allow players to collect plastic figurines of Disney characters, and then import those characters into the Disney Infinity game via an Infinity Base. In addition to character figurines, players will also be able to collect Power Discs that will grant their characters special powers in the game. Furthermore, there will be collectible pieces that will bring greater customization options to the game. The launch line-up will include 17 Disney character figurines, 40 customization pieces and 20 Power Discs.

Disney Infinity will be built around multiple worlds from within the Disney IP stables; these worlds are called Play Sets. In June, Disney Infinity will launch with three Play Sets each based on the films of Pirates of the Caribbean, Monsters inc. and The Incredibles.  Trailer after the jump.

A petition has appeared online requesting Rockstar to bring GTA V to PC. Last week it was revealed that a PC version (along with a Wii U version) was “up for consideration”, implying that Rockstar had not intended to bring the game to the platform. That, understandably, hasn’t sat right with PC gamers and that’s why there’s this online petition. Will it help? Who knows, but if you feel hard done-by then you may as well sign it – over 86, 000 people already have.

GTA V is the title that’s currently got the gaming world in a tizz. There are still many, many unanswered questions, such as whether or not the game will arrive on any other platforms beside the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

IGN recently wrangled Rockstar VP of creativity Dan Houser, and got him to answer some of the more pressing questions. When asked why the game was only confirmed for PS3 and Xbox 360, and why not PC or Wii U, Houser’s response can be seen as a little disconcerting for the PC crowd: “Everything else is up for consideration. That’s all I can give you.”

The previous entry in the series, GTA IV, arrived on PC after more than a seven month delay and considerable porting issues. After that, Rockstar’s other big title, Red Dead Redemption, skipped the PC altogether.
