This is the fourth time this rumour has surfaced, but website The Verge isn’t even labelling it as such this time. They’ve learnt from Microsoft sources that the company will soon do away with the loathed MS Points system in favour of cash vouchers similar to what Apple has on offer for iTunes. Apparently you’ll also be able to purchase directly with a credit card or debit card instead of going the voucher route. These MS Vouchers will work across all of Microsoft’s online stores, from Xbox LIVE to the Windows Store.

I cannot speak for the whole gaming community in the entire world, but I think it’s safe to say that we all had pretty much the same reasons and intentions for getting into gaming. We enjoy taking on the roles of different characters and experiencing their lives through their eyes, whether they be assassins, soldiers, strategists or Batman. However, after reading Major Nelson’s top 20 games for Xbox LIVE (as well as Arcade and Indie) and Games for Windows LIVE, I had to double check to make sure that I was in fact reading correctly. This is because when it comes to three out of the four categories, mining games are making their presence very much known. The only category that hasn’t succumbed to the force of manual labour is that of Games for Windows LIVE.

Earlier this week, speculation arose about whether or not Microsoft was planning to drop MS Points from Xbox LIVE. This came off the back of the software giant’s decision to default to credit cards and local currency whenever somebody tries to purchase digital content through upcoming Windows 8. This decision did not rule out MS Points as an additional payment method on Windows 8, but it did get people thinking that the Xbox 360 shopfronts might follow suit.

A Microsoft spokesperson has since taken this speculation out back and put a bullet in its head. Don’t feel bad though, there’s a beautiful place on the Internet where all dead speculation goes to frolic in wide open spaces. There’s lots of fresh air and butterflies.

According to the spokesperson, “Microsoft Points continue to be the currency for purchasing content for the Xbox 360 console.” See? It was a swift termination; speculation probably didn’t even feel a thing. In related news, online retailers (who make a living selling MS Points to gamers) have breathed a collective sigh of relief.

Website The Verge has done an extensive hands-on with Windows 8. Apparently, using the Windows 8 shop front for music purchases and movie rentals no longer defaults to MS Points for payment purposes; instead, users are prompted to use credit cards to pay the exact amount. According to The Verge, it’s likely that Microsoft will remove MS Points from Xbox LIVE in the upcoming dashboard update. You’ll still be able to buy and use MS Points, but in Windows 8 that will no longer be the only option. Here’s hoping this does indeed spread to the Xbox 360.

Xbox LIVE has a loyalty program called Xbox LIVE Rewards; if you do certain things then you’re rewarded with MS Points to spend on games. The official Xbox LIVE Rewards Twitter account just announced that, come our spring time, you’ll be earning Rewards based on your Xbox 360 Achievements. No further details were mentioned but we’re sure they’re not far off. If you have a UK or USA Xbox LIVE account, you can sign up for the Rewards program. ‘Chievo-whores, ASSEMBLE!

Microsoft’s senior vice president for their Interactive Entertainment Division, Yusuf Mehdi, has revealed that the average household spends more time using Xbox LIVE for online media than for online gaming. How much more? More than 50% more actually.

According to Mehdi: “What we’re seeing is that people are turning on the Xbox to play games and then keeping it on afterwards to get other types of entertainment.” The other types of entertainment refers to the various media apps available over Xbox LIVE, like Netflix, YouTube and Hulu. While many of these online apps are not available in South Africa, it’s nevertheless rather interesting to hear that Xbox LIVE is now more about online media than it is about online gaming.

With this in mind, the recent rumours of a supposed “Xbox Lite” media unit make a hell of a lot of sense. You can read more about that rumour here. With households now spending an average of 84 hours on Xbox LIVE per month, it seems like a good time for Microsoft to release an Apple TV equivalent after all.

Male gamer privilege: Every game exists to stroke your ego. Female gamer privilege: Ten-year olds call you a slut when you play games online.” – Somebody retweeted by somebody else in my Twitter stream

For those of you not acquainted with the concept of privilege, it’s the phenomenon of conferring sociocultural advantage to some group, usually as a consequence of bias, discrimination, or – perhaps most insidiously – because that’s just the way things are, starring “gender roles” and 1950 and It Came From Patriarchy.

In case you’ve been living under a rock for a few months, Xbox Live accounts are being hacked and saved credit card details are being used by sneaky thieves to purchase MS Points. Our own Geoff Burrows experienced exactly this with his Xbox Live account, but was fortunate enough to have his bank fix everything back up regarding his credit card.

A theory has recently cropped up online that might explain how people are losing control of their accounts, and it all has to do with Xbox.com and not actual Xbox Live. Most people on Xbox Live are aware that an Xbox Live account and Windows Live ID are one in the same thing. Microsoft’s Xbox.com website apparently makes it rather easy for hackers to use a script to execute a brute-force hack that bypasses the minimum password attempts before CAPTCHA security kicks in. CAPTCHA is the system that prompts you to enter a randomly generated letter and number phrase, but they’re extra tricky to read and sometimes you have to hit refresh about a billion times before you get one that is actually legible… or is that just me?

In South Korea, gaming is a big deal. Online gaming is even more of a big deal. Just look at how ridiculously popular StarCraft is over there – they even televise live StarCraft matches and have multiple national teams and leagues for the game. So yes, online competitive gaming is a massive deal in South Korea.

What could begin to be argued as the country’s national pastime is causing its government major concern. This resulted in the South Korean government imposing an online gaming ban between midnight and 6AM for those under the age of sixteen. This was originally for PC gaming only, but that’s about to change as the South Korean government applies the same laws to consoles.

This has left Sony and Microsoft scrambling to find a solution for their PlayStation Network and Xbox Live services. Sony appears to have gotten their online ducks in a row, but Microsoft is having a bit of an issue. As for Nintendo, nobody’s heard from them at all.

There’s a new version of Microsoft Windows heading our way in the not too distant future. Mr. Xbox Live himself, Major Nelson, has revealed via his blog that Microsoft is integrating the Xbox Live service into Windows 8. Achievement Whoring for your Xbox 360 Gamertag  is about to become easier on PC.

This was rumoured some months ago, and confirmed at Microsoft’s Build developer’s conference yesterday (reported by Major Nelson). What this means is that Games For Windows Live is likely to be a thing of the past, as Microsoft has been demoing Windows 8 Xbox Live development tools to game developers during this Build conference.

The look of Windows 8 Xbox Live is very similar to the upcoming Xbox 360 Dashboard update, which makes the two systems match up nicely and seem more connected. Basically, whatever you can do on Xbox Live (Netflix, Friends Lists etc) you’ll be able to do on your Windows 8 PC. No mention of whether or not Xbox 360 games will be making the jump though.
