While many believe that having a monopoly on something is great for (their) business, Gearbox Software CEO Randy Pitchford seems to think differently. In a recent interview with Maximum PC, he was quoted as saying, “Steam helps us as customers, but it’s also a money grab, and Valve is exploiting a lot of people in a way that’s not totally fair,” he continued. “Valve is taking a larger share than it should for the service it’s providing. It’s exploiting a lot of small guys. For us big guys, we’re going to sell the units and it will be fine.”
Later, in a post on Slashdot to clarify some of the speculation, he mentioned that what he said might have been taken out of context, and that he was speaking from the perspective of other players in the industry – but that he stills thinks that it’s dangerous for Valve to have no real competition as far as digital distribution goes.
