According to the Japan Video Software Association, sales of anime, including DVDs, Blu-ray Discs, UMDs and video cassettes amounted to 127.731 billion yen as of the first half of 2009. This is almost a 10% drop in total sales compared to the same period last year. DVDs are still the strongest seller, but Blu-ray sales are slowly but surely climbing since the HD-DVD/Blu-ray format contest had been won, and total Blu-ray sales in Japan have been dominated by anime at 56%, which is quite a jump from only 20% of Blu-ray sales being comprised of anime last year. However, Blu-ray sales in general still represent only 6.6% of the total video software market in Japan, so there’s plenty of room for improvement.

10% less of these were sold this year than last. Recession perhaps?
