Here’s a spot of good news for us beleaguered Wii U fans: Ubisoft has revealed that they’re working on a prototype for a sequel to ZombiU. The survival horror title was a launch game for Nintendo’s new console, and it was largely well received by both critics and players. The title was also responsible for generating much of the initial hype around the Wii U and was integral in Nintendo’s marketing towards the core gamer demographic.

Responding to a fan question over Twitter, Ubisoft Montpellier’s Jean-Philippe Caro wrote: “Thank you for your interest in ZombiU. The team is working hard on a prototype. It’s too soon to tell you more.” Shortly after that information was divulged, Ubisoft confirmed that the team was indeed working on content, but that no official sequel had been green-lit by the publisher. From the sounds of things it’s still early days.

Ubisoft, unlike many other publishers and developers, isn’t afraid to develop for the Wii U. However, with the once Wii U exclusive Rayman Legends going multi-platform, it’ll be interesting to see whether Ubisoft makes a formal ZombiU sequel, or whether they go the spiritual successor route so that they can drop the “U” moniker and go multi-platform.

A while back, we posted a story about a new indie team called Red Barrels. That’s right, the group that’s made up of developers who have worked on games like Uncharted and Assassin’s Creed. They’re making a new survival horror called Outlast and it looks suitably terrifying.

In honour of Halloween, the team has released an extended version of the debut trailer we posted earlier. It fleshes out the basic premise of the game and gives you a good idea of just how they’re planning on ramping up the horror levels. They’ve got some clever ideas, such as no flashlights, which forces you to use the night vision mode on your character’s video camera instead.

Outlast remains a PC exclusive heading to Steam; no word on a release date so far.

Okay, sorry, here’s another late one from me. I’ll try to be less tardy in the future – pinky-swear. Anyway, this time, we’re looking at Resident Evil 6, and opinions are quite mixed on this one. I’ll give you my own take on the situation, but I’ll try to provide the raw facts too, so you can make up your own mind.

There’s a new indie development team in town, and it’s called Red Barrels. The Montreal based team is primarily made of developers from Ubisoft, but many of them did stints working with other developers such as Naughty Dog. Insofar as the members’ résumés are concerned, collectively they’ve bought us games like Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, Assassin’s Creed, Splinter Cell: Conviction, Army of Two and Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune. Those are some really great games, which means you’re allowed to be excited about this whole Red Barrels thing.

They’re making a game for PC. What’s that? Just PC? At the moment, that seems to be the case. They’re making a game called Outlast and it’s coming to Steam. The game is a survival horror set in an abandoned asylum in Colorado. Mount Massive Asylum has apparently been re-opened and used as a research institute by a company called Murkoff Corporation. You play a journalist called Miles Upshur, who breaks into the facility to find out what’s going on.

All of that pretty much ticks the correct boxes for a creepy as hell survival horror. There’s a reveal trailer after the jump; it’s looking pretty good, and totally unsettling. That’s a resounding “yes please” then.

ZombiU is a big deal for both Ubisoft and Nintendo. It’s a big deal for the French publisher because they have the potential to launch another successful franchise – a feat that they’ve had a good string of luck with of late. For Nintendo, it’s the poster-child for their return to the so-called “core gaming” masses. When Nintendo talks about catering to both casual and core, it’s the likes of Black Ops II, Batman: Arkham City: Armoured Edition and Assassin’s Creed III that are used to satiate the latter. ZombiU does this as well, but it has a distinct advantage: it’s a Wii U exclusive.

At rAge 2012, we got the chance to go hands-on with the game as well as interview ZombiU’s associate producer, Nicolas Robin, and senior game designer, Mounir Radi.

Earlier this week it was revealed that there was on-disc “DLC” for Resident Evil 6. This sparked a fair amount of controversy considering  Capcom is no stranger to this move. It turns out, however, that the supposed on-disc DLC was always intended to be free content that unlocked via a title update. Capcom has announced that the “No Hope” difficulty level and co-op option for Ada Wong’s campaign (the two revealed items of supposed on-disc DLC) will be added soon.

Oh boy, remember how Capcom included on-disc “DLC” in Resident Evil 5 and people weren’t so happy? And then remember when they included on-disc “DLC” and hidden PS3 exclusive characters in the Xbox 360 version of Street Fighter x Tekken? Yeah, people weren’t too happy about that either? And THEN remember how on-disc “DLC” appeared in Dragon’s Dogma? Capcom, it seems, is one of those companies that refuses to learn from customer feedback.

There’s on-disc “DLC” in Resident Evil 6. It was apparently discovered by a YouTube user called “FluffyQuack” who managed to dig up the locked-off content via a mod for the game. There are loads of videos on his YouTube channel but apparently there are a few spoilers as well, so tread carefully if you don’t want this pinnacle of the survival horror genre ruined for you.

Capcom, sensing the inevitable player/fan/world backlash that their on-disc “DLC” is about to cause, has released a statement to Eurogamer.

Last week Friday, somebody in Poland posted pictures of a retail copy of Resident Evil 6 – a game that’s only supposed to come out on 02 October. Evidently a shop in Poland decided to give street date the finger and put a couple of copies of the game up for sale. Those copies were purchased and now a bunch of people in Poland are playing Resident Evil 6 a whole month before the game is actually due out.

When the story first cropped up, many were understandably sceptical. There have been dozens of instances where people have photoshopped or made their own game packaging and then posted pictures on the Internet with captions like “LOLZ! I can haz gaemz bfor release LOL!” The images of the supposed retail version of Resident Evil 6, however, looked kind of legit.

Capcom has since confirmed that they are the real deal and that they’re also stolen property.

It’s pretty hard to scare gamers these days, but that doesn’t stop indie developers Parsec Productions from making a valiant effort. Their game Slender, based on the Slender Man mythology-meme, is an experimental first-person survival-horror affair. Alone in the woods at the dead of night, you are armed only with a flashlight and have to search the locale for eight pages which divulge more cryptic information on the malevolent, slender entity.

Unfortunately, the Slender Man  himself – with his lanky arms and dead, white, faceless head – is not far behind you and will randomly appear in and out of the trees to wreck your sanity. Staring at him causes your consciousness to quickly fade, so it’s always prudent to run when he appears. Your flashlight’s power is not unlimited and the chase’s ante is upped as more pages are collected. Think of it as a mix of the setting of The Blair Witch Project and the fade-to-static horror of The Ring.

It sounds so good on paper: side-scrolling platformer / survival-horror set in a zombie apocalypse during the the 1980s, following the exploits of a nearly-gone-insane park ranger as he tries to piece together his memories and survive the “shadows”. Limited ammo, limited stamina, infinite danger. All the constituent parts check out. So how did Deadlight manage to get it all so wrong?
