It seems that 70-year-old manga artist, Keiji Nakazawa, has been forced to stop work on his current manga project, Barefoot Gen, due a cataract in his right eye and a damaged retina in his left eye. He underwent surgery for this recently, but reportedly can no longer see fine lines – a serious impediment for a comic book artist. There are currently two chapters of Barefoot Gen available, semi-autobiographical works about the difficulties experienced by Nakazawa as a Hiroshima bombing victim who lost most of his family members either during the bombing or in the aftermath. Apparently he will continue his public efforts to oppose nuclear proliferation even if he can no longer draw comics on the subject.
